800 protests world-wide call for renewable energy, no oil drilling
Hand In Hand, Protesters Oppose Offshore Oil Drilling | unEARTHED, 28 June 2010, “………..Their message is clear: No more Gulf oil spill disasters………movement has spread far and wide as people witness daily the threat that oil drilling presents to America’s coastal economies and marine habitat. On Saturday, protestors around the world gathered at one of the more than 800 events held to clasp hands, drawing both a metaphorical and actual line in the sand against the threat of offshore drilling.
The hope is that the gesture will help convince our government that we’re serious about the need to preserve some of America’s most valuable assets—our coastal areas—by halting the expansion of offshore drilling and adopting policies that encourage the development of clean and renewable sources of energy.

Vietnam’s nuclear plans unlikely to succeed
A recent World Bank study found Vietnam could produce more than 500 gigawatts of electricity from land-based and off-shore wind farms, 10 times the country’s expected national demand in 2020.
Vietnam’s unnecessary nuclear ‘renaissance’ Greenpeace International, by jmckeati – June 23, 2010 The news just in from Vietnam is that Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has approved the construction of eight new nuclear power plants in the country. Each plant will feature ‘at least’ four reactors and all will be operational by 2030.
So, that’s ‘at least’ 32 reactors built within the next 20 years. Good luck with that, Mr Dung, because you’re really going to need it. Continue reading

New Australian PM ‘should focus on cutting emissions’, Low Carbon Economy, 6/25/2010 There are hopes that Australia’s new prime minister could help improve the country’s environmental record………..In her first speech as prime minister Ms Gillard said she believes in climate change and that humans are contributing to the problem……Greenpeace Australia Pacific said that the first steps Ms Gillard should take would be to move subsidies from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources, introduce a carbon levy and limit emissions from new power stations.

Spain planning huge leap forward in renewable energy
Despite cuts, Spain’s subsidy structure still enables renewable power producers to earn up to 10 times more than fossil fuel producers for their energy. However, Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luiz Rodriguez Zapatero plans to continue incremental cuts in those subsidies. He believes that his country’s goals will be obtained through increased private investment.
