Delays, cost, opposition, to UK’s nuclear waste plans

Budget cuts caution on UK nuclear waste plan,  BBC News, 7 July 2010 The UK’s deep store for nuclear waste should open for business around 2040 – but spending cuts could delay the plans, and community support is vital. These are the key messages in a report from the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), the agency charged with managing the nation’s waste………….

The UK’s nuclear waste problem is considerably bigger than either of the Scandinavian countries……….

The total volume of waste from past and present operations amounts to about 500,000 cubic metres, although there is a huge variety in types of waste, the level of radioactivity and how long it will remain dangerously radioactive.

The coalition government has said it is committed to finding a long-term solution for the UK’s nuclear waste problem………..If no communities want the repository, said Alun Ellis, it will not be built.

“The government’s answer to this question is that Plan B is to make Plan A work,”

Airport scanning radiation risk much worse than previously thought

(UK) Airport body scanners deliver radiation dose 20 times higher than first thought, warns expert  Daily Mail  30th June 2010 Full body scanners at airports could increase your risk of skin cancer, experts warn…. scientists say radiation from the scanners has been underestimated and could be particularly risky for children. They say that the low level beam does deliver a small dose of radiation to the body but because the beam concentrates on the skin – one of the most radiation-sensitive organs of the human body – that dose may be up to 20 times higher than first estimated…..
The most likely risk from the airport scanners is a common type of skin cancer called basal cell carcinoma, …..Dr David Brenner, head of Columbia University’s centre for radiological research said: ‘There really is no other technology around where we’re planning  to X-ray such an enormous number of individuals. It’s really unprecedented in  the radiation world.’ Airport body scanners deliver radiation dose 20 times higher than first thought | Mail Online

Taxpayer would cop major cost of UK nuclear wastes

The real costs of nuclear power ,The Guardian, Darren Johnson , 17 June 2010, Paul Spence says the nuclear industry expects to pay the full cost of decommissioning a new generation of nuclear power stations (Response, 15 June). But his words about “our full share of waste management and disposal costs” were carefully chosen. The consultation document reveals that EDF considers their full share of these costs to be around 20% of the total. As our report Nuclear Power? No Point! highlighted last year, nuclear is only responsible for 4% of the energy consumed in the UK. More energy can be saved by energy conservation measures in homes and businesses. Focusing on the nuclear industry takes resources away from building new renewable capacity, which, given sufficient political will, could provide more than enough electricity for the UK.
