Examining the inaccurate story of the new ‘nuclear arms race’
So much for the new ‘nuclear arms race’ http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/so-much-the-new-nuclear-arms-race
The announcement is the biggest single success in President Obama’s five-year-long push to secure the world’s most dangerous materials, and will come as world leaders gather here on Monday for a nuclear security summit meeting. Since Mr. Obama began the meetings with world leaders – this will be the third – 13 nations have eliminated their caches of nuclear materials and scores more have hardened security at their storage facilities to prevent theft by potential terrorists.
For years these stores of weapons-grade material were not a secret, but were lightly guarded at best; a reporter for The New York Times who visited the main storage site at Tokaimura in the early 1990s found unarmed guards and a site less-well protected than many banks. While security has improved, the stores have long been considered vulnerable.
Germany and Italy: solar energy now a mainstream power source
Solar joins the mainstream in Italy and Germanyhttp://www.businessspectator.com.au/article/2014/3/25/energy-markets/solar-joins-mainstream-italy-and-germany?utm_source=exact&utm_medium=email&utm_content=622014&utm
The LCOE of any source of power – solar, natural gas, coal, wind, etc — accounts for everything that goes into determining that electricity’s cost: installation, maintenance, investment, the electricity itself, depreciation, and so forth. The goal is to give a more complete picture of each power source’s economic position vis-a-vis its rivals. According to Eclareon’s analysis, solar’s LCOE in Italy and Germany is now at ‘grid parity’, meaning it’s even with retail electricity prices in general in those countries. Spain’s already gotten there as well, and Mexico and France are coming up.
Solar’s LCOE actually dropped significantly from 2012 to 213 in every country but Germany – between 20 and 25 per cent. Even Germany saw a drop of just over 10 per cent. But these drops don’t always translate into grid parity (the Y axis in the graph), since the prices of other sources are always moving as well.
The analysis also looked at the level of regulatory support solar enjoys in each country. (The X axis.) This does not mean subsidies. Right now, regulatory law in both European countries and the states isn’t set up to handle a world in which electricity consumers also generate and sell their own electricity. Sometimes there are added fees for people who generate their own solar power, sometimes they aren’t legally allowed to sell their excess power back to the grid, and sometimes laws can rocket back and forth from solar-friendly to solar-unfriendly in short order. As a result, meaningful market competition between solar power and other forms of electricity is really hard to come by, even when their respective prices have pulled alongside one another.
None of the countries have an ideal circumstance. But some – those in the top right-hand quadrant – get closer to a world in which electricity is generated not just by a small number of really big suppliers, but by lots and lots of little suppliers as well, and everyone can buy and sell electricity to everyone else as they see fit.
Ukraine is well off to have got rid of its nuclear weapons
Ukraine and Nuclear Weapons
Some have suggested that if Ukraine had retained their nuclear weapons, Russia would not have invaded and captured Crimea. This is absurd. There is no evidence that nuclear weapons have ever deterred an invasion or won a war. …….
Suggestions that Ukraine has become more vulnerable because it gave up nuclear weapons are support for nuclear proliferation. Does this mean that every nation needs to have nuclear weapons to prevent invasion? Putin did not invade Belarus or Kazakhstan, and they have no nuclear weapons. Rather than re-arming nations, we have to go the other way to make the world safe for ourselves and future generations…….
Immediate American and Russian reductions to the same nuclear arsenal sizes of the other nuclear nations, about 200 weapons each, would maintain the nuclear deterrence of each and prevent nuclear winter from ever happening. Nuclear abolition will prevent nuclear famine, the horrendous consequences on food of even a “small” nuclear war using less than 1 percent of the current global arsenal. Nuclear weapons are already stigmatized, and no sane person would consider using them. As we move toward their reduction and elimination, we will not prevent all human conflict, but we will lessen their potential horrific consequences.http://www.huffingtonpost.com/alan-robock/ukraine-and-nuclear-weapo_b_5014360.html
China warns about Japan’s dangerous nuclear ambitions
..Be wary of Japan’s nuclear ambitions
(People’s Daily Online) 10:……55, March
24, 2014 It is indisputable that Japan holds a large amount of
weapons-grade nuclear materials; thisshould be a matter of concern to
the international community.
Yun Byung-se, Minister of Foreign Affairs of South Korea, emphasized that
if a countyholds or produces more nuclear materials than it
actually needs there is always a risk thatit will become a threat
to itself and to other countries. Meanwhile John Kerry,
U.S.Secretary of State, also said that preventing Japan from
developing nuclear weapons is oneof the key points of American
diplomacy.
Facing such pressure from the international community, Japan
has participated ininternational nuclear affairs in apparent
good faith. But according to a report from KyodoNews Agency,
the draft of the statement which will be released after the
non proliferationand disarmament initiative meeting in Hiroshima
next month may demand that China and some other countries join in
the arms control negotiations between the US and Russia.
China strictly abides by its commitment to no first use of
nuclear weapons at any time andin any circumstances, and commits
not to use or threaten to use nuclear weapons against nuclear weapon-free countries and in nuclear weapon-free zones.
..
Japan has always assumed an ambiguous attitude towards nuclear
weapons issues. Asearly as 1957, the then Japanese premier
Nobusuke Kishi asserted that Japan would not
exclude the possibility of owning nuclear weapons for self-defense purposes. And whenKishi’s brother Satō Eisaku was
elected Japanese premier, though he announced the ThreeNon-Nuclear Principles, in private he claimed that these principles
were simply “windowressing”. For decades, Japan has purpose ly maintained itself
“a screwdriver’s distance”from making nuclear warheads.What is
the purpose of Japan’s large stocks of weapon-grade nuclear materials? Japanmust come clean, and remove any
doubts of the part of the international community bypractical
actions.

Florida’s sorry story of ratepayers stung by upfront nuclear construction costs

Yes, who would ever guess that any BIG Utility/Corp. like FP&L who I’m sure pledges using many fancy words, that it puts the health, safety and well being of all their ratepayers FIRST, would even consider making any changes that are not in their ratepayers best interests?
I’m specifically speaking about any changes specifically designed to increase their own profitability, which would violate the sacred trust that exists between themselves and the ratepayers they serve.
FP&L’s Top Management would never allow this to happen because if it did, it would mean that FP&L is in reality, putting their shareholders welfare far ahead of their ratepayers, and we all know they would never want to be caught doing that…

Nuclear power project financing option sticks ratepayers with tab, Indy Star
By John Russell, john.russell@indystar.com February 1, 2014
“……..the Florida legislature passed a CWIP bill, allowing utilities to charge ratepayers up front for construction costs of nuclear power plants. Supporters said it was a way to get nuclear plants built faster and cheaper. Opponents called the bill “crony capitalism,” saying it would shift the risk of start-up costs onto ratepayers in the form of higher utility bills, while utility investors would reap the profits.
Two years later, the new Florida law got a taker. Progress Energy filed an application to build a nuclear plant in central Florida, estimating it would cost $5 billion. But over the next few years, the price tag climbed to more than $20 billion, due to delays and larger-than-expected costs. Then things got complicated. In 2010, Florida utility regulators rejected Progress’s request for $368 million in…

Japanese government covers up TEPCO workers deaths and intimidates journalists who speak out! – Mako Oshidori
http://nsnbc.me/2014/03/21/exposed-death-of-fukushima-workers-covered-up-by-tepco-and-government/
Fri, Mar 21st, 2014
nsnbc : The death of many Fukushima workers who die from radiation exposure is covered-up by Fukushima Daiichi power plant operator TEPCO and the Japanese government, said a Japanese journalist who investigated the unreported deaths, adding that she found a TEPCO memo instructing officials to “cut her questions short appropriately”, and that police is following her around in an intimidating manner.

The alarming disclosure came at an international conference on the “Effects of Nuclear Disasters on Natural Environment and Human Health” outside the German financial capital Frankfurt. The conference was co-organized by the German chapter of International Physicians for Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW) and the Protestant Church in Hesse Nassau, on March 6, 2014, reports Energy News.
Mako Oshidori, a Japanese freelance journalist and commedian, who was present at the conference and the subsequent press conference (recorded on video). Mako reported that she discovered a TEPCO memo, in which the Fukushima Daiichi operator TEPCO instructs officials to “cut Mako-chan’s (questions) short, appropriately”. Mako Oshidori was enrolled in the School of Life Sciences at Tottori University Faculty of Medicine for three years.
Mako revealed that TEPCO and the government cover-up the death of Fukusjima workers and that government agents began following her around after she began investigating the cover-up. Mako said:
“I heard about it from researchers who were my friends as well as some government officials. I will show you a photo I secretly took of the agent, so you know what kind of surveillance I mean. When I would talk to someone, a surveillance agent from the central government’s public police force would come very close, trying to eavesdrop on the conversation….
“I would like to talk about my interview of a nurse who used to work at (the) Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant (NPP) after the accident. .. He was a nurse at Fukushima Daiichi NPP in 2012. He quit his job with TEPCO in 2013, and that’s when I interviewed him. …
“As of now of now, there are multiple NPP workers who have died, but only the ones who died on the job are reported publicly. Some of them have died suddenly while off work, for instance, during the weekend or in their sleep, but none of their deaths are reported. …
“Not only that, they are not included in the worker death count. For example, there are some workers who quit the job after a lot of radiation exposure, such as 50, 60 to 70 mili Sieverts, and end up dying a month later, but none of these deaths are either reported, or included in the death toll. This is the reality of the NPP workers”.
Mako Oshidori’s shocking revelation at the IPPNW press conference substantiates previous reports about TEPCO’s criminal disregard for safety and human lives.
In October 2013, Michel Chossudovsky, the director of the Canada based Centre for Research on Globalisation, reported that the coordination of the multibillion dollar Fukushima decontamination operation relies on Japan’s organized crime, the Yakusa, which is actively involved in the recruitment of “specialized” personnel for dangerous tasks.
One of the most important special qualifications for employment at the Fukushima Daiichi NPP is, according to many other reports, is to be stricken by unemployment and poverty, and in a situation where one has little other choice than to take an under-paid, high-risk job.
In late 2013, the Japanese parliament adopted new legislation to penalize the unauthorized publication of information about the crippled nuclear power plant with up to ten-years-long imprisonment. Mako Oshidori’s testimony about intimidating surveillance adds an alarming perspective to this legislation with regard to the freedom of press and the safety of Japanese journalists.

Fukushima Documentary 2014 HD – Pandora’s Promise Was A Lie
Published on 23 Mar 2014
This is version 2.1, the most current and up to date version. It’s been tightened up with some important new facts, plus enhanced audio & visuals!
Summary: Following the unprecedented triple meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant after Japan’s 3/11 earthquake and tsunami, a myriad of far reaching questions has arisen…
What’s the current state of the Fukushima nuclear reactors? How much radiation have they already released? What type of health impacts can we expect? Is our seafood supply safe? And what about the other 435 nuclear reactors around the world, 104 in the US alone – 22 of them the same exact design as those that exploded and melted down in Fukushima, are they safe?
Yet these are not easy questions to get answers to. The mainstream media and the internet are full of conflicting viewpoints & information. For example, UN scientists have already claimed that the health impacts of Fukushima will be negligible and statistically insignificant, which is parroted in CNN’s documentary “Pandora’s Promise”. However independent scientists tell a very different story; they project on the order of a million cancers within the next few decades in Japan alone.
So how does such a massive scientific discrepancy occur?
Nuclear Exodus explores the ties that inexorably bind the nuclear power industry to the military industrial complex, and how the lust for nuclear weapons causes governments to push nuclear power on their citizens, while covering up the true health effects of radiation exposure. It delves deep into the legacy & lessons of Chernobyl, nuclear waste management, nuclear terrorism, & solar flares which could potentially trigger hundreds of nuclear meltdowns across the world – threatening life on Earth as we know it.
But can human civilization truly generate the electricity it needs without nuclear power, especially while reducing our energy dependence on fossil fuels? How far have renewable technologies come in 2014 exactly? And if some cataclysmic disaster did threaten the world, would there be anyway to realistically protect life on Earth? Could Mars actually be a feasible back up planet anytime soon?
These questions and more are explored in great depth during Nuclear Exodus: Pandora’s Promise Was A Lie

nuclear-news.net hits 1 million views with a morning rant about Naughty Nuclear Norway!

Op-Ed arclight2011
Date 23 March 2014
posted to nuclear-news.net
Dear viewers
Nuclear-news has reached 1 million hits (1,ooo ooo ) after 7 years of hard work by Christina MacPhearson. So, I thought i should let you all know.
I have been wandering the annals of this site after a long stint at Enenews.com where I was able to discover the hidden world of the nuclear lobby. After being invited to join Christina in September 2012, I was able to put my knowledge to the test and research the nuclear industry and its connected industries (military, financial and political) further.
As well as the general research I came into contact with the pro nuclear blogging world where i began to understand the rifts within the nuclear industry such as problems with the ICRP radiation dose advice that is given to the public.
I also discovered the lengths and powers of the nuclear lobby to control the government and indeed this was commented on by the recently deceased UK MP Tony Benn who helped develop Atoms For Peace in the 1950`s. Tony Benn was nicely quoted as saying that the nuclear industry does not submit to government control but is an entity that is separate from government control and highly secretive. This shows the nuclear industry is not a very democratic friendly industry that has little transparency and shows signs of corruption with lax safety practices.
We give thanks to the many independent researchers and scientists for getting their findings and reports on line. This has meant that our understanding of the consequences of the nuclear meltdowns at Fukushima Daichi have been uncovered in a way that the consequences of Chernobyl were never uncovered .The events concerning the Fukushima nuclear disaster have been documented using many forms of multi media. And a humble and not so humble network of bloggers and news gatherers has been able to pass this information on to others. I believe this process has been very effective and is likely the reason that so much time and money is being spent on countering these truths.
A nice example of how the game is rigged is seen in Norway, where scientific research and findings were hidden or ignored so that the worst effects of the Fukushima nuclear disaster could be hidden. It began when NILU removed its radiation mapping system from public view whilst the connected thorium test nuclear reactor at Halden Norway was implicated with the nuclear military industry. In fact, this was deemed illegal in Norway as funding or supporting nuclear weapons manufacture will get you into court, and it indeed it did gt them into court!
Of course, Norway stepped forward to help the pro nuclear lobby out with another study showing little effect from Chernobyl in Norway with another recent report showing little effect on insects in Fukushima (which was reported in Norway) using only a computer model and ignoring actual field studies an reports with pictures and real data as reported even by the main stream media around the globe in 2012 (but little reported in Norway).
It might be said that a Norwegian Sovereign Fund Group only just recently pulled their investments out of TEPCO at a huge loss (not reported in Norway) followed by other european investors. So Norway had a vested interest to play down the Fukushima disaster with heavy financiers able to manipulate a public owned and paid for service like NILU. In 2012 Norway also helped to promote Japanese Sake. (reported in Norway)
UK – Peace campaigners arrested on board nuclear submarine – OOps!
PRESS RELEASE –
Two campaigners from Faslane Peace Camp were arrested on Wednesday morning aboard the Royal Navy submarine HMS Ambush at its berth in Faslane.
Security at the site – home to Britain’s Trident nuclear weapons and headquarters of the Royal Navy – was again called into question by the protestors’ actions.
Speaking today following her release from custody, boarding party member Heather Stewart (29) expressed surprise at the success of the action. ‘I am amazed and disturbed by the accessibility of the UK’s top defence site. Up to eighty nuclear warheads are often stationed here, along with several nuclear reactors. We thought we could get in, but not that we would be arrested within meters of nuclear materials.
HMS Ambush is one of the new Astute class of hunter-killer submarines. Two of a planned seven Astutes have been completed, with all seven intended to be based alongside the £100 billion Trident replacement at Faslane. The base is currently undertaking a £31 million expansion to accommodate the additional service personnel for these submarines.
‘These submarines use the same leaky reactor which has recently been disclosed to have caused problems at Dounreay. Bringing another five to Faslane will double the chances of nuclear accident and increase the amount of nuclear waste on our roads and railways,’ said Jamie Watson (29) on release from Dumbarton Sheriff Court.
Having been charged with bye-laws offences, malicious mischief, and offences under the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act, the protestors were allowed to leave custody with no trial date set. Stewart said, ‘Direct actions such as this are necessary, to reflect the overwhelming public support for scrapping Trident and to show that we won’t accept a Trident replacement or new nuclear submarines.
‘Since there’s nowhere else for them to go, a “Yes” vote in September will help pile on the pressure for these engines of destruction to be sent to the breaker’s yard as part of a programme of unilateral disarmament.’
NOTES FOR EDITORS
Faslane Peace Camp has been a base for anti-nuclear action for almost 32 years. Consisting of a line of caravans along the A814 opposite the submarine base, the Peace Camp calls to all opposed to war, militarism, and weapons of mass destruction to join us.
HM Naval Base Clyde is a number of sites on the Clyde, Gareloch, and Loch Long, in the West of Scotland near Helensburgh. The main sites are Faslane, which hosts the Vanguard submarines which carry Trident nuclear warheads on constant patrols of the Atlantic, and Coulport, which stores undeployed warheads. Nuclear waste from the sites is set to be moved following public consultation on a temporary disposal site this year.
Both the Vanguard and Astute submarines based at Faslane use the same type of reactor as HMS Vulcan, the test reactor at Dounreay. A leak detected at this reactor was not publicly disclosed for two years, despite a tenfold increase in radioactivity in the surrounding area and obvious implications for the UK submarine fleet. HMS Vanguard is now scheduled for refuelling in 2015 at an estimated cost of £120 million, with the remainder of the UK’s nuclear submarines likely to follow.

Mari is facing charges stemming from speaking out on radiation in Japan and advocacy for families relocating children out of the areas contaminated by radioactivity from the damaged Fukushima Daiichi reactor site, operated by TEPCO. Radioactivity continues to leave that site. It is well established that while lower levels of exposure to radioactivity lowers risk, the greatest hazard from radiation comes when children are exposed, raising the risk of cancer manifold over their entire lives.
The group ETHOS in Japan supports the decision by some to stay and live in contaminated areas. Sadly, some of these families feel they have no choice due to economics and other factors. Certainly young children have no choice. ETHOS advocates monitoring radioactivity, but well established science supports Mari’s views that there is no safe dose of radiation and that children need to be protected. We support open discussion, access to information and free choice. We ask the Prosecutor to agree that writing and speaking about these issues are not a crime.

Fukushima News 3/22/14:Radiation High in Fukushima Reservoirs Outside Evacuation Zones
Published on 22 Mar 2014
Radiation high in Fukushima reservoirs
State and local government officials say they have detected radioactive substances exceeding government safety limits in soil at the bottom of agricultural dams and reservoirs in Fukushima Prefecture.
The agriculture ministry and the Fukushima prefectural government found 8,000 becquerels or more per kilogram of radioactive substances in 568 out of the 1,940 dams and reservoirs they inspected between last June and December.
108 were in the evacuation zones around the Fukushima Daiichi power plant, and 460 were further away.
Officials detected 370,000 becquerels per kilogram in the soil of a reservoir 58 kilometers away from the plant.
It is the highest reading so far recorded outside the evacuation zones, and more than 46 times the government limit of 8,000 becquerels for radioactive waste.
The state government is obliged to dispose of radioactive waste beyond this limit.
Prefectural officials say rain may have carried radioactive substances into the waters from surrounding forests.
Water from the reservoir with the highest reading outside the evacuation zones is being used for rice paddies nearby. But officials say they have not found radiation levels exceeding food safety limits in locally-produced rice, probably because radioactive substances in the soil barely dissolve in water.
The head of an association of residents says officials have told them they will not be exposed to radiation as long as there is water in the reservoir.
But he says they fear radioactive levels may surge if it dries up. He is urging the state government to address the problem as soon as possible.
Fukushima residents wavering over radioactive wastes facilities:
Okuma Town is home to Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant. The town’s radiation levels are so high that much of it is designated as “no-entry zone”. The entire Koirino district is part of the proposed site for intermediate storage facilities. NHK asked the evacuees from this community whether they accepted this.
