Wind, dust, carry depleted uranium far and wide

Dust-StormAustralia ‘uranium’ dust concerns
muzzylogic Oct 3, 2009 ‘Environmentalists have raised concerns that another giant dust storm blowing its way across eastern Australia may contain radioactive particles.

It is argued that sediment whipped up from Australia’s centre may be laced with material from a uranium mine.

Scientists have played down concerns, saying there is little to worry about.’ Full story here

Well, now this is interesting. The argument against the spread is the fact that uranium ore dust is going to be too dense to be carried by the wind. However, if that turns out not to be the case then it will have serious implications for the clap trap nonsense the US military likes to spout as regard the use of depleted uranium munitions.

Clap trap because whether or not the dust from the mine tailings is too dense, the dust from DU is much finer grain and was deposited much closer to inhabited areas to start with. Of course, reports of the presence of abnormally high levels of uranium in the urine of people in Iraq and Afghanistan is a total coincidence to start with…

If uranium is found in the Australian dust, then the military argument will have no credibility at all.

Nuclear lies being promoted in New York

Christina Macpherson's websites & blogs

Christina Macpherson's websites & blogs

Beyond Nuclear said it some time ago: “Nuclear power has been kept outside of climate change mitigation mechanisms to date. However, some evidence shows that the nuclear lobby could be preparing its comeback in Copenhagen to have this dirty energy labeled as clean or carbon-free and thus benefit from new subsidies.”

And – lo and behold! Britain’s PM is there spruiking “Atoms for Peace!”. We’re supposed to believe that promoting nuclear energy will, by some magic,  reduce nuclear weapons?

China’s President Hu urges nuclear as the solution to global warming. And – he’s even pushing the idea of rich countries financing nuclear power to poor countries, so that they can buy nuclear technology from the rich countries!

Now that really is dandy for the nuclear lobby!

‘Peaceful’ Nuclear Tests – legacy of disease and birth defects

Effects Of ‘Peaceful’ Nuclear Tests Felt Decades Later

Radio Free Europe By Antoine Blua 21 Sept 09

During the Cold War, the United States and Soviet Union each explored the possibility of using nuclear explosions for “peaceful” purposes.

Their programs yielded little real benefit, but left behind radioactive footprints and trails of contamination from the nearly 150 tests from the projects — “Plowshare” in the United States and, more cryptically, “Program No. 7” in the Soviet Union. Continue reading

Nuclear power, tax-payer subsidised, and not popular in France

nuclear-costs1European Expert: U.S. Policymakers Are ‘As Wrong As They Can Be’ About The French Experience With Nuclear Power Marignac Says

REUTERS WASHINGTON, Sept. 15 /PRNewswire-

Nuclear power in France is not popular. The pursuit of the nuclear program in France is a permanently undemocratic choice. Contrary to the image presented in the United States, the French population is no more in favor of nuclear power than the European average – indeed a majority is opposed to the building of new plants. Surveys repeatedly show that the public lacks confidence in the institutional promoters of nuclear power. Continue reading

Myth that nuclear power promotes ‘energy security’

European Expert: U.S. Policymakers Are ‘As Wrong As They Can Be’ About The French Experience With Nuclear Power Marignac Says

REUTERS WASHINGTON, Sept. 15 /PRNewswire

“………– Nuclear power in France has not promoted energy independence. Nuclear power in France is a major presence, providing 76 percent of electricity produced in 2008. However, electricity accounted for only 20.7 percent of the final energy consumption in France that year. Excluding electricity exports, the overall contribution of nuclear power to France’s final energy consumption is only in the range of 14 percent. Continue reading

‘Fourth Generation’ Nuclear Power

ENERGY BULLETIN by Jim Green 25 August 09

‘Integral fast reactors’ and other ‘fourth generation’ nuclear power concepts have been gaining attention, in part because of comments by US climate scientist James Hansen.

…… There are two main problems……. nuclear power could at most make a modest contribution to climate change abatement, mainly because it is used almost exclusively for electricity generation which accounts for about one-quarter of global greenhouse emissions. Continue reading

POWER POLITICS: West Virginia redefines dirty energy as “alternative”

POWER POLITICS: West Virginia redefines dirty energy as “alternative” FACING SOUTH 14 July 09  “………. In the recent legislative session, Gov. Joe Manchin (D) (in photo at right) championed and state lawmakers approved an energy portfolio standard bill requiring 25% of generation to come from “alternative and renewable” sources by 2025. But the new standard, which goes into effect this month, has defined “alternative” to include……………………… nuclear power, which releases radioactive pollution to the environment and also produces dangerous waste products.
The West Virginia Environmental Council head lobbyist Donald S. Garvin Jr. blasted the new standard in an op-ed:
No other state includes natural gas as a source of “alternative” energy. Nuclear energy is included by only a few, and they specify “advanced generation” nuclear facilities.
