USA holds largest amount of concentrated radioactivity – time bombs!

The U.S. government should promptly take steps to reduce these risks by placing all spent nuclear fuel older than five years in dry, hardened storage casks like Germany did 25 years ago. …..

After more than 50 years, the quest for permanent nuclear waste disposal remains illusory. One thing, however, is clear, whether we like it or not: the largest concentrations of radioactivity on the planet will remain in storage at U.S. reactor sites for the indefinite future.

America’s Nuclear Spent-Fuel Time Bombs HUFFINGTON POST, Robert Alvarez, : 06/ 6/11 Japan’s nuclear disaster should serve as a wake-up call for the United States.

Now that many Americans have stopped paying attention to Japan’s nuclear catastrophe, shocking new details about its severity are finally coming to light. Continue reading →

Additional concerns in the U.S. this week include the safety of spent fuel pools and reactor venting systems. A new report by the Institute for Policy Studies charges that we are at greater risk than Japan of an accident occurring in fuel pools due to overcrowding beyond design capacity. It has also surfaced that engineers warned the NRC of design flaws in venting systems 5 years ago, with little action taken.

Unnecessary medical radiation endangers children and premature infants

Experts believe the negative effects of radiation are cumulative, meaning that the more radiation one receives, the higher the risk of cancer. This reality is especially concerning for premature infants whose development is constantly monitored through radiological exams

Children are Being Exposed to Unnecessary Radiation,  U.S. Politics Today , May 27, 2011, While over-radiation of anyone can cause burns and an increased risk of cancer, those concerns are amplified in children. – The most vulnerable of human beings are sometimes the most mistreated. Such is the case with premature infants.

In 2007, doctors at State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn discovered that hospital staff repeatedly over-radiated premature babies during X-rays and CT scans. For example, when chest x-rays were ordered for one newborn, he underwent 10 full body X-rays without being covered by a protective shield.

The Lack of Standardized Regulation

It is the responsibility of each state to set its own regulatory standards for radiological workers. However, several states have no regulations in place at all. That means that in many parts of the country workers are not required to possess any formal minimum qualifications before they begin irradiating people.

Fortunately, the American Society of Radiologic Technologists has long been lobbying Congress to pass the CARE bill, which is supported by 26 organizations that represent over half a million American health care professionals. The CARE bill mandates nationwide regulation of radiological workers. The regulation focuses on minimum educational and certification standards for entry into the radiological profession as well as continuing education requirements to ensure competent behavior…….

Experts believe the negative effects of radiation are cumulative, meaning that the more radiation one receives, the higher the risk of cancer. This reality is especially concerning for premature infants whose development is constantly monitored through radiological exams. At Downstate Medical Center, it was discovered that babies’ entire, unshielded bodies were being imaged instead of “coning” (limiting) the radiation to the specific area of the body being examined. Only time will tell how these babies’ bodies will be affected as a result.

The Case for Medical Malpractice and Other Lawsuits

As widespread concerns regarding over-radiation of infants, children and adults comes to light, more cancer patients will undoubtedly wonder whether their condition stems from excessive radiation exposure. Patients and their attorneys will increasingly need to analyze the images from any previous exams to determine the extent of their radiation exposure. Problematic results may be grounds for a medical malpractice lawsuit…..

Nuclear plant near Joplin vulenerable to tornadoes

‘Tornado Alley’ reactor not fully twister-proof, Google News, (AP)  27 May 11, WASHINGTON (AP) — The closest nuclear power plant to tornado-ravaged Joplin, Mo., was singled out weeks before the storm for being vulnerable to twisters.Inspections triggered by Japan’s nuclear crisis found that some emergency equipment and storage sites at the Wolf Creek nuclear plant in southeastern Kansas might not survive a tornado.

Specifically, plant operators and federal inspectors said Wolf Creek did not secure equipment and vehicles needed to fight fires, retrieve fuel for emergency generators and resupply water to keep nuclear fuel cool as it’s being moved.

Despite these findings, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission concluded that the plant met requirements put in place after the Sept. 11 attacks that are designed to keep the nuclear fuel cool and containment structures intact during an emergency….. U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission faces lawsuit from Vermont

Vermont, nuclear watchdog group file lawsuit against NRC,  SentinelSource.com, State, group file suit against NRC May 25, 2011, By Kyle Jarvis Vermont state officials are asking a federal court to have the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant’s recently renewed operating license temporarily revoked and reviewed by the court, according to court documents filed by state officials last week.

The state and the New England Coalition, a nuclear watchdog group, are suing the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission in federal court for what they say was a mishandling of the Vermont Yankee renewal process in March. n the lawsuit, Vermont Department of Public Service officials said the commission “acted arbitrarily, abused its discretion, and violated the clear mandate of the Clean Water Act.”State officials argue the commission should not have granted the 20-year license renewal without also requiring a new water quality certification, which they say the Clean Water Act mandates, according to court documents……..
