India Blooms News ServicePatna, June 13 (IBNS) The main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday said the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) has introduced the Civil Nuclear Liability Bill hastily under US pressure, leaving the Indians with a raw deal from any Bhopal tragedy like accident.
The Bill seeks to cap the level of compensation (likely at $450 million) in the event of an accident and makes the operator, not the supplier (US companies like GE and Westinghouse or France’s Areva), liable for it. Continue reading

Inspection of mysterious shutdown of nuclear plant
Reactor shutdown prompts inspection at Surry nuclear plant. The Virginia Gazette, Williamsburg Virgini, June 12, 2010 SURRY — The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has dispatched a Special Inspection Team to the Surry nuclear power plant. The team is reviewing a June 8 trip that prompted a shutdown of the reactor.According to the NRC, a Unit 1 electrical bus failed while plant employees were performing maintenance. That loss of power to some components caused the Unit 1 reactor to automatically shut down. There were several complications associated with that shutdown, including loss of power to some components, loss of some instrumentation and control room indications, and a small fire in a cabinet in the control room.

Utah will suffer, if “blended” radioactivity is allowed
Nuclear cocktail, Don’t blend radioactive wastes, Salt Lake Tribune : 06/11/2010 0 If you combine hamburger and soy beans and call it a vegetable burger, you’re doing vegetarians a disservice. The meat is still part of the patty.Likewise, if the federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission allows the nuclear industry to blend assorted low-level radioactive wastes to achieve a mix that unfairly qualifies for disposal in the Beehive State, Utahns will be done a disservice. Like meat in a fake vegeburger, the hotter wastes that we prohibit would still be a part of the mix.
State regulators and elected leaders have made it crystal clear through statute, rules and speech that Utah is only willing to accept Class A waste, the most benign category. The NRC should honor that wish instead of trying to foist hotter Class B and C wastes on the state through blending. But that’s the effort afoot, as the NRC contemplates a policy change that would benefit the nuclear power industry and Salt Lake City-based EnergySolutions — at Utah’s expense.
