What a Nuclear War would do to Climate
Ho Hum Nuclear Winter Overcoming Bias 22 Dec 09 “……The effects of a war involving the entire current global nuclear arsenal … [include] a global average surface cooling of –7°C to –8°C persists for years, and after a decade the cooling is still –4°C (Fig. 2). … Cooling of more than –20°C occurs over large areas of North America and of more than –30°C over much of Eurasia, including all agricultural regions. So, the first news about nuclear winter was shocking enough to induce cold war adversaries to agree to big cuts.
Today we know the situation is even worse – not only is nuclear winter easier than we thought to trigger, but more nations now have big enough arsenals to trigger it. Yet today there is far less international discussion or momentum to prevent such disaster. Why the difference?

Failure of nuclear non-proliferation
The failing diplomatic effort to contain the bomb’s spread By Bennett Ramberg — Special to GlobalPost
December 16, 2009
LOS ANGELES — On Nov. 26 in his final report to the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Board of Governors before retiring after a long distinguished career, Director General Mohamed ElBaradei dared to utter what no other senior public figure would about Iran’s nuclear portfolio: “We have effectively reached a dead end.”Coming from the individual who has done the most to coax Tehran away from developing a nuclear weapons breakout capacity, the statement proved to be stark acknowledgement that diplomacy has failed.
Nuclear disarmament nonsense
Now really – does this make any sense to you? The International Commission on Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament offers this change to a “no first use” policy – encouraging countries to make an initial statement to this effect – “the sole purpose of the possession of nuclear weapons is to deter the use of such weapons – “
This kind of stuff from world leaders shows us, as does Copenhagen, that we really can’t expect much sense from them. Let’s not feel too unkindly about well-meaning individuals such as Obama Barack, and Australia’s Kevin Rudd. They are, as Ralph Nader explained recently – “corporate prisoners”
Children want nuclear bombs eliminated – why don’t adults?
(Commenting on Report Of The International Commission On Nuclear Non-Proliferation And Disarmament.) Quoting from the report “Nuclear weapons are the most inhumane weapons ever conceived, inherently indiscriminate in those they kill and maim, and with an impact deadly for decades,” the report says. ”Climate change may be the global policy issue that has captured most attention in the last decade, but the problem of nuclear weapons is at least its equal in terms of gravity – and much more immediate in its potential impact.”………….
