Heatwave and nuclear power: Water under high voltage
Greenpeace Switzerland, September 28, 2026, https://www.greenpeace.ch/de/publikation/135749/hitzewelle-und-atomkraft-wasser-unter-hochspannung/
Nuclear power plants require enormous quantities of water to cool their reactors. The Gösgen and Leibstadt nuclear power plants consume over 35 million cubic meters of water
from the Aare and Rhine rivers annually. This is more water than agriculture needs to irrigate its fields in a dry summer. This is shown in the new Greenpeace report “Heatwave and Nuclear Power: Water Under High Voltage.” New nuclear power plants would also be dependent on very large amounts of water.
