Lithuania is to shut down its one and only nuclear power station in Visaginas on 31 December.
One hour before midnight, staff at the Ignalina plant will flick the switches, shutting down the only nuclear reactor in the Baltic states.
The closure of the Soviet-era plant was a condition of Lithuania’s membership of the European Union…..It was built to the same design as Chernobyl, which was behind the worst civil nuclear disaster in history when one of its reactors overheated in 1986.

A thermal plant is one heck of a lot cleaner than a nuclear plant when you consider the construction materials and nuclear waste. And, unlike PV panels or wind, solar thermal plants produce power in steady, large quantities.

Fire kills two at Indian nuclear centre
Two killed in fire at India nuclear research centre BBC News 30 Dec 09 A fire at an Indian nuclear research facility has killed two people….the blaze, which broke out in a laboratory, was brought under control within 45 minutes.Indian police officials told news agencies that the charred bodies of two research students were found on the third floor of the laboratory.
The centre has a number of nuclear research reactors and is one of India’s key research centres for both nuclear power and nuclear weapons.

French nuclear power giant AREVA is talking to a group of investors about putting one or two atomic power plants in California’s Central Valley.
Paris-based Areva said Tuesday it’s signed a letter of intent with Fresno Nuclear Eneegy Group LLC, which it calls “a group of investors,” about early work necessary to bring the company’s advanced EPR technology to California…………
Areva has been working on the EPR project in Finland for four years, a third reactor on an island at Olkiluoto, on the country’s southwestern coast. That 1,600 megawatt project was set to start generating power this year, but has been delayed.
