VIDEO: danger of escalating crisis, with North Korea’s threats

see-this.wayVIDEO North Korea’s nuclear threats could lead to dangerous escalation of crisis, warns U.N. Secretary General Australian Broadcasting Corporation http://www.abc.net.au/lateline/content/2013/s3731193.htm Broadcast: 05/04/2013 Reporter: Emma Alberici

The U.N. Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon has warned that North Korea’s nuclear threats could lead to an escalation of the crisis on the Korean peninsula.

Transcript   EMMA ALBERICI, PRESENTER: The UN Secretary General has warned North Korea’s nuclear threats to lead to an escalation of the crisis on the Korean Peninsula.

Ban Ki Moon says he’s concerned the North’s rhetoric might cause a miscalculation on the part of South Korea.

North Korea watchers believe the rogue regime doesn’t want a full scale war, they argue that Pyongyang is working toward as a small scale military provocation similar to its sinking of a South Korean ship in 2010.

ANDREA BERGER, NUCLEAR WEAPONS ANALYST: The difference this time around will be that South Korea has already made very clear that it will respond in kind to any such provocation and will not tolerate a death of South Korean citizens.

EMMA ALBERICI: South Korea is closely watching its northern neighbour’s missile movements with reports an intermediate range rocket has been moved to a launch site in the country’s east which is closer to US bases in the Pacific.

The North Korean situation – a dangerous game for the West

Kim is simply too new and untested for us to know if he has the self-awareness to avoid inadvertently killing himself. But squeezing him into submission without the costs and casualties of a war will require China’s help

From China’s perspective, even if Kim is losing control of the situation, he has not lost it yet, and so China considers anything short of that to be alarmist. As long as North Korea is not threatening Beijing, this is a prisoners’ dilemma we will be facing on our own

North Korea rallyNORTH KOREA’S NUCLEAR GAME THEORY, New Yorker  BY , 5 April 13,  Foreign diplomats in Pyongyang are facing an absurd choice: Kim Jong-un’s government issued a formal diplomatic warning today that it would be “unable to guarantee the safety of embassies and international organizations in the country in the event of conflict from April 10.”

A few questions come to mind, including but not limited to: Any plans for April 11th that we might want to jot down? And: Is this warning an actual expression of concern, or a way of letting foreign embassies take on the role of ramping up Kim’s threats now that his own propaganda machine is getting diminishing returns? And lastly, and most fundamentally: How realistic is it to imagine a cascade of blunders that lead to a nuclear strike? Continue reading

Thyroid damage to US West Coast children, from Fukushima radiation

Decades after the accident, a 2011 study by the National Institutes of Health found that higher absorption of I-131 radiation led to an increased risk for thyroid cancer among victims of Chernobyl radiation – a risk that has not diminished over time.

The children who were unfortunate enough to be exposed to Fukushima radiation on the US West Coast, as well as in Alaska and Hawaii could now face similar risks.

that there is no ‘somewhere else’ on our planet.

Researchers working with the Radiation and Public Health Project (RPHP) in New York have discovered that the Fukushima nuclear disaster has had far-reaching health effects showing that young children born on the US West Coast are 28% more likely to develop congenital hypothyroidism. Fidel Castro calls on North Korea for moderation

Fidel Castro urges North Korea to avoid nuclear warfare LA Times By Emily Alpert April 5, 2013,   Former Cuban President Fidel Castro urged North Korea to steer clear of atomic warfare, saying Koreans faced “one of the most grave risks of nuclear war” since the Cuban missile crisis half a century ago.

North Korea has stepped up its belligerent talk, recently declaring it had entered a state of war with South Korea and threatening a nuclear attack on the United States. Analysts say North Korea is not yet capable of carrying out such a strike, but the escalating threats have grabbed global attention.

Castro said he delivered his message as a friend, recalling “the honor of knowing” former North Korean leader Kim Il Sung, “a historic, strikingly valiant and revolutionary figure” and the late grandfather of current leader Kim Jong Un…… http://www.latimes.com/news/world/worldnow/la-fg-wn-fidel-castro-north-korea-nuclear-war-20130405,0,2215182.story

VIDEO: As signatory to NPT, Iran can enrich uranium

see-this.wayVIDEO: Iran has right to enrich uranium as NPT signatory: Analyst Press TV 5 April 13 A political commentator tells Press TV that the Islamic Republic of Iran as a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty has the same right to enrich uranium as other members of the NPT.

Iran and the P5+1 group of world powers have started a fresh round of two-day comprehensive talks in the Kazakh city of Almaty with the main focus being on Iran’s nuclear energy program. The Iranian delegation is headed by Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Saeed Jalili while the EU foreign policy chief, Catherine Ashton, represents the P5+1 group — Britain, China, France, Russia, the US and Germany. On Thursday, deputy to Iran’s chief negotiator Ali Baqeri said that the Islamic Republic would enter the new round of talks with the P5+1 group with clear, groundbreaking proposals. Earlier in the day, Iran’s chief negotiator urged the world powers to recognize Tehran’s right to enrich uranium under the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

Press TV has conducted an interview with Nader Bagherzadeh, a political commentator from Irvine, to further talk over the issue. The following is an approximate transcript of the interview. …..

any member of the NPT has already agreed to the enrichment by the other members. There are no indications in NPT that somebody could say that I do not recognize your enrichment…. So once you sign the NPT, you have agreed to other nations to have the right to Article 4. So although that has been mentioned but probably Iran and the Iranian leadership wants to hear it from the other countries, Western countries. That is what is expected. So let’s hope that the results will be more positive than what happened in the past year or so.  http://www.presstv.ir/detail/2013/04/05/296601/npt-entitles-iran-to-uranium-enrichment/

Rohingya Genocide in Myanmar | Interview with Assed Baig

……..He looked around to his classmates in the small open space opposite a mosque in the mainly Muslim district of Mandalay. I showed him some pictures from a local journalist; two of them were of dead teenagers. He put his hand up to the camera touching the screen,

“that’s my friend,” he said.
We showed him another and he struggles to speak
“and this one, those are Osama and Karimullah,”

he paused; his friends surrounded the camera and inspected the pictures of bodies on the ground, in unnatural poses……

……The monks that asked to be worshipped were young. Noor Bi was even beaten whilst she was holding her three-year-old son causing her to drop him. Her son was saved by a Buddhist woman who sheltered him and took him to safety……

Eye witness accounts of Meiktila massacre; Beaten, burnt and stabbed

Reports of what actually took place in the Central Myanmar town of Meiktila are still emerging. IDPs are beginning to speak out and tell the world of what they witnessed with their own eyes.
“They beat them in front of me. I was watching. I can still see it.” Noor Bi, is crying as she describes the moment when she saw her husband and brother murdered in front of her eyes as she fled Meiktila.
The mob out numbered the police and they were unable to protect the Muslim minority of the town. The 26-year-old is now a widow with a three-year-old son. As she told her story and what she witnessed, the people around her in the make shift IDP camp now set up in the grounds of a Muslim school in Yindaw, began to cry. Grown men sobbed at hearing her ordeal.
“They beat them and beat them, they were still alive when they threw my husband and brother in the fire. They were burnt alive.” Tears stream down her face as she continues to relay her account.

Secret nuclear waste – Europe to Murmansk to Mayak

Security and guarding is a top priority when a load of nuclear waste is sent. In Poland, heavily armed officers guard every steps of such transports. But, outside the coast of Norway, the cargo could sail without any special attention from the country’s nuclear watchdog.
Mayak disasterAfter unloaded in Murmansk, the containers with nuclear fuel is sent by rail to Mayak, Russia’s reprocessing plant just north of Chelyabinsk in the South Urals.
Nuclear watchdog expects more secret voyages http://barentsobserver.com/en/security/2013/04/nuclear-watchdog-expects-more-secret-voyages-04-04 Heavily armed forces guard the weapon-grade uranium from terrorists before departure, but such potentially deadly cargo can continue to be shipped northbound towards Murmansk when Norway’s radiation watchdog is sleeping. By Thomas Nilsen

BarentsObserver could yesterday tell the story about last week’s top secret voyage of nuclear waste from Europe to Russia’s Arctic port of Murmansk.
Murmansk-secret-nuclear-was

Norwegian Radiation Protection Authorities had no knowledge about the nuclear voyage before being asked by BarentsObserver to give a comment. Then, the vessel “Mikhail Dudin” had sailed along Norway’s long coastline for nearly five days and had already delivered its cargo in Murmansk.

“We have no information about any shipment of nuclear waste outside the coast of Norway last week,” NRPA Director Ole Harbitz said. In Murmansk, information about the nuclear waste arrival was first made public by the non-governmental organization Kola Ecological Center. The group is highly concerned about the radiation safety risk such cargo poses to the city’s 300,000 inhabitants. Maybe for good reasons; similar cargo is expected to arrive again. Continue reading

Internal radiation emitters – cesium and iodine – far more dangerous than external exposure

Risk from internal exposure is 200-600 times greater than risk from external exposure. See thisthis, this and this.

cesium-137 and radioactive iodine – the two main radioactive substances being spewed by the leaking Japanese nuclear plants – are not naturally-occurring substances, and can become powerful internal emitters which can cause tremendous damage to the health of people who are unfortunate enough to breathe in even a particle of the substances, or ingest them in food or water.

Fake Science Alert: Fukushima Radiation Can’t Be Compared to Bananas or X-Rays http://www.zerohedge.com/contributed/2013-04-01/fake-science-alert-fukushima-radiation-can%E2%80%99t-be-compared-bananas-or-x-rays George Washington   04/01/2013

“….Mixing Apples (External) and Oranges (Internal) Moreover,  radioactive particles which end up inside of our lungs or gastrointestinal track, as opposed to radiation which comes to us from outside of our skin are much more dangerous than general exposures to radiation.

The National Research Council’s Committee to Assess the Scientific Information for the Radiation Exposure Screening and Education Program explains:

Radioactivity generates radiation by emitting particles. Radioactive materials outside the the body are called external emitters, and radioactive materials located within the body are called internal emitters.

Internal emitters are much more dangerous than external emitters. Specifically, one is only exposed to radiation as long as he or she is near the external emitter.

For example, when you get an x-ray, an external emitter is turned on for an instant, and then switched back off.

But internal emitters steadily and continuously emit radiation for as long as the particle remains radioactive, or until the person dies – whichever occurs first. As such, they are much more dangerous. Continue reading

North Korea’s missile movement is not targeting USA

flag-N-KoreaDefense chief says North’s missile movement not aimed at U.S. mainland By Kim Eun-jung  SEOUL, April 4 (Yonhap) — South Korean Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin said Thursday that North Korea has moved an intermediate-range missile to its east coast for an imminent test firing or military drill, but it does not seem to be aimed at striking the U.S. mainland.
In a parliamentary defense committee meeting, Kim refuted media reports that Pyongyang has moved a KN-08 missile, which is believed to have a range of 10,000 kilometers, into position to strike the U.S.

Without specifying the type of missile, Kim said it is believed to be able to reach a “considerable distance,” though it is not able to strike the U.S. mainland.

“The missile does not seem to be aimed at the U.S. mainland,” Kim told lawmakers. “It could be aimed at test firing or military drills.” Although there is slim chance that Pyongyang’s harsh rhetoric could lead to a full-scale war, Kim said the North could launch other forms of provocations, including border clashes and cyber attacks.

“Our military has upgraded several systems and carried out drills under upgraded military readiness status,” Kim said.
According to intelligence analysis by South Korean and U.S. forces, it is believed to be a Musudan missile, which is estimated to have a range of 3,000-4,000 km, putting the U.S. base in Guam within striking….. http://english.yonhapnews.co.kr/national/2013/04/04/96/0301000000AEN20130404009251315F.HTML
