Water shortage may be the finish of the nuclear industry

Water Scarcity: Nuclear Power’s Achilles’ Heel, THE HUFFINGTON POST Kyle Rabin:  June 28, 2010, Scientists, researchers and other experts warn that the United States is entering an era of water scarcity. Back in 2003, the US General Accounting Office (now known as the US Government Accountability Office or GAO) projected that 36 states, under normal conditions, could face water shortages by 2013. However, those shortages were realized in 2008 — five years sooner than predicted. Current forecasts suggest that climate change will only exacerbate the challenges of managing and protecting water resources. Continue reading

See how solar energy could transform America’s economy

Like it or not, though, what is taking place in the energy field is a radical change in thinking or, as coined by Thomas Kuhn, a paradigm shift .This transformation does not just happen, but is caused by agents of change, and the greatest agents of change in the transition to solar energy will be the American people, themselves.
Newsweek has a nice photo slide show of the progress in solar energy at:

Letting the Sunshine in II: America, the Solar Nation jacksonville.com by Joanne Herrmann on June 24, 2010 Envision this: As the sun rises in the East, solar panels on buildings and utility arrays in cities from north of Boston to New York to Atlanta to south of Miami collect the sun’s power, which not only supplies the energy needs of the East Coast but also exports the excess through smart grids to those cities awakening in the Midwest and slumbering in the darkness along the West Coast. U.S. Senators trying to greenwash nuclear power

The nuclear power industry has skillfully and successfully painted itself green — an environmentally benign answer to reducing carbon emissions. The industry and many in Washington want us to believe that a new generation of nuclear reactors will solve the problems of climate change and allow us to live happily ever after. That’s a costly fairy tale.

US climate proposal a nuclear bailout By Richard Clapp  Shanghai Daily, 2010-6-19 THE long-awaited climate proposal crafted by US Senators John Kerry and Joseph Lieberman has finally landed on Capitol Hill. Spain planning huge leap forward in renewable energy

Despite cuts, Spain’s subsidy structure still enables renewable power producers to earn up to 10 times more than fossil fuel producers for their energy. However, Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luiz Rodriguez Zapatero plans to continue incremental cuts in those subsidies. He believes that his country’s goals will be obtained through increased private investment.

Spain Shoots for 67 Percent More Renewable Energy, CALFINDER , 18 June 2010, In a draft proposal on its way to the European Commission, Spain proposes that renewable generation capacity increase to 70 gigawatts by 2020, up from 42 gigawatts currently. Continue reading

Oil spill may lead to change in “Consumer Society”

Could the BP Oil Spill be the Rosa Parks for Real Environmental Change?, AlterNet, by Devona Walker, 16 June 2010, We may have reached a tipping point when it comes to changing our energy consumption habits. “……While our Gulf Coast will likely take generations to recover from the deepwater BP oil spill, and it will likely take a good decade for our economy to fully recover from the financial crisis, both of these catastrophic events may just serve as tipping points for real change………..

Consumers are as much to blame for every gas-guzzling vehicles we purchase. Congress is to blame for the last decade of “renewable-energy-slashing” and propping up the petroleum industry with billions in tax rebates. Dick Cheney is definitely to blame. Obama, too, is to blame for obvious naivety in his initial response…………The BP oil spill is reminiscent of the beginning of a public opinion tipping point, the kind that precedes fundamental change, the kind that will ignite a movement. Obama’s effort on renewable energy – a tiny drop in the bucket

Cleaning Up: President Obama must begin to lead the nation beyond oil syracuse.com , June 15, 2010, “… a $500,000 grant for the region to cut greenhouse gas emissions. ….The grant, won by the Central New York Regional Planning and Development Board, will be combined with $250,000 in matching funds to help nine communities in Cayuga, Cortland, Madison, Onondaga and Oswego counties reduce their carbon footprints by retrofitting buildings, making buses more efficient and other strategies…..compared to the all-out effort needed to wean America from fossil fuels to clean, renewable energy, it is a tiny drop in the bucket.……….The future lies in conservation and renewable energy development. But American leaders — including President Barack Obama — have been far too timid about declaring either as a true national priority.
