Haiyan wrought havoc throughout the Philippines when
the storm began to gather steam on November 2, 2013. The storm quickly
expanded to well over 500 miles with sustained winds nearing 200 mph
and even higher gusts. The hurricane ripped through Albay
province just recently as unprecedented winds tore off roofs
and waves reached as high as 40 feet in some areas. Nearly 10,000
people are feared dead.
The Philippines put into place a National Disaster Risk Reduction
and Management Council to help prepare for natural disasters like Haiyan.
In late September, 2010, the Philippine Disaster Risk and Reduction
Management Act was promulgated to strengthen the disaster planning and

recovery capability in response to Typhoon Ondoy.  http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2013/08/hurricane-tracks/

Luckily, the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant was never fully activated. The Bataan

Nuclear Power Plant is 45 miles west of Manila  atop volcanic activity.
Bataan seemed destined to become the first operating nuclear plant
in Southeast Asia until the Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster. Then, the
Philippine government mothballed the nuclear power plant.
The NOAA Hurricane database shows that Haiyan is a huge storm on its
global radar. In fact, Haiyan may be the largest storm in recorded
history! An August, 1931 flood and tidal wave off the Huang He River
in China killed over 3 million people.
Currently, the International Red Cross is managing aid to the
Philippines along with other charitable groups and major
organizations like CARE. Typical disaster aid kits include
the following:
o water and food rations
o emergency lighting, blankets and clothing
o sleeping gear
o American Red Cross Kits
o evacuation and fire supplies
o trauma and first responder kits
o pet emergency kits

o water bottles and potassium iodine tabs for radiation protection

Probably, before deciding on this, we need to ask the question – Who stopped the BNPP from operating and Why? Who – it was Corazon Cojuangco Aquino then President. Why – Corruption? – Maybe. The unwritten answer is that this was one of the conditions for the Feb. 1986 Revolution supporters to support and install Cory. Aboitiz and the Lopezes of MERALCO were among the supporters. Aboitiz made a killing on the sale of Generators when there was a power crisis during and after Cory time. MERALCO built new Power Plants under its First Gen Corporation. Now, the President is Benigno Cojuangco Aquino. Who is benefitting from the brownouts in Mindanao? Aboitiz again. In Luzon, MERALCO dominated the whole of the power business. Now, Aboitiz is also in the northern part of the Philippines building Mini-hydros. So, do you think this administration will push for another power plant? Probably yes, if this will be privately owned so Aboitiz and Meralco can play again.

  2. The anti-nuclear movement in the Philippines aimed to stop the construction of nuclear power facilities and terminate the presence of American military bases, which were believed to house nuclear weapons on Philippine soil. Anti-nuclear demonstrations were led by groups such as the Nuclear-Free Philippines Coalition and No Nukes Philippines. A focal point for protests in the late 1970s and 1980s was the proposed Bataan Nuclear Power Plant, which was built but never operated. The project was criticised for being a potential threat to public health, especially since the plant was located in an earthquake zone.[1]

The demand of the anti-nuclear movement for the removal of military bases culminated in a 1991 Philippine Senate decision to stop extending the tenure of US facilities in the Philippines. Tons of toxic wastes were left behind after the US withdrawal and anti-nuclear and other groups worked to provide assistance for the bases’ cleanup.[1]
