In-situ uranium mining gets stringent rules to protect groundwater

Among other things, the new rules: Require uranium companies to restore groundwater quality to its pre-mining condition or better….Require baseline water quality testing for all in-situ uranium projects during the prospecting phase.

Uranium looking like a poor investment

Cameco profit falls as it cuts uranium sales forecast -. Steel Guru , 18 Aug 2010, Cameco Corporation reported a weaker Q2 operating profit as results were hurt by lower uranium sales volumes and a lower realized uranium selling price.The top Canadian uranium producer also lowered its 2010 uranium sales forecast to 30 million pounds from a range of 31 million pounds to 33 million pounds as some customers deferred deliveries into 2011.Cameco said that it expects 2010 uranium revenues to fall 10% to 15% below 2009 levels compared with its prior forecast of 5% to 10% decline….. Colorado uranium mill not likely to reopen

Uranium pullback, High Country News, Jodi Peterson | Aug 18, 2010 It looks like Colorado won’t have a functioning uranium mill anytime soon – to the relief of anti-nuclear advocates.We reported in July that Cotter Corp. was planning to reopen its Canon City site by 2014. Legislation passed this spring means that Cotter would have to clean up prior contamination before starting to process uranium ore again. Now the company plans to stop the monitoring it was doing for toxic emissions at the site — a signal that it won’t continue trying to reopen the mill…….

Brazil enriching uranium, and potential for nuclear weapons

Brazil continues to have a program to produce enriched uranium for power plants, and opened its first uranium enrichment plant in 2006.

The groups say the government improperly excluded the vent project from federal regulations, deeming it a “special use” rather than a traditional mining operation.
“The agency thus illegally bypassed the strict permitting and environmental protection requirements of its special use regulations,” the groups claim.

Legal action against uranium exploration

Conservation groups sue to block uranium exploration | The Salt Lake Tribune, 31 July 2010, A trio of Moab conservation groups has filed suit challenging a decision by the U.S. Forest Service to allow uranium exploration in the Manti-La Sal National Forest.The organizations — Uranium Watch, Center for Water Advocacy and Living Rivers — say the Forest Service gave Denison Mines Corp. permission to drill 16 exploration holes and two radon vent holes as part of an expansion of the Pandora Uranium Mine without doing a full environmental analysis.Their suit, filed Thursday in U.S. District Court in Salt Lake City, seeks to overturn the decision to allow the drilling.The U.S. Attorney’s Office had no comment on the lawsuit.Pamela Manson

Senator Says Uranium Plant Could Cost Billions More Than Planned NTI: Global Security Newswire, July 27, 2010 U.S. Senator Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) yesterday suggested the expense of building a highly enriched uranium processing center at the Y-12 National Security Complex in Tennessee might ultimately amount to between $4 billion and $5 billion, the Knoxville News Sentinel reported. (see GSN, Oct. 29, 2009).
