Energy Minister Champika Ranawaka announced that the government intends to build the plant to fulfil increasing demands for energy Critics say Sri Lanka lacks the wherewithal to handle ordinary garbage – let alone nuclear waste….. the campaigners say that the island is full of natural sources of energy.Observers are also sceptical as to whether the country will be able to get the technological know-how to build such plant. Indian insurance company to cover nuclear accidents?
Irda to allow cover for N-accidents, New Delhi:, 27 Sept 10, The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority has decided to frame guidelines for allowing insurance cover for nuclear accidents.The agency is awaiting the the nuclear liability law to provide framework for the proposed rules. “Insurance companies would be happy in providing cover for nuclear accidents, if the customers show interest,” Irda chairman J Hari Narayan said. India is all set to engage in nuclear commercial trade with various countries following the clearance of a Nuclear Liability Bill in Parliament during the monsoon session. The bill now awaits for the nod of the President before becoming a law.More from News

Further proof of radiation-caused cancers in large scale research study
“People exposed to radiation who developed cancer also had a high risk of developing a second cancer, and the risk was similar for both solid tumors and leukemias in both men and women, regardless of age at exposure or duration betweenfirst and second primary cancers,” he said.
