Scottish Greens co-leader issues warning ahead of nuclear vote
A SCOTTISH Greens co-leader has said she firmly opposes a key party motion which
would, if passed, change party policy to support new nuclear power in
Scotland.
Scottish Greens members are set to debate the controversial
motion at their party conference in Inverness this weekend. It comes after
the Green Party of England and Wales (GPEW) – which is separate from the
Scottish Greens – voted to drop their opposition to nuclear power.

The Scots motion supports the construction of nuclear plants in Scotland on the
condition that certain criteria are met, such as being “passively safe and
do not produce large quantities of nuclear waste”.
Speaking to The National
ahead of the party’s conference, co-leader Gillian Mackay said she would be
surprised if the motion passed a members’ vote. “It’s up to my members as
to whether it’ll pass or not. I certainly don’t think it should,” she said.
She added: “[Nuclear power] is hugely expensive, takes an age to build,
it’s not clean energy like renewables, there’s waste to be disposed of. “We
see here in the Highlands with Dounreay actually how long it takes to
decommission these plants as well, it’s the full life cycle of it.” “So
certainly, I won’t be supporting it,” she went on. “I’d be surprised if
members did vote for it, in all honesty.”
