International airport to get full-body radiation scanners

Newark Liberty Airport to receive full-body scanners January 1, 10: Essex County Conservative Examiner, Terry Hurlbut Newark Liberty International Airport which has always been an early adopter of the latest security equipment and measures, will be among the first to receive the new full-body scanners designed for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), according to separate announcements by TSA and the Port Authority, as reported in The Star-Ledger (Newark). The move is sure to be controversial, because many questions about the safety, efficacy and implications of these scanners remain unanswered. The TSA said yesterday that 150 more full-body scanners, each costing $170,000, will be made available to airports nationwide. TSA will also buy 300 more of these scanners before 2012, according to CNN………………

Any passenger worried about the radiation exposure can always refuse the scan–in which case a TSA agent will pat the passenger down. This alternative, and the images that the scanners produce, raise an obvious privacy concern.
