Under the title ‘Fallujah’s children’s ‘genetic damage’ that old war horse ‘literally’ of the BBC’s foreign propaganda service, John Simpson, manages not to mention the phrase ‘depleted uranium’ when allegedly reporting on the alarming rise in birth defects that include cancer, leukaemia and a horrific rise in child mortality since the US demolished the city of Fallujah in 2004. Tobacco companies knew that cigarette smoke contained radioactive alpha particles for more than four decades and developed “deep and intimate” knowledge of these particles’ cancer-causing potential, but they deliberately kept their findings from the public, according to a new study by UCLA researchers.
The analysis of dozens of previously unexamined internal tobacco industry documents, made available in 1998 as the result of a legal settlement, reveals that the industry was aware of cigarette radioactivity some five years earlier than previously thought and that tobacco companies, concerned about the potential lung cancer risk, began in-depth investigations into the possible effects of radioactivity on smokers as early as the 1960s.
“The documents show that the industry was well aware of the presence of a radioactive substance in tobacco as early as 1959,” the authors write. “Furthermore, the industry was not only cognizant of the potential ‘cancerous growth’ in the lungs of regular smokers, but also did quantitative radiobiological calculations to estimate the long-term lung radiation absorption dose of ionizing alpha particles emitted from cigarette smoke.” Continue reading

WA GOVERNMENT TO MOVE LAST RESIDENTS FROM ASBESTOS TOWN ABC Radio National 3 April 2013 By:Catherine Van Extel The West Australian Government is looking to move a group of residents who continue to live in the deadly asbestos mining town of Wittenoom, in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. But while there are moves to finally clean up the toxic site, many continue to face the legacy of their time spent growing up in or visiting the notorious town.
The 1990 Midnight Oil song ‘Blue Sky Mine’ was inspired by Wittenoom and its deadly mining industry. It’s estimated that more than 20,000 people lived at Wittenoom before the mine closed in 1966.
Asbestos-related diseases have killed more than 2000 former workers and family members of Wittenoom, a death toll that continues to rise.
In 2007, the state government withdrew Wittenoom’s town status—disconnecting services like water and electricity—but a small group of residents stayed. Now the government wants them out in order to remediate the contaminated site. Continue reading

In addition to analyzing wastewater from hydraulic fracturing, known as fracking, the study also will analyze radioactivity in drill cuttings, drilling mud, drilling equipment, treatment solids and sediments at well pads, wastewater treatment and disposal facilities and landfill leachate, among others. The cost and commitment of replacing Trident with a like-for-like system means the Government should consider what the “most necessary element” of our deterrent is, says Hugh Chalmers from the Royal United Services Institute. The Government ought to consider the range of possible options for the UK’s nuclear deterrent given the country’s financial situation and the committment that renewing the Trident weapons system represents, says a nuclear analyst at the Royal United Services Institute.
“I would recommed that you have to look at all the options available and think very carefully about what is the most necessary element of our deterrent, and which elements of the UK deterrent are no longer required, so we can make cuts where we can, and how we can,” says Hugh Chalmers.
Mr Chalmers also played down the threat posed by North Korea, which has conducted three nuclear tests since 2006 as well as launching a long range rocket in December 2012.
“North Korea doesn’t currently present a direct threat to the UK.
“There’s a suspicion that they might be able to reach the US but they certainly cannot reach the UK, and their ability to mount a nuclear weapon on these missiles is also hotly debated,” he said.
Crescent Dunes Solar Energy Plant solves problem of “intermittent power”

Russia still keeping Norway in the dark about secret radwaste shipments to Murmansk
…..Bøhmer insisted on the transparency to Norwegian officials of nuclear shipments off Norway’s coast, even through international waters.
“There are two things that are critical for nuclear transports off Norway’s coast,” he said.
“First is that the vessels in question have a good track record for transporting radioactive materials.
Second is that Norwegian authorities be notified before such cargoes so that the coast guard can track them and effect efforts to help in the event that anything goes wrong.”

A secret cargo of spent nuclear fuel from Poland arrived at the Atomflot port in Murmansk on Monday aboard the Mikhail Dudin in another delivery that skirted the coast of Norway, causing officials here consternation over not being notified of radioactive cargo off their coast.
Such muffled cargos to Murmansk have raised hackles with the Norwegian government, the environmental community, and Murmansk’s population of 300,000 before.
But according to Andrei Zolotkov, director of Bellona Murmansk, the transports are part of a US-Russian agreement called the Global Partnership, which repatriates spent research reactor fuel from the former Soviet Bloc.
Zolotkov did, however, raise questions as to whether the Mikhail Dudin was certified to carry such cargos and said he had yesterday sent an inquiry to Atomflot. He said such inquiries typically take several days to answer. The Mikhail Dudin delivered some 82 tons of spent nuclear feul to Murmansk, according to Norwegian media.
Yet, while other environmental organizations in the Murmansk area decried the secret shipment, Zolotkov insisted that keeping shipments like the one delivered earlier this week under wraps was essential to avoid acts of terrorism.
“There is nothing unusual about this shipment at all, and no reason for anyone to turn it into a scandal,” said Zolotkov by telephone from Murmansk today.
Nils Bøhmer, Bellona’s general manager and nuclear physicist, however, said that the transports must at least be disclosed to Norwegian authorities so they can help if anything goes wrong.
But the director of Norway’s Radiation Protection Authority Ole Harbitz told the Barents Observer news portal that he had received no information about the Mikhail Dudin’s shipment as it traversed the Norwegian coast last week – and this is far from the first time this has happened.
The spent nuclear fuel is expected to be delivered from Atomflot by rail to the Southern Urals reprocessing site at Mayak.
Shipments small worry compared to other dangers
Zolotkov explained that other radiological hazards surrounding Murmansk Harbor dwarfed the spent fuel transports.

North Korea dominates the news today, as it pronounces a state of war with South Korea, and its readiness to strike USA with nuclear weapons. Most expert observers believe that North Korea is in no position to carry out these threats. United States has moved anti-missile system to Guam and has moved Two advanced missile destroyers closer to North Korea. Tensions have risen in South Korea, and it’s an atmosphere of brinkmanship that could result in military action.
USA. Continued warnings about the dangerous state of Hanford nuclear waste tanks – explosion is areal possibility. Gallup poll shows that Americans prefer wind and solar power.
UK. Scotland ambivalent at being selected as base for dismantling nuclear submarines. UK govt still writhing around trying to make its subsidies for new nuclear look like well – not suibsidies.
Japan. More and more information leaking out about Fukushima and its radioactive water problem – still leaking into the Pacific. New concerns about ocean life affected by this radiation – from shellfish to sea lions.

North Korea: international relations on the brink
The situation is ripe for miscalculation. The new South Korean president, Park Geun-hye, whose mother was killed by a North Korean agent, has made it clear she will not roll over like other South Korean leaders. Moreover, there is a new U.S.-South Korean agreement that could result in the United States more forcefully backing the South militarily short of all-out war. Another North Korean attack could result in the U.S. forces joining South Korea in some form of military retaliation.
Either way, we should not think this is a case of parties on the peninsula crying wolf. North Korea has shown time and time again it will strike with violence. It may well be on the verge of doing so again.
