Little chance of Indian govt passing Nuclear Liability Bill
Desperate govt reaches out to Left. Indian Express.com, 16 Aug 2010, Keen to push through the nuclear liability Bill in the ongoing session of Parliament, Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee Friday reached out to the Left to build a consensus on the contentious Bill.
However, given the Bill is crucial to implementing the India-US nuclear deal, which they had unsuccessfully tried to block, there is little chance of the Left parties coming on board.
At the meeting, CPM’s Sitaram Yechury and CPI’s D Raja listed the Left’s four objections to the Bill. Its primary concern is that it virtually exempts foreign suppliers from any liability in case of an accident — this, Left leaders say, was done at the instance of the US…… Desperate govt reaches out to Left

Russia’s secrecy over wildfires promotes public anxiety
“The first thing that should be done is that the Russian government should be fully transparent about what’s going on. As long as not only the people but also international experts are not really informed about what’s going on, it is a major problem.
Lack of transparency over fires fuels fears over Russia nuclear danger – swissinfo, Jessica Dacey, 13 Aug, 2010, Russian wildfires have spread to areas contaminated by the Chernobyl disaster, raising concerns that Russia should be doing more to tackle the crisis. Greenpeace Switzerland says a more transparent approach by the Russian government is needed so that the general public is better informed and outside experts can help.

Nuclear radiation threat always there for 3 million Americans
The Federal Emergency Management Agency reports that nearly 3 million Americans live within 10 miles of an operating nuclear power plant.
Although the Nuclear Regulatory Commission monitors these facilities closely, accidents are always possible. Dangerous levels of radiation could come our way.
Nuclear threats close to home – Honesdale, PA – Wayne Independent. 11 Aug 29010, What took place at PPL’s Susquehanna nuclear power plant near Berwick shook a few people up on Tuesday. It also served notice that nuclear disasters are possible — or at least the threat of them.Nuclear power plants aren’t on our radar that much these days. We don’t often think about Three Mile Island or the movie “The China Syndrome.” For the most part, we have grown to believe that the production of nuclear power plant energy is almost as safe as flying the friendly skies each day. There are no incidents and everything goes off without a hitch.
Until Tuesday. Continue reading
The ‘friendly atom” and its nuclear doomsday threat
the “new nuclear South” may be content with cheaper, quicker produced DU (Depleted Uranium) weapons, and of course the almost instant Dirty Bomb potential of large civil reactors in the national territories of their regional rivals and enemies.
The friendly atom can never be friendly
The Doomsday Threat Of The “Nuclear Renaissance” : The Market Oracle, 12 Aug 2010“………., the developing South is now the prime focus of nuclear industry hopes for ever bigger contracts. In these countries, the civil-to-military route for developing nuclear weapons using supposedly civil-only nuclear technology has however already been resoundingly proven, up to 20 or 25 years ago by India and Pakistan, South Africa and the “special case” of Israel. Legal action seeking disclosure of USA nuclear loan guarantees
“This is too large a sum of taxpayer’s money, being spent on too risky a project for there to be this much cover-up and secrecy. This is the first award of what could be tens of billions of dollars more in new federal subsidies for the nuclear industry — setting the precedent of hiding the financial ball from the public in round one is a bad start,”

How very quickly a politician can reverse his principles!
How could we possibly have thought Chris Huhne was anti-nuclear? By David Hughes Telegraph UK, August 9th, 2010 Chris Huhne, the Energy Secretary, has been the victim of a terrible misunderstanding, he claimed on BBC’s Today programme this morning. We all believe he’s anti-nuclear power – but he’s not. Dear me, no. His previous position, he insisted, had been “misunderstood” and he is actually in favour of nuclear being part of the UK’s energy mix….
Could this post from his very own web-site on November 5, 2007, offer a clue?…………Ministers must stop the side-show of new nuclear power stations now. Nuclear is a tried, tested and failed technology and the Government must stop putting time, effort and subsidies into reviving this outdated industry. The nuclear industry’s key skill over the past half-century has not been generating electricity, but extracting lashings of taxpayers’ money……
