Activists hold rally to oppose revival of mothballed nuke plant
abs-cbnNEWS.com | 02/22/2009

Hundreds of protesters urged legislators on Sunday not to support a bill in Congress to revive the mothballed Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP).

Volunteers of environmental activist group Greenpeace and members of a network opposed to the BNPP also formed a human banner at the UP sunken garden forming the words – “NO TO BNPP.”

They called on members of the House of Representatives who indicated their support to the bill to withdraw their signatures and ensure it does not get past the House Committee on Appropriations……………………Protesters said reviving BNPP is not the answer to the country’s energy problem, adding neither will it solve climate change. Instead, they said government should expand the country’s renewable-energy capacity and promote energy-efficient technology.

Members of the Network Opposed to the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant revival also held a rally in front of UP Diliman’s Quezon Hall to call attention to the surcharge that would be imposed on power consumers if the bill is passed.

The group also called for the junking of House Bill (HB) 4631 which proposes the recommissioning of the BNPP. The group also said the BNPP revival will not address the expected energy crisis. They urged government to turn to indigenous energy sources instead.

Florida Green Party Files Petition Opposing New Nuclear Power Plant

Florida Green Party Files Petition Opposing New Nuclear Power PlantF Green Party Watch February 20th, 2009 by Ronald Hardy “……………………..

Gainesville, FL — On February 6, 2009 the Green Party of Florida (GPF, http://www.floridagreens.org) joined with the Nuclear Information and Resource Service (NIRS, http://www.nirs.org) and the Ecology Party to file a legal challenge to a new nuclear power plant proposed by Progress Energy Florida (PEF) for a site in Levy County, near Inglis, Florida.

The filing is a formal Petition to Intervene in the NRC’s licensing process for nuclear power plants, the latest in a series of such actions taken by NIRS and other groups nationwide to protect the health and safety of the public and the natural resources that are placed at risk by this industry. The interventions by parties with standing, which must follow rules established by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), are intended to stop these nuclear boondoggles before construction work starts and millions of dollars are wasted.

Kill Yucca, then get going on the rest of our problems

Kill Yucca, then get going on the rest of our problemsBy Brian Greenspun Las Vegas Sun, Feb 22, 2009 (2 a.m.)President Barack Obama says the Yucca Mountain project is dead.Nevada’s senior U.S. senator, Majority Leader Harry Reid, says the high-level nuclear waste dump is dead.

The nation’s nuclear power players — the folks who want to bury their problems in our back yard — aren’t saying it is dead, but they are acting as if it is in a coma and on its last legs.

And the majority of voters in Nevada — the people who put their trust in the president’s promise to kill their worst nightmare and helped elect him in November — believe the nation’s proposed high-level waste dump won’t happen.

So, given all that, why are Gov. Jim Gibbons and his champion, Nevada GOP Chairman Sue Lowden, doing all they can to breathe life into the moribund dump, thereby threatening countless thousands of Nevadans, their kids and those not yet born?……………………. the people of Nevada say they oppose the dump but remain oblivious to the subterfuge and incompetence that surround them.

What does all that mean? It means Yucca is not dead. Not even close. As long as we tolerate our own politicians sending mixed signals at best and clear signals of capitulation at worst, we will get that dump.

We are in the second generation of Nevadans fighting against the Goliath of the federal government and its multibillion-dollar friends in the power companies who care not about us but only about the almighty dollars they can make by turning us into a glowing, radiating, deadly dump. We are closer to winning than we have ever been. Now is not the time to let the little minds among us prevail.

Now is the time to do something. What we should not do, though, is tolerate for one moment longer those among us who would sell us out.

Nuke site seeks world heritage status

Herald Sun February 20, 2009

BIKINI Atoll, the site of the United States’ largest hydrogen bomb test and the place that lends its name to the skimpy two-piece swimsuit, is seeking recognition as a world heritage site.

“Nuclear bomb tests at Bikini Atoll shaped the history of the people of Bikini, the history of the Marshall Islands and the history of the entire world,” according to the Bikini proposal released today.

The 86-page document, to be presented to UNESCO’s World Heritage program, has been drawn up by Bikini liaison official Jack Niedenthal and Australian-based consultant Nicole Baker. A world heritage nomination involves a multi-level review and a decision is unlikely to be made before June next year, Ms Baker said…………………………”There are only a few 20th century sites, few are in the Pacific and few have confronting values,” she said, referring to Bikini’s status as a nuclear test ground zero as “nuclear colonialism”.

DAILY NATION – Unep conference: Nuclear energy not green, say NGOs

Unep conference: Nuclear energy not green, say Non Government Orgainisations

DAILY NATION (Kenya) By DAVE OPIYO , February 18 2009

A group of foreign non-governmental organisations on Wednesday caused a stir at the Unep headquarters when their representatives protested at the inclusion of nuclear power as “green energy”.

They urged delegates attending the ongoing Global Environment Ministers’ Conference in Gigiri, Nairobi, to keep nuclear power “out of the Clean Development Mechanism”. The NGOs said that this form of energy should not be allowed because it had severe health effects.

Kyoto Protocol

Clean Development Mechanism is under the Kyoto Protocol and allows industrialised countries with a greenhouse gas reduction commitment to invest in projects that reduce emissions in developing countries as an alternative to more expensive emission reductions in their own countries.

The demonstrators’ plea comes ahead of a meeting of world governments to decide whether this form of energy is eligible as clean. Mrs Kaisha Atakhanova, the chair of the Eco-Forum (Kazakhstan) said that her country had had Soviet nuclear activity for over 50 years.

“Grandchildren of women who were exposed to radiation have severe defects, worse than the generation that was directly exposed,” she said.

Her sentiments were echoed by Mrs Sabine Bock, the director of Women in Europe for a Common Future, who, quoting previous studies, said: “Even a four-fold expansion of nuclear power by 2050 would provide only marginal reductions in green house gas emissions.”

UK nuclear policy ‘insane’

UK nuclear policy ‘insane’ politics , Feb 2009

By politics.co.uk staff

The government has been accused of its left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing over its ‘contradictory’ attitudes towards nuclear disarmament.

The foreign secretary has unveiled the steps that need to be taken for the world to move towards a nuclear weapon-free future…………………….Until the government puts plans to replace Trident on hold, anything they say about ridding the world of nuclear weapons is severely undermined,” said the Greenpeace’s executive director John Sauven.

Kate Hudson, chair of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, said Mr Miliband’s speech, which accompanied a policy information paper from the Foreign Office was a “great disappointment”, which treated Trident as the elephant in the room.

And the Liberal Democrats said the government’s leadership on non-proliferation was threatened by the “premature and provocative” decision to renew Trident ahead of the global disarmament conference next year.

Russia won’t toughen policy on Iran

Russia won’t toughen policy on Iran

MOSCOW (AP) — Russia does not intend to toughen its policy toward Iran regarding its nuclear program, a senior Russian diplomat said Monday.

Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said it’s necessary to intensify international efforts to reach a political settlement of the Iranian nuclear standoff. But Ryabkov added that Russia has no intention to take a harsher attitude to Iran, Russian news agencies reported.

“Our stance on the Iranian nuclear program has no elements which could be interpreted as toughening of approach,” Ryabkov was quoted as saying.

The U.S. has accused Iran of supporting terrorism and secretly seeking to build nuclear weapons — charges that Iran denies.

Russia has developed close ties with Iran and is building its first nuclear power plant. Moscow has supported limited U.N. sanctions on Iran, but opposed the U.S. push for tougher measures…………………..

Ryabkov said Monday that ending the Iranian nuclear standoff could also help advance U.S.-Russian talks on possible cooperation on missile defense.

“As soon as there is a shift toward restoring confidence in the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program, opportunities will open for deeper talk on prospects for cooperation on missile defense,” Ryabkov said. “We are studying signals from the U.S. administration, and, for our part, have made proposals on how we can cooperate in the missile defense field.”

Greece announces nuclear moratorium

Greece announces nuclear moratorium – edie.net by Sam Bond 11 Feb 09 “……………..environmental campaigners are claiming victory after Greek development minister Kostis Hatzidakis ruled out future investment in nuclear and, perhaps more importantly, coal-fired power plants.

WWF Greece was part of a coalition that has been fighting a ‘no to coal’ campaign amid a will-they-won’t-they saga over government backing for coal plants and rumours that the ruling administration planned to introduce nuclear power to the country’s energy mix.

Demetres Karavellas, chief executive of the NGO, said: “We feel that our efforts to prove that Greece does not need coal power plants and nuclear energy have been justified. Today, we can be more optimistic that Greece might make the necessary shift towards a more sustainable and competitive green economy.”

The government change of stance on the issue was signalled by legislative changes to streamline and assist investment in renewable energy and by Mr Hatzidakis emerging from a cabinet meeting in late January to say “We want 2009 to be the year of renewable energy sources .”

Signature drive launched vs nuke plant reviva lMARK MERUEÑAS, GMANews.TV 11 Feb 09  MANILA, Philippines – A group of environmentalists, scientists, and church leaders on Wednesday launched a signature drive against the revival of the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP), saying it would only usher in further corruption in government.

The Network Opposed to the BNPP Revival (NO to BNPP Revival) succeeded in tagging along several personalities like former Vice President Teofisto Guingona Jr. and Sen. Ma. Consuelo “Jamby” Madrigal to join the cause.

In a press conference in Quezon City, the network – composed of at least 40 organizations – urged the public to oppose the resurrection of the BNPP, which the group said was a “dangerous and expensive demon of the past.”

Should atomic energy be part of the Obama plan?

OpEd News 9 Feb 09
Should atomic energy be part of the Obama plan? A coalition of environmentalists state that nuclear power has no place in the economic stimulous bill. However, in Obama’s bill much will be spent on nuclear power. Some of the main arguments such energy include that (1) no new reactor could go online for over a decade and (2) they often have cost over runs. Moreover, (3) waste is still a problem and (4) and reusing after reprocessing nuclear waste is still a pie-in-the sky dangerous technology. On the other hand, those for other alternative energy powerplants being more supported the stimulus bill include: (1) the wind, tidal, solar and other new technologies don’t cause nuclear fallout if attacked by terrorists or an accident, (2) essentially only socialist countries, like France, can hide the overall costs of nuclear production, i.e. cost overruns–and Americans don’t want to have socialist owned energy firms and nuclear fall-out damage insurance.Check out the rambunction debate on this website on the topic by a former Greenpeace member turned nuclear lobbyist and an environmental journalist.

Many Oppose Uranium Jobs|

Many Oppose Uranium Jobs
ABC 13 (video) 02/09/09 reporter: Sarah Bloom producer: Amy Fosterfolks are worried about the side effects. Virginia Uranium Incorporated is pumping the economic benefits, in the form of 300 to 500 jobs, with starting salaries of $65,000 to $70,000. With having a job almost a luxury these days, news of hundreds of possible openings is eye opening……………………………But that enthusiasm is terrifying to people like Eloise Nenon.  She’s spent hours fighting the mining industry. Eloise Nenon, Against Mining – “In areas where they have uranium mining you have horrendous birth defects, you have rampant lung cancer, and many other physical problems.”………………Breathing puts your health at a price right now, so it’s we’ve got to decide what’s more important.” For Nenon, and others opposed to mining, that’s a frightening realization. Israel’s war referendum

Israel’s war referendum The Washington Times  February 9, 2009 – “……………….Many Israelis now believe the country no longer has the option of making this election a contest over who will better redistribute the wealth and expand the welfare state. Instead, it has become a referendum on who will best handle the challenges posed by Iran and its proxies………………………….The understandable perception that Israel has lost a significant portion of its deterrent capability has politically benefited Benjamin Netanyahu, leader of the hawkish opposition Likud Party and current front-runner……………………… All of the major parties in Israel agree that Iran should not be permitted to develop nuclear weapons……………………….During the Bush administration’s final months in office, Washington rebuffed Mr. Olmert’s request for bunker-buster weapons that could be used to destroy hardened Iranian nuclear facilities buried underground, and it would not allow Israel to fly over Iraq to get to Iran. If Mr. Netanyahu wins on Tuesday, what will Mr. Obama say if Netanyahu requests bunker-busters? And if the American president says no, would Netanyahu – with a proverbial Iranian knife at his nation’s throat – decide to go it alone in attacking Iranian nuclear and missile targets?

Black Fox protest killed nuclear power plant

Black Fox protest killed power plant The Norman Transcript By M. Scott Carter Feb 08 2009 Mention “Black Fox” in Oklahoma and most people won’t think of a little animal. Instead they’ll talk about the how an eastern Oklahoma grandmother derailed a nuclear power plant……………………………

In an effort to stop the plant, Carrie Barefoot Dickerson and Citizens’ Action for Safe Energy began a decade-long protest and legal battle which eventually forced PSO to abandon its plans to build the plant.

According to the group, the Black Fox plant was the only nuclear power plant in the United States to be canceled by a combination of legal and citizen action after construction had started. Since then, no nuclear plant has been built in Oklahoma.

After the protest, Dickerson founded the Carrie Dickerson Foundation, a nonprofit group designed to educate people about the ills of nuclear energy.

Sweden lifts ban on nuclear power

Sweden lifts ban on nuclear power

Guardian.co.uk by Terry Macalister 5 February 2009
Environmentalists opposed to nuclear power said the decision in Sweden was one taken by a small majority in parliament and did not represent a significant swing back to favour for atomic power.

“No way can this be seen as a ringing endorsement given the parties concerned only hold 180 of 349 seats. The largest party in Sweden is still against nuclear and the people are not enamoured by it either,” said Jean McSorley, a senior nuclear adviser at Greenpeace.
McSorley believed the construction of an new nuclear plants would be hampered by the long lead times and huge expense at a time when the global recession means money is in short supply.
“There are very long lead times for new nuclear plants giving plenty of time for faults to emerge,” she explained, noting that the Finnish reactor, Olkiluoto 3 currently under construction, has already fallen behind schedule and is over cost……………
………Swedish ministers also outlined plans to lift the proportion of renewable energy consumption to 50% of the total. In the transport sector alone, the target was set at 10% and Sweden has become a major importer of sugar-based ethanol from Brazil. Sweden already gets much of its power from hydroelectric and biomass schemes.

Six Powers Hold Iran Talks as U.S. Mulls Policy

By Tony Czuczka

Feb. 4 (Bloomberg) — Diplomats from six nations discussed how to keep Iran from building nuclear weapons in the first meeting on the issue since President Barack Obama took office and offered Iran talks “without preconditions.”

U.S. Under Secretary for Political Affairs William Burns and foreign ministry officials from China, Russia, France, Britain and Germany met today in Wiesbaden, Germany, near Frankfurt, to review their strategy toward Iran, a German Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said

Iran said yesterday it launched its first domestically made satellite, prompting U.S., French and British statements of concern about Iran’s efforts to develop ballistic missile technology. Leaders of Germany and France said they may back new sanctions if diplomacy fails to halt “the Iranian threat.”

“We will not permit an Iranian nuclear bomb because this would threaten world peace,” German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy said in a joint article published today in the Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper. “We favor a diplomatic solution.”

Obama has shifted U.S. policy since taking office on Jan. 20, saying he supports “tough and direct diplomacy with Iran without preconditions” and will “use the power of American diplomacy to pressure Iran to stop their illicit nuclear program, support for terrorism and threats toward Israel.”………………..

Iran, the second-largest oil producer in the Middle East, is under three sets of UN sanctions after the International Atomic Energy Agency, the UN nuclear watchdog, sent the dispute to the Security Council in March 2006.

The Bush administration ruled out talks with Iran unless the country ended uranium enrichment work within its nuclear program.
