U.S. senators questioning shipment of nuclear generators across Great Lakes

Great Lakes nuclear shipment plan sparks U.S. queries CBC News,  October 4, 2010 By Max Paris, Seven U.S. senators have sent a letter to Environment Minister Jim Prentice and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission demanding answers about an Ontario utility’s plan to ship used nuclear steam generators through the Great Lakes to Sweden.In the letter, the seven senators write they are “concerned” with Bruce Power’s plan to send 16 radioactively contaminated generators “through the Great Lakes and United States territory.”

The senators, all Democrats, including assistant Senate Majority Leader Russ Feingold, as well as Michigan’s Carl Levin and New York Senator Charles Schumer, also “seek assurances” that Prentice and the CNSC are thoroughly reviewing the plan and considering “safer alternatives.”….

the senators said they have urged the U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Material Safety Administration to reject the plan if it does not protect the Great Lakes and fails to comply with U.S. and international standards.

“We urge Canada to do the same,” the senators wrote…….
