The News That Matters about the Nuclear Industry Fukushima Chernobyl Mayak Three Mile Island Atomic Testing Radiation Isotope

Nuclear news – week to 23 August

A bit of good news – Antibody “master key” discovery could neutralize all COVID variants.

Climate change-  The Social, Cultural, and Economic Implications

Nuclear. A strange contradiction going on – with double messaging coming from the nuclear lobby and IAEA. We must bear in mind that the goal of the IAEA is to  “assist  its Member States, in the context of social and economic goals, in planning for and using nuclear science and technology for various peaceful purposes, including the generation of electricity, and facilitates the transfer of such technology and knowledge in a sustainable manner to developing Member States” – in other words – to promote nuclear power.

So -we are being told that the safe way towards climate action is nuclear power, and especially now , as we need to avoid Russian gas.  (Apparently Russian uranium is OK. ) At the same time, the IAEA is warning that the presence of the Zaporizhia nuclear plant in a military zone is a threat to European, even global safety.  So – nuclear reactors are safe, but in some circumstances, very unsafe.

The Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty (NPT) is a fraud as the nuclear Mafia continue to spend $billions on their nuclear arsenals

Nuclear news this week

Some bits of good news –  100% renewables is feasible worldwide at low cost.

big increase in numbers of the beautiful chameleon-like  giant cuttlefish (above). The Spencer Gulf is home to the only known large breeding colony of Giant Australian Cuttlefish. The increase is due to the re-imposition of a temporary fishing ban in the area . But in 2012, the federal government subtly  changed law to enable BHP to expand its uranium mine, and to build a desalination plant that would alter the breeding area, and eliminate this species. Work of the Conservation Council of South Australia, a public outcry, and a petition, helped to prevent the extinction of this species

TODAY. Russia and Ukraine blame each other. Whom to believe?

My natural inclination is to not believe either of them. They’re both putting out propaganda, sure to include many lies.

The big issue right now is the danger around the Zaporizhzhia (or Zaporozhye) nuclear power station – the largest in Europe, which is being shelled by artillery. The Ukrainians say that Russia is doing this. The Russians say that it’s the Ukrainianians.

Of course, we being good Anglophone news absorbers, we are obliged to believe that the Russians are shelling Zaporizhzhia , a place where they are now in control. We have to believe that it is always the Russians’ fault, otherwise we are pretty much traitorous, (and our publications like this one, will be censored and erased from Google Search)

The picture above shows the Zaporizhzhia NPP and its huge collection of nuclear wastes. No wonder that Mr Grossi, head of IAEA security is tearing his hair out in anxiety over this perilous situation.

Now I, (treacherously) think that it is the Ukrainians who are shelling the nuclear station. They do have a motive, as they are desperate to get it back under Ukrainian control. But why would the Russians want to attack the place, where they’re already in control? “In order to discredit Ukraine” – say Zelensky and co. Gimme a break. The Rusians may be awful etc etc, but they;re not stupid.

TODAY. My Trumpian dilemma

Here’s my dilemma.

The last thing I want to do is to promote the cause of Donald Trump

BUT – on some matters -the Trumpians might be right, and telling the truth!

We are now brainwashed by the corporate media into a religious belief that Ukraine and Taiwan are good, and Russia and China are evil.

Anyone who says otherwise is a stooge of Russian and Chinese ”disinformation. Right?

TODAY. Rewriting history in the interest of hating Russia.

Russians are no saints. The Russian army is no saint. I’m sure there’ve been atrocities by Russia, especially in Stalin’s time, and during World War 2, and now , in Ukraine.

BUT – now we are all, especially in the anglophone media, being systematically taught to hate Russia.

Today we learn that Poland  is shutting down the Russian exhibition at the Auschwitz-Birkenau memorial and museum. This doesn’t matter – OR DOES IT?

It’s pretty easy to wipe out the history of the Russian soldiers liberating Auschwitz. You see, that happened on January 27 1945, well before the war ended in May. There was very little publicity about the liberation. In later months, as the war was ending liberation of other camps by the British was widely publicised.

In fierce fighting on the outskirts of Auschwitz, 231 Russian soldiers died. In the main camp, and a subsidiary camp, the soldiers found 12000 prisoners alive. One Russian soldier spoke Yiddish to the prisoners, eliciting a response from the terrified prisoners. Russian soldiers worked with Polish Red Cross to help the prisoners – setting up a hospital onsite. Russians first heard the stories from the surviving prisoners.

Denialism of history is a curse that is helping to bring the human species closer to self-annihilation. To add to a current wave of denialism of the holocaust, we now have denialism of the heroic role of many Russians in World War 2, and of their co-operative role with Polish citizens in caring for the sick and emaciated Auschwitz prisoners.

TODAY. All the fuss about Taiwan doesn’t make sense. Has anyone noticed?

Since 1979, USA, and its minions like Australia, have recognised that Taiwan is part of the Republic of China, and is NOT an independent nation.

Since 1997 USA and its minions have recognised that Hong Kong is part of the Republic of China and is NOT an independent nation. When China cracked down on the Hong Kong administration, USA, Australia tut-tutted, and there was no suggestion of doing anything about it – let alone go to war.

Now, we’ve got Nancy Pelosi, the Congress Speaker, leading the push to provoke the Chinese government to a militaristic response.

Now you might wonder why on Earth countries so far way, USA, Australia would want to invite nuclear war and destruction if China cracks down on the Taiwan administration.

I can’t see China wanting to invite nuclear war and destruction if USA cracked down on Hawaii, or Australia on Tasmania.

But of course, I forgot – American authorities are in the grip of Pentagon war hawks, and of Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, Boeing – and all the rest of the weapons corporation. And they just gotta have a war – or at least – an enemy to get to the brink – and keep the profitable business going.

The whole apparently unstoppable procession towards war makes no sense. But that doesn’t matter – the mindless corporate media loves it. Roll on – Ukraine catastrophe – and then we’ll move on to Taiwan catastrophe!

Nuclear news this week

I had trouble finding “good news” for today. So, I’ll put in a thought of my own. My own country, Australia, today gives some hope, For the first time, we have a government really trying to include our First Nations people in decision-making. Not only is Australia headed for a referendum to bring indigenous voices into our Parliament – with hope to redress the wrongs of 200 years, but also the hope that indigenous knowledge and culture will advise and further the mighty task of healing our damaged environment.

It is all-important that their message is remembered, and that denialism of these truly awful horrors does not prevail.

TODAY. From France – a statement that symbolises the primacy of the nuclear industry over the environment

The plants, insects, the fish, the frogs, crabs, …… they don’t get a say in these decisions.

“we should rethink the temperature thresholds of rivers” – says the chief inspector of France’s nuclear safety authority.

In these simple, seemingly innocuous words, we get a clear look at what the powers that be in our modern world think is important, and what is not..

If the big boys decide to let hotter water into the rivers, and ruin the habitat of so many plants and animals – well, the people aren’t going to get a vote on this, and the other species sure don’t get a say.

Western culture has evolved from a world-view that Man is superior to all creation. And we’re still well and truly in that world view. Indigenous cultures might have a different view – but hell – they don’t matter, do they? After all, they’ve never invented anything really clever – like nuclear technology, with the power to kill us all.

Busting the poorly informed pro-nuclear hype of Spectator Australia.

Today I encountered, for the first time the magazine “Spectator Australia”. I was drawn to it by the tantalising title of its article (25/7/22) “Politicians destroy nuclear when the world needs it most.”, by Alan Moran. The main message of the article seems to be that the stringent safety regulations are an unnecessary handicap to the nuclear industry, and cause unnecessary costs.

I was tempted to check on what sort of a magazine ”Spectator Australia” is. Crikey reported that :

The Spectator presents a stridently — often rabidly — ideological conservative perspective on Australian politics and society. ”

Much earlier, The Guardian reported on its British parent:

The magazine cleaves to a purple-faced, right-wing, pro-fox-hunting, climate-change-denying, insidiously Islamophobic worldview”

Ah well – that helps to explain this article. Here are just a few of my reflections on the article:

Nuclear power is reliable and safe” – as long as you don’t count Mayak, Santa Susanna, Church Rock, Chornobyl, submarine accidents, Windscale. Three Mile Island, Tokaimura, Fukushima …

“Deaths related to the industry are small” – yeah, when you don’t count the deaths caused by persuisten exposure to radiation – especially amongst nuclear workers. Later-developing cancers are not as newsworthy as sudden accidental deaths.
”Demonisation”, presumably by fanatic anti-nuclear people , has caused the downfall of the nuclear industry? Well, well – I had no idea that we were so effective. I thought that it was caused by the unaffordable costs. the intractaible waste problem, the nuclear weapons proliferation problem.

“risk aversiveness to whatever safety problems there may be” – that phrase speaks volumes – this mansplaining macho author isn’t even interested in knowing about risks!

Costs? Well the Fin Review and CSIRO don’t agree with this author https://www.afr.com/companies/energy/nuclear-energy-too-expensive-to-replace-fossil-fuels-20220711-p5b0pd

He quotes France – does he not know that France is in one hell of a pickle – nationalising the industry, shutting down reactors because of the heat, and the corrosion?

UK – he quotes Rishi Sunak – as Chancellor Sunak advised Boris against the big nuclear spend ! This article is a load of ignorant poppycock!

Nuclear news – week to 25 July

So much news, so overwhelming – the pandemic, climate extremes in China. South Asia, USA, Europe, UK.   In the middle of all the gloom, quite an inspiring article from science writer Julian Cribb,   with a method to save the world. He argues, passionately and persuasively for putting the ”weaker” sex in charge. In The Age of Women, Cribb says that If humanity is to survive the vast and growing threats it faces, women must assume the leadership of government, business, religion and social institutions around the world.

TODAY. In France, Global Heating is killing Nuclear Power – but wasn’t this supposed to be the other way around?

Oh dear! Macron’s dream of the mighty French global nuclear empire is looking a bit dodgy, as extreme heat is causing nuclear reactors to cut energy production, (as well as the fact that the aging fleet is corroded and unsafe)

But wait! it’s only the pesky world of nature that is causing this hiccup to the nuclear dream. It’s only the fish, and frogs, and plant life that are damaged by the release of hot nuclear cooling water. That is easily solved by just weakening, better still, scrapping the regulations that forbid the release of hot water.

Of course, there are wildfires too, with one already threatening the old Brennilis nuclear site.

But – Vive la France! Cool weather will come again. I mean – it’s all been a ”once in a hundred years” heat-wave. Won’t happen again. will it?

TODAY. The social media is the massage

Social media is making sweeping and dangerous changes to public information and politics. It’s not as if the effect of new media is a new phenomenon in Western culture.

For centuries, the Catholic church held grip on information – everything was in Latin, in hand-writing, and accessible only to a few – almost all monks and religious officials.

In the16th Century, the arrival of the printing press brought about drastic changes – the Bible in national languages, more widely accessible, and the spread of literacy – the rise of Protestant religions and of nationalism,

In the 1930s, the Nazis had a great time with new technology – radio.

Under Goebbels’s direction the Volksempfänger, or “people’s receiver,” was born.

Under Goebbels’s direction the cheap Volksempfänger, or “people’s receiver,” was developed . The Nazis took control of all radio organizations and programming. While many Germans did not read newspapers, radio was quickly taken up by the majority of households, and was also transmitted by loudspeakers in town squares. The nation was effectively blanketed by Nazi radio propaganda 11 hours a day, was to a certain extent brainwashed into acquiescence.

So – now we have the joys of Facebook. Twitter, Youtube and others, effectively controlled to a large degree by algorithms devised for such information authorities as the CIA, National Security Agency (NSA), and The Atlantic Council.

As we head towards World War 3, with the West against Russia-China, and the nuclear industry and weapons corporations salivating over the current and future profits, we are allowed (as Caitlin Johnstone has pointed out) – to freely express our dissent. It’s just that other people won’t actually get to read it or hear it.
