Scottish Greens set to vote on whether to support new nuclear power

THE Scottish Greens are set to vote on whether to support new nuclear power
at their upcoming party conference. The Greens will meet in Inverness this
weekend for their autumn conference, where they will debate a motion
supporting the construction of new nuclear plants provided certain
conditions are met.

The English and Welsh Greens voted to drop their
opposition to nuclear power earlier this month. The party has long opposed
the construction of new nuclear power stations in Scotland, describing it
as “outrageously expensive”, “unnecessary”, and arguing that it detracts
from renewable energy.

In 2022, co-leader Ross Greer – then the party’s
finance spokesperson – said: “Proposing new nuclear power stations as a
solution to today’s energy crisis is like thinking the solution to your
house being on fire right now is the construction of a billion pound fire
station in twenty years’ time.”
