Donald Trump says that South Korea will invest $200 billion in U.S. energy projects
Donald Trump unveiled plans on Wednesday for South Korea to invest $200bn
in US energy initiatives, including a long-delayed liquefied natural gas
project in Alaska, eight nuclear power plants and a six-gigawatt power
facility in Texas. The investment pledges form part of a $350bn strategic
investment package agreed last year by Seoul under a trade deal struck in
exchange for reduced US tariffs.
Trump said the measures would be a
“major step toward securing our critical energy supply chain, ensuring
American energy dominance and making our partnership with South Korea, and
the entire Pacific region, stronger than ever before”. The investment
pledge would also support construction of eight nuclear power plants in
Ohio, Tennessee, South Carolina and Kentucky, Lutnick said.
Trump said six
of the reactors would be built by US nuclear group Westingthouse, and two
by a Korean company. But analysts cautioned that nuclear power station
construction was a long-term commitment that could take decades and was
prone to cost overruns. A deal announced by the Trump administration with
Westinghouse to fund construction of 10 reactors with money provided by the
Japanese government has seen little progress.
