Fairewinds’ Arnie Gundersen, Nuclear Engineer: The question is do you spend it [$70-100 billion] now and risk high exposures to people for what gain, or do you entomb these plants with concrete and then come back in a hundred years, that’s a question the Japanese have yet to answer.

Gundersen: I would entomb them and come back later. […] I would do basically what we’ve done at Chernobyl, which is put a sarcophagus around it. Basically fill them with concrete. I would also then bore under the plants and continually withdraw the groundwater, because there’s still going to be seepage of radioactive material into the ocean and into the groundwater and keep that from seeping out into the environment. We’re seeing that already […] Kids were tested just in the last couple months and almost half of them had thyroid nodules [and cysts]. Normally about 1 to 2% of kids would have thyroid nodules. So we’re seeing an enormous increase in cancer precursor for thyroid cancers.

That’s quite normal. Meaning as you can imagine, workers work very close to the fuel.
Now we have to consider what will be in Fukushima, this is Tepco’s estimation, they estimate only 5 years [into the future]… they say now last year they needed such number of workers, but now the future necessities are much less. But if you compare, those periods [Tepco’s first 5 years] are only this period [left half of Three Mile Island chart].

After 10 years when the [fuel] debris removal starts, then the exposure to radiation must be serious, but no one talks about that.

Nuclear engineer Arnie Gundersen gives a talk on his calculations of the amount of radiation released during the accident at Three Mile Island. Mr. Gundersen’s calculations differ from those of the NRC’s and official industry estimates. Arnie Gundersen was a senior executive in the nuclear industry with over twenty years experience. Mr. Gundersen holds Bachelors and Masters degrees in Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. In 1990 he came forward as a whistleblower and was fired that same year. Over the next several years, his case got a great deal of attention, and he testified before Congress during hearings on ways to protect whistleblowers. Mr. Gundersen is now a prominent nuclear safety expert witness.

“帰れ、帰れ！　解散しろ！” Go home, go home! Dissolve the Diet and hold election! People shouted at the DPJ leadership candidates speaking atop the van, on September 19, 2012 on the street corner in Shinjuku, Tokyo.

According to people who watched the snippet in the evening news in Japan, the television stations all filtered out the angry crowd.

GE Nuclear Plant Inspector/Whistleblower Kei Sugaoko Speaks About Fukushima, GE &  Obama http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJjbNw07OUAGeneral Electric nuclear plant inspector Kei Sugaoka was one of the inspectors at the Fukushima Daiichi plant in 2000. He noticed a crack in the steam dryer which he videotaped. He was later ordered by Tokyo Electric Power Company TEPCO to edit this part of the tape which is illegal in the United States. He went public and some TEPCO managers were fired. He thought that things would change but they have not. Additionally, as a result of being a whistleblower he was also laid off by General Electric and has been struggling to get the truth out about these dangerous plants. Sugaoka has inspected plants throughout the world including in Taiwan and Europe.

I was employed by a subcontractor of Tepco.

I was asked to write a fake CV by the contracting company.

I was told my duty was to be logistical support. But the reality was to work at the highly radioactive area (over 1 milliSv/hr).

Most of the workers come from all over Japan as a day laborer.

Underage workers (18 & 19 years old) are also employed.

These are just ordinary people without good knowledge of radiation. The fake CV establishes them as an experienced worker and they are sent to the Fuksuhima Daiichi NPP.
