Radiologists warn on CT scans for children
Picture of Health: Doctors urge minimal use of CT scans in children , Baltimore Sun, 30 Sept, 10, Radiologists at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center are warning doctors to be careful about performing CT scans on children.Because CT scans and other tests that use X-ray technology expose the body to large doses of radiation, too much use can expose kids to cancer, the radiologists said.Nearly 7 million CT scans are performed on children every year in the United States and many are avoidable, the doctors found.Children’s growing tissues and rapidly dividing cells are more vunerable to the effects of radiation.Exposure at such a young age also gives cancerous mutations that much more time to develop into full-blown cancer. A single cat scan can deliver a much higher dose of radiation to a small child’s body than to an adult.
Parents should ask doctors if there are alternatives to CT scans. The Hopkins doctors recommend alternatives such as MRIs and ultrasounds.
Parents should also let doctors know if their child has had previous CT scans.

University’s nuclear radiation mishap

September 29, 2010 – The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is investigating a Kansas State University nuclear reactor operator’s exposure to radiation during an experiment, a university official said Wednesday…..TRIGA Mark II reactor had been shut down since Sept. 22 to accommodate the NRC’s evaluation of the mishap. Germany’s nuclear plans worrying Austrian government
Austria passed a law in 1978 prohibiting the use of nuclear energy for electricity generation.
It has repeatedly expressed concern about the safety of a number of nuclear power plants in neighbouring countries, such as Germany, Slovakia and Slovenia.

Israel burying nuclear waste in Palestinan farmlands
Burying Nuclear Waste in the Palestinian Territories Special Palestine Cry Blog 28 sept 10, Palestinian farmers from Yatta village south of Hebron in the West Bank have revealed that the Israeli military continues to bury nuclear waste in their farmlands at Al-Masafer near the armistice line in the West Bank. The farmers said that the military forces “IDF” brings trucks loaded with waste suspected to be radioactive waste and is burying it in their lands after they force them to evacuate the area.The farmers said that they were able to hide themselves in some caves and watch the military operation. They stated that the Israeli soldiers who declared the area as a military zone were wearing white overalls over their military uniforms during the burial. Radiation safety protocols needed for CT scans
Currently, there are no safety protocols in place to measure and record the radiation doses being administered to patients who receive CT scans.
