Nuclear material theft from Dounreay was scenario for emergency response exercise on A9

The attempted theft of nuclear material in Caithness was the background to
a simulated exercise to test the response of emergency services. The major
incident exercise closed the A9 for several hours around Georgemas
Junction, and trains on the far north line were unable to stop at the
location. Months of planning by the Civil Nuclear Constabulary’s
(CNC’s) exercise and resilience team and their colleagues at NRS Dounreay
went into the simulation on September 23. Dounreay has now released details
of the “Regulatory Evaluation Demonstration Exercise”, which involved
and tested multiple agencies and their response to an attack by adversaries
intent on stealing nuclear material. In the scenario, a lorry transporting
a flask of nuclear material from Dounreay power station for onward
transport by rail from Georgemas Junction train station, was held up by a
deliberate car crash and attacked by armed offenders.
