Dr. Richard Meserve serving pro nuclear interests in USA’s radiation cancer research?

1 May 2010, Beyond Nuclear has requested that the National Academies of Science (NAS) conduct a review for conflict of interest on Dr. Richard Meserve who currently chairs the NAS Nuclear and Radiation Study Board. This is the board tasked to shape and supervise the new cancer study around US nuclear power facilities.

Beyond Nuclear notes that Dr. Meserve also currently serves as Senior to Counsel of DC law firm catering to nuclear industry interests, on the Boards of Directors for two nuclear power companies headquartered in Texas and California, as a member of the Board of Advisors to the French-US nuclear conglomerate looking to construct new reactors in the United States and also recently contributed to a Congressional lobbying effort by the nuclear industry which used a special advertising supplement in the Washington Post asking for increased federal loans for new reactor construction.

Big uranium mining company involved in corruption

BHP Reveals Possible Corruption, – Australasian Investment Review – (AIR) 22 April 2010, BHP Billiton, the world’s biggest mining company, has joined its smaller rival, Rio Tinto, in being implicated in possible corrupt activities.The news was buried in the company’s first quarter exploration and development report, issued yesterday……
The ASX and or ASIC should ask BHP to provide more details as soon as possible……The disclosure laws here in Australia will have to be applied to see if BHP has provided timely and adequate disclosure to the local (and London) markets……There’s no word on whether the US Justice Department will become involved, but if it involves a breach of America’s bribery laws, it will.

If the reports are confirmed then authorities in countries in Europe, especially the European Commission and China could also become involved…..the fact that the allegations have been raised by the SEC shows the lax controls inside BHP, Australasian Investment Review

Nuclear Summit kept quiet about dangers of recycling nuclear fuel

Recycling fuel should end: Evans, Sydney Morning Herald, April 15, 2010, WASHINGTON: A former Australian foreign minister, Gareth Evans, was at the centre of a dispute over reactor suppliers recycling nuclear fuel even as US officials sought to skirt the issue during a summit in Washington organised by the President, Barack Obama.

Mr Evans is co-chairman of the Australian government’s international non-proliferation and disarmament commission. On Monday, at a conference of experts which is being held in parallel with Mr Obama’s nuclear security summit, he called for an end to fuel recycling.Mr Evans and a former US ambassador-at-large, Robert Gallucci, said recycling created stockpiles of dangerous materials ripe for theft………
The issue was not among those central to the Obama summit. Administration officials said last week they had deliberately avoided some of the more contentious issues that would not have won support from all participants. Gareth Evans
