UK Urged to Keep Two Astute-Class Nuclear-Powered Attack Submarines on Continuous Patrol.

Britain could strengthen its North
Atlantic defences by keeping two Astute-class nuclear-powered attack
submarines continuously operational, according to a proposal published by
the 878 Institute in October 2026. The plan would maintain one submarine on
patrol in strategic waters, including the Greenland-Iceland-UK (GIUK) Gap
and North Sea, while a second would help protect Britain’s nuclear
deterrent submarines, strengthening the Royal Navy’s ability to counter
Russian underwater threats, safeguard critical maritime routes, and
reinforce NATO’s security across the North Atlantic.
