Wales has natural advantage to develop 100% renewable energy

Wales ‘poised for £50 billion of renewable energy investment’,  Low Carbon Economy9/15/2010 Wales could receive significant benefits from the development of the renewable energy industry, according to the Welsh Assembly Government (WAG).Speaking at an energy summit in Tredegar, first minister Carwyn Jones, said that the government would be working closely with industry to encourage the development of low carbon energy sources.

“The next 15 years could see some £50 billion plus of investment in energy projects in Wales,” Mr Jones said……By the year 2050 at the latest, the assembly government hopes to produce all electricity, heat and transport energy needs from renewable sources, which it claims can be achieved because of “Wales’ natural advantages”. ADNFCR-1235-ID-800065706-ADNFCR Wales ‘poised for £50 billion of renewable energy investment’ – Low Carbon Economy

A new renewable energy economy idea from World Bank

the World Bank, which is a bank first and foremost, is the right place to build that next economy

Signs of Energy at the World Bank – NYTimes.com September 14, 2010,  By ANDREW C. REVKIN quotes  Daniel Kammen, chief technical specialist for renewable energy and energy efficiency at the World Bank.…..”The biggest hurdle is we still don’t value financially the environmental and social damage we’re doing with our current fossil-fuel economy. The economist’s term for that is “the externalities” – the things we’re not including in our calculus. Everything from the negative impacts of floods, sea-level rise, drought. I would like to think that at a place like the World Bank, which is focused on the bottom line, we have a natural advantage in terms of putting a price on many of these social and environmental damages. And, after all, if a banker can’t focus on the bottom line, who can?… Continue reading

Renewable energy 17%, nuclear 2% in new generation since 2000

Globally, the shift to clean energy sources has been gradual. Since 2000, nearly a third of new power generation has come from burning coal. Another third has been fired by natural gas – less greenhouse gas-intensive, but still a fossil fuel. Carbon dioxide-free energy sources have made up less than one fifth of the new generation. Of that, 17 per cent has been renewable energy – largely solar, wind and hydroelectricity…….Nuclear power, the largest source of installed low-carbon energy, has declined markedly since the 1980s and made up just 2 per cent.

USA using less fossil fuels, and more renewables

Hey kids, we used less energy and more renewable tech in 2009! | ZDNet, By Heather Clancy | August 30, 2010, Well, here’s a refreshing bit of news for a Monday afternoon: A new data set released by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory reports that we used a lot less coal and petroleum last year, compared with 2008. Meanwhile, there were demonstrable increases in the use of renewable energy sources, especially generation systems based on wind technologies.
The researchers attribute the decrease in coal and petroleum use to lower electricity demand, a shift to natural gas as a fuel source, and wind power production offsets……Hey kids, we used less energy and more renewable tech in 2009! | ZDNet
