Europe’s ‘supergrid’ paves way for baseload renewable energy

Getting connected: Europe’s green energy ‘supergrid ‘By Matt Ford, for CNNJ anuary 31, 2010 It is a criticism frequently leveled at those promoting wind or solar power as an alternative to fossil fuels: what happens when the wind doesn’t blow or the sun doesn’t shine?Well, now there is a smart answer, at least in Europe — we’ll simply and instantly switch to another source of clean, green power. Obama panders to nuclear lobby, loses credibility with his supporters

Demoralizing his Supporters, Obama calls Nukes, Coal and Oil Drilling “Clean Energy Jobs”  Think Progress, by Brad Johnson 9 Jan 2010 President Barack Obama’s discussion of energy policy in his first State of the Union address pandered to corporate interests while demoralizing his progressive supporters. Though Obama made a strong case that real investments in clean energy such as solar technology, advanced batteries, high-speed rail and efficiency are critical to job creation and international competitiveness, he also offered sops to established corporate polluters.

Republicans, who spent much of the address refusing to applaud Obama’s call for economic reforms, ecstatically applauded his praise of polluting industry. Embracing the language of the John McCain campaign, Obama described nuclear power, offshore oil and gas drilling, and coal as “clean energy jobs”: – (” a new generation of safe, clean nuclear power plants in this country”)………Obama’s actual supporters were dismayed. Nuclear industry will produce increasing C02 emissions

Stop oldbury: Response to Consultation on Nuclear National Policy Statement,  Philip Booth 23 Jan 2010 “……….Electricity Produced by Nuclear Power (NP) is not CO2 free. “The use of nuclear power causes, at the end of the road and under the most favourable conditions, approximately one-third as much CO2-emission as gas-fired electricity production. The rich uranium ores required to achieve this reduction are, however, so limited that if the entire present world electricity demand were to be provided by nuclear power, these ores would be exhausted within four years. Use of the remaining poorer ores in nuclear reactors would produce more CO2 emission than burning fossil fuels directly.” (ref: http://www.oprit.rug.nl/deenen)

Nuclear’s hidden costs, while renewable energy is feasible

Research that is reviewed in the November issue of Scientific American shows that renewables can meet 100 per cent of the world’s energy needs (not just electricity) and that it is technically feasible to do it by 2030.

(USA) Subsidies disguise the real cost of nuclear power FT.com January 12 2010   Dr Gerry Wolff. The real cost of nuclear power is disguised by several subsidies. Without those subsidies, the price of nuclear electricity would rise to a level that would make it deeply unattractive to investors. Continue reading

USA’s renewable energy future

Perhaps the biggest impediment for the US – and indeed for Australia – comes in reversing many of the subsidies for fossil fuels that are infused throughout the tax system and getting politicians to impose a cost on carbon emissions.

Big powers caused poor Copenhagen result

Under the Copenhagen Accord, temperatures are likely to rise by nearly 4° C, aggravating climate change, wiping out small island countries and reducing billions of people to an insecure existence as sea levels inexorably rise, wind patterns abruptly change and glaciers rapidly melt, increasing hunger, displacement and devastation.

The cost of tailing the US  DNA Praful Bidwai  January 5, 2010 The outcome of the Copenhagen climate conference has been seen by many analysts as signifying a major shift in the global distribution of power. There is clearly some merit in this assessment. This is the first time that the Western bloc led by the United States split so completely on a non-military issue of great global significance.
