Aging nuclear power plant too costly to clean up
Potential for another meltdown? Nuclear Reaction 29 Dec 09 Debate over the future of the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant has developed into a complex game of chicken between executives with Entergy Nuclear Vermont and Democratic leaders of the state Legislature. Entergy, which has owned the Vernon facility since 2002, says if it does not win approval for its plan to sell Vermont Yankee and five other nuclear power plants to a spin-off company called Enexus, it will likely close the Vermont nuclear plant as scheduled in 2012. Nuclear power being rejected from grassroots
A Quiet but HUGE No Nukes Triumph, by Harvey Wasserman 24 Dec 09
In the wake of Copenhagen, an unheralded but hard-fought No Nukes victory has moved us closer to a green-powered Earth.
It has happened in upstate New York, where the Unistar Nuclear Energy front group asked the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to delay its application to build a reactor at Oswego, near Syracuse. Meanwhile, in Texas, the San Antonio city council’s deliberations over building two new reactors has disintegrated into recriminations, resignations and firings over a multi-billion-dollar price jump in projected cost estimates, a furor that could doom reactor construction there as well. Undemocratric nature of Canadian nuclear push
The Sask Party Uranium Response: “We Don’t Care What You Think Accidental Deliberations December 21, 2009 “I’ve posted previously about the Sask Party’s latest declaration of its intention to push nuclear development regardless of what Saskatchewan’s citizens might think. But it’s worth looking in somewhat more detail at just how thoroughly the Wall government has rejected the public’s input into nuclear policy. Continue reading

Kyoto Protocol defined nuclear energy as neither clean nor renewable
Copenhagen, nuclear power, and the Clean Development Mechanism Nuclear Reaction, by Justin, 18 Dec 09
“……..For those who don’t know it,the Clean Development Mechanism the CDM is a system set up under the Kyoto Protocol which allows industrialised countries committed to reducing their greenhouse gas emissions to earn carbon credits by investing in low-carbon projects in developing countries rather than building more expensive projects in their own countries.
Nuclear energy was specifically excluded from the CDM at the United Nations Framework Convention of Climate Change conference in 2001. Continue reading

India’s Nuclear Power Plans to Borrow $6.5 Billion By Archana Chaudhary Dec. 17 (Bloomberg) –– Nuclear Power Corp. of India, the nation’s monopoly atomic generator, plans to borrow as much as $6.5 billion to fund six new reactors. The state-run company will raise about 140 billion rupees ($3 billion) from loans and bonds to build four 700-megawatt plants, Chairman Shreyans Kumar Jain said in a phone interview from Mumbai today. It will also seek about $3.5 billion in loans for two 1,000-megawatt reactors it’s developing in Kudankulam with Russia’s Rosatom Corp., he said…… Continue reading
Nuclear disarmament nonsense
Now really – does this make any sense to you? The International Commission on Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament offers this change to a “no first use” policy – encouraging countries to make an initial statement to this effect – “the sole purpose of the possession of nuclear weapons is to deter the use of such weapons – “
This kind of stuff from world leaders shows us, as does Copenhagen, that we really can’t expect much sense from them. Let’s not feel too unkindly about well-meaning individuals such as Obama Barack, and Australia’s Kevin Rudd. They are, as Ralph Nader explained recently – “corporate prisoners”

France to boost its nuke industry, seeks foreign investors
France seeks foreign cash to grow nuclear sector
PARIS, Dec 14 (Reuters) By Nina Sovich – France pledged 1 billion euros ($1.5 billion) to support next generation reactor design and said it would seek foreign capital to back its move to the forefront of nuclear energy expansion.
The investment is part of a 35 billion-euro spending plan French President Nicolas Sarkozy Sarkozy unveiled on Monday aimed at improving France’s competitiveness. ………………. The French government, which owns majority stakes in both nuclear reactor maker Areva (CEPFi.PA) and utility giant EDF (EDF.PA), is trying to position France as the market leader in designing and running these power plants…………… To fund these costs, the French government recently asked Areva to sell its electricity business for some 4 billion euros. It has also invited foreign utilities to take stakes in new plants being built in France…………………..
Last month Proglio blasted French energy companies bidding on a contract to build nuclear power plants in Abu Dhabi for its lack of coherence.
