Jeffrey Sachs: Europe Must Break With Washington’s March to War
Joshua Scheer, October 17, 2026
Europe’s leaders are gambling with their people’s future—and, Jeffrey Sachs warns, with the survival of the world. Speaking to members of the European Parliament, the economist delivers a blistering indictment of American foreign policy and Europe’s willingness to follow Washington into confrontation with nuclear powers.
Drawing on decades of advising governments, Sachs argues that NATO expansion and the pursuit of American dominance helped squander the promise of peace after the Cold War. From Ukraine to Iran and Gaza, he challenges Western claims to moral leadership and demands a return to diplomacy. Europe, he insists, must find its own voice, negotiate directly with Russia and build relationships with China and the wider world around cooperation rather than war.
