China on verge of unveiling nuclear deal with Pakistan Pakistan Daily, Pakistan Jun 15, 2010 China is on the verge of unveiling a nuclear deal with Pakistan that will, in effect, be “cocking a snook” at the world as it will be outside the purview of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), a noted security expert said.After the exception the NSG accorded to India in 2008 to enable the implementation of its civilian nuclear pact with the US, Pakistan had sought a similar deal from Washington and after having been turned down, “it now appears that China will soon announce its deal with Pakistan to export two nuclear reactors”. Balwant Garg, TNN, Jun 15, 2010, BATHINDA: After discovery of high levels of uranium in hair samples of a large number of mentally retarded children in Punjab’s Malwa region last year, another study suggests Punjab has become a hotspot of environmental toxicity of multiple types……….. The adverse health effects on plants, animals and humans are visible and some of the studies have proved this. “It’s clear that Punjab is in a deep ecological crisis with its ramifications on socio-economic and cultural aspects of its population,” said Dr Reyes Tirado, a scientist from the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom, who conducted the study in 50 villages in Muktsar, Bathinda and Ludhiana districts last year under a Greenpeace Research Laboratories investigation.

The Bill seeks to cap the level of compensation (likely at $450 million) in the event of an accident and makes the operator, not the supplier (US companies like GE and Westinghouse or France’s Areva), liable for it. Continue reading

DU hands out compensation to victims of radiation exposure- Hindustan Times, 12 June 2010, Delhi University on Friday handed out compensation of Rs 2 lakh each to victims of radiation exposure who suffered serious health hazards from radioactive waste disposed off by the institution.Several people at Mayapuri’s scrap market were exposed to radiation and were taken ill in April this year.One of them, Rajender (35), a worker at a shop in the scrap market, had died due to multiple organ failure at AIIMS after being exposed to radiation.Relief amount of Rs two lakh was handed over to Ram Jiyavan, Gaurav, Ram Kalap Yadav and Himanshu Jain, the victims who suffered injuries, a statement from the varsity said on Friday……The trail of the radioactive substance led to Delhi University’s Chemistry Department and it was found that the institution had disposed off the radioactive waste that reached the Mayapuri scrap market.
