When information is of a proprietary nature (design secrets, trade secrets, ingredients to a recipe like the Colonel’s fried chicken) or if it would reveal military secrets (position of naval ships, strength of forces etc.) it can be redacted from Freedom of Information documents.
Wrong way: Subversion of the Freedom of Information Act in the form of redacting information that is incriminating (of a criminal nature) and NOT trade secrets or military secrets.

Japan’s nuclear regulator Monday announced that highly radioactively contaminated water from the tsunami-stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant must eventually be released into the Pacific Ocean, saying that the plant cannot store huge amounts of coolant water at the site indefinitely, Japanese media have reported.
“I’m afraid that it is unavoidable to dump or release the water into the sea” after it is purified to levels recognized as safe under international standards, Shunichi
Tanaka, chairman of the newly-constituted Nuclear Regulatory Agency (NRA) told a news conference, as quoted by Agence France Presse.
Tepco has long struggled to deal with the massive amounts of water used to cool reactors that went into meltdown after being struck by an earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011.
Neighboring countries and local fishermen have expressed concern at the mooted release from the plant, where contaminated water was already believed to have escaped into sea.
“The situation at Fukushima is changing everyday,” Tanaka said, according to AFP. “Fukushima Daiichi has various risks. The accident has yet to be settled down.”
“It’s time to call in international oversight,” said Nils Bøhmer, Bellona’s general director and nuclear physicist, who, with other Bellona staff, has visited Fukushima.
“They need international help because irradiated water is now leaking and more will soon be dumped into the Pacific Ocean and the environment is by far not the best solution –this is an international issue,” he said.

David Webb, Chief Executive Officer of Origin Investments AB (Sweden): I think we should keep in mind that TEPCO declared plants 1, 2 and 3 to be in cold shut-down. And of course we now know that was not the case. Other people were pointing out that the cores had melted down through the facility. We now know that is the case. […]
[…] the most dangerous thing is the cooling pool of Unit 4. Now it is terribly dangerous because the entire hot core of reactor 4 had been removed and put in this cooling pool shortly before the tsunami. […]
The entire area is weakened and there is a great risk of an aftershock. Now this pool contains something on the order of 400 kg of hot plutonium. So, the thing that people should be aware of is that TEPCO is going to begin attempting to remove these rods […]
The media coverage of the situation has been almost non-existent. The public must become engaged and the governments must become engaged because this is a global threat. […]
This is perhaps the greatest threat humanity has ever faced. […] the measures that the Japanese government is discussing at this point are not sufficient, I believe. Other governments must become engaged in this.
While the world focuses on Syria and chemical weapons stockpiled by both sides in the conflict, other important issues are being ignored by the press.
First, although Assad is a ruler who needs to be deposed, the rebels offer a grim future for the war-torn country. They are supported by al-Qaeda, and would create a terrorist country if they came into power.
Secondly, and possibly the most important story no one’s paying enough attention to, is the very real possibility that the Fukushima power plant could become a greater nuclear disaster than Chernobyl.
After the earthquake, and ensuing tsunami, a meltdown occurred at the plant, virtually destroying any hope of making it operational again. The plant has been under a dismantling program since the disaster in 2011. However, the Tokyo Electric Company, which is in charge of the removal of radioactive material, appears incompetent.
Radioactive water has been leaking from the plant at the rate of 300 gallons every day. They have no way to contain it. There are 3,000 pounds of extremely radioactive fuel rods which must be removed from reactor number eight. Each rod must be removed individually and by human beings, not machines. One minor accident with the removal of these rods would cause an unstoppable meltdown, the ramifications of which are unpredictable and inconceivable in possibility.
This weekend it was reported that even more radioactivity is leaking from the plant.
Is the extreme danger of the very real possibility of a meltdown at Fukushima being covered up by the governments of the world? Are they suppressing the story, preventing the major news services from reporting the true conditions at the plant?
Governments around the world support nuclear power, even though Chernobyl and Fukushima prove that they have no knowledge of how to control the hazard after an accident.
The Japanese government has admitted that they have little confidence in the Tokyo Electric Company’s ability to dismantle Fukushima. The have used makeshift tanks to control the contaminated water, which is increasing in the amount of leakage, and the level of radioactivity.
Local residents in the area of the plant will never be able to return to their homes. They are not able to remove personal items such as family photos, etc., because they contain a dangerous level of radioactivity.
Reports say that a secondary meltdown at Fukushima would be greatly more destructive than the original in 2011. The fact is that nuclear power remains a dangerous option. The ‘experts’ have only been able to guess at the ‘what ifs.’
The truth about nuclear energy for peaceful purposes is that one accident is one too many. The destructive force creates an entire area that is uninhabitable and useless for any purpose.
I recently saw some aerial photographs of Chernobyl. It was reminiscent of the pictures of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
The American public was told after Three Mile Island that nothing of a serious nature could happen again. They told us that technology had advanced, and they knew how to control such a great force of nature. They lied. That was their job, and some of us believed them.
We will see the major news services report on Fukushima, but only after there is another nuclear disaster.
quite crazy levels of radiation are to be found in this hospital basement, as highly contaminated clothing from the initial days after the chernobyl disaster was disposed of here.
Where do I begin? Expect MORE leaks of highly radioactive water from the hundreds and hundreds of on site storage tanks built piss poor. The entire Pacific Ocean to be fully contaminated in 6 years? Qualification on that story, not sure they are using the right map on that one.. Trouble to remove the Highly Radioactive Damaged spent fuel rods in (simply reactor spent fuel pool #4 ALONE) that contains approx 14,000 Times the radiation from the single Hiroshima Bomb. Pacific Ocean already Boiling?… You’ll just have to see this report to believe all the problems they are having. Not to mention, they are mistreating employees… so they are also going to run out of workers. It’s suggested TEPCO step aside and let the government handle the ongoing crises. The problems they face seem insurmountable to overcome. Too many to even list…. WAY WAY WAY TOO MANY. (way to many to edit today, too)

Radiation at a tank holding highly contaminated water at Japan’s crippled Fukushima nuclear plant has spiked 18-fold, the plant’s operator said on Sunday.

Radiation of 1 800 millisieverts per hour – enough to kill an exposed person in four hours – was detected near the bottom of one storage tank on Saturday, Tokyo Electric Power Co , also known as Tepco, said.
An August 22 reading measured radiation of 100 millisieverts per hour at the same tank. A Tepco spokesman also said a new leak had been detected from a pipe connecting two other tanks.
The Fukushima plant was destroyed by a tsunami in March 2011 in the worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl a quarter of a century earlier.
With pleasure we announce that MURUROA NUCLEAR VETERANS GROUP is now a Registered SOCIETY . Approval was released 29th August 2013.

In 1973, the then Prime Minister of New Zealand, Norman Kirk, determined that the French Government where disregarding the World Court by continuing to test Nuclear Devices in the Pacific, namely at Mururoa Atoll (also pronounced Moruroa Atoll).
Mr Kirk sent a Government Representative the right honourable Fraser Colman, aboard the frigate HMNZS Otago, followed by the frigate HMNZS Canterbury to promote world opinion against nuclear testing.
STANDING ON THE DECK OF OTAGO, PRIME MINISTER KIRK PROMISED TO PROVIDE THE FULL RESOURCES OF NEW ZEALAND TO ENSURE THE SHIPS COMPANY WOULD BE LOOKED AFTER SHOULD THERE BE ISSUES AFTER RETURNING TO NEW ZEALAND.
UNFORTUNATELY THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED “UNLESS” THE INDIVIDUAL FITS INTO ONE OF THE CATEGORIES LISTED IN THEIR CREATED “PRESUMPTIVE LIST” . THE VIEW IS THAT THIS LIST NEEDS TO BE REVIEWED AND TO DATE THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENED, DESPITE REQUESTS TO THE MINISTER OF THE DAY IN CHARGE OF THE SAME.
This site is intended to keep the Families & Crew members of HMNZS Otago ,HMNZS Canterbury ,HMAS Supply that were on the “tour of duty” at MURUROA ATOLL in June, July and August 1973, along with the news media personnel, the Government representative (R.I.P.), and a representative from the National Laboratory, informed of medical and other developments that have transpired and affected NOT ONLY the personnel aboard these ships BUT also the Generations that have followed…. OUR CHILDREN & GRAND CHILDREN..

There were happy faces all round when 10 children from Chernobyl visited Morley .
The group from Belarus were in town on Thursday as part of a recuperative holiday.
They were treated to lunch by Mark and Chris Lupton at Luppy’s Diner in Queen Street, who provided food and drinks for the children and their host families as well as a fun ride in the diner’s genuine American vehicles.
The trip was organised by the Leeds branch of the Chernobyl Children’s Project which was set up in 1996 to help children affected by the fallout from the catastrophic explosion of a nuclear reactor in Chernobyl in 1986.
Radiation levels in Belarus are still high and will remain so for many years to come.
This results in a high level of cancer, leukaemia and other medical conditions amongst children and adults alike.
Diana Taylor from the project said: “The aim of the visit is to give the children a month of healthy fresh air, good food, and interesting activities.
“Research suggests that one month here gives the children up to three extra years of healthy life.
“The project is a self-funding charity and heavily reliant on volunteers – both to host children and to help with fundraising – as the costs of bringing the children to the UK are quite high.
“The project also relies on local organisations and businesses to sponsor the various activities.
“It is very gratifying that local businesses are able to offer their help to make this a holiday which the children will never forget.”
GREENVILLE, S.C. — An advocacy group is suing federal nuclear regulators over documents they say would prove the government is covering up concern over what would happen to Oconee Nuclear Station if the Jocassee Dam ever fails.
The Greenville News reports Saturday (http://grnol.co/16YZJR0 ) that Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility filed a lawsuit in federal court in Washington against the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
The suit says the NRC improperly cited the Freedom of Information Act to withhold internal communications that show NRC engineers’ concern over Oconee’s plans for dealing with a dam failure.
The group says the NRC refused to release some records and released edited versions of others.
An NRC spokesman says the agency will present its case in court.
When the Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev published his periodic table of elements in 1869, there were just fifty-nine entries on it. The table grouped those elements—hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon, along with less familiar substances like osmium, rhodium, yttrium—according to their shared chemical properties and the weight of their atoms.
The table also contained thirty-three empty spaces that implied that there were elements still to be discovered. He gave these still-hypothetical elements names like “ekasilicon,” “ekaaluminum” and “ekaboron,” based on their expected similarities to known substances; the spaces were filled by germanium, gallium and scandium, respectively. (Eka is a Sanskrit prefix meaning “one,” so you can think of the names as silicon.1, aluminum.1 and so on) By year 1939, all of Mendeleev’s boxes had been filled in; the last one was “ekacesium,” now called francium.
What Mendeleev couldn’t have imagined was that scientists would one day begin creating elements not found naturally. Just a few days ago, the fabrication of one of the heaviest elements yet was confirmed by Swedish scientists working at the G.S.I. Helmholtz Center for Heavy Ion Research, in Darmstadt, Germany. Its provisional name is ununpentium.
Alan Robock, Distinguished Professor of Climatology at Rutgers University and a consultant with IPPNW on the climate effects of nuclear weapons, has posted an informative blog for the American Geophysical Union on the lessons of volcanoes for both global warming and the catastrophic global cooling that would result from nuclear war.
“While the world has banned cluster munitions, land mines, biological weapons, and chemical weapons,” Prof. Robock concludes, “the worst weapons of mass destruction, nuclear weapons, are still not banned. They cannot be used, they do not serve as a deterrent, and their use would be suicide. We can rid the world of nuclear weapons so we have the luxury of working to address global warming without the fear of global catastrophe. For more information, please visit my website and join the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons.”
Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority has informed the International Atomic Energy Agency that it has rated a leak of radioactive water at Tokyo Electric Power Company’s (TEPCO) Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station at level 3 on the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale (INES). Previously, TEPCO rated the 300-ton leak of contaminated water at level 1, or an “anomaly.” The plant’s initial 2011 meltdown in three of its reactors was labeled a level 7 “major accident.”
