Arizona nuclear reactor closing permanently

Univ. of Ariz. plans to shut down research reactor Google News By BOB CHRISTIE (AP)22 Dec 09 The University of Arizona plans to shut down its 51-year-old nuclear reactor by mid-2010, ending a half-century of specialized nuclear research and training at the Tucson school. The writing has been on the wall for the reactor’s demise since the late 1990s, said the professor who runs the UA Nuclear Research Lab. That’s when falling demand for nuclear engineers led the university to end specialized degree programs that had fed hundreds of engineers into the nuclear Navy and private nuclear industry. The reactor’s license from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission expires next year, and with a rigorous re-licensing process, the decision was made to shut the reactor down.

Kyoto Protocol defined nuclear energy as neither clean nor renewable

Copenhagen, nuclear power, and the Clean Development Mechanism Nuclear Reaction, by Justin, 18 Dec 09

“……..For those who don’t know it,the Clean Development Mechanism  the CDM is a system set up under the Kyoto Protocol which allows industrialised countries committed to reducing their greenhouse gas emissions to earn carbon credits by investing in low-carbon projects in developing countries rather than building more expensive projects in their own countries.

Nuclear energy was specifically excluded from the CDM at the United Nations Framework Convention of Climate Change conference in 2001. Continue reading

Why nuclear power is useless against global warming

Nuclear power not the answer to global warming Bleeding Heartland by: desmoinesdem Wed Dec 17, 2009 To avoid the most catastrophic impacts of global warming, the U.S. needs to cut power plant emissions roughly in half over the next 10 years.
*       Nuclear power is too slow to contribute to this effort. No new reactors are now under construction and building a single reactor could take 10 years or longer, while costing billions of dollars. Continue reading

Failure of nuclear non-proliferation

The failing diplomatic effort to contain the bomb’s spread By Bennett Ramberg — Special to GlobalPost

December 16, 2009
LOS ANGELES — On Nov. 26 in his final report to the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Board of Governors before retiring after a long distinguished career, Director General Mohamed ElBaradei dared to utter what no other senior public figure would about Iran’s nuclear portfolio: “We have effectively reached a dead end.”

Coming from the individual who has done the most to coax Tehran away from developing a nuclear weapons breakout capacity, the statement proved to be stark acknowledgement that diplomacy has failed.

Nuclear disarmament nonsense

Christina Macpherson's websites & blogs

Now really – does this make any sense to you? The  International Commission on Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament  offers this change to a “no first use” policy  – encouraging countries to make an initial statement to this effect – “the sole purpose of the possession of nuclear weapons is to deter the use of such weapons – “

This kind of stuff from world leaders shows us, as does Copenhagen, that we really can’t expect much sense from them. Let’s not feel too unkindly about well-meaning individuals such as Obama Barack, and Australia’s Kevin Rudd. They are, as Ralph Nader explained recently – “corporate prisoners”
