U.N. Downplays Health Effects of Nuclear Radiation, IPS, By George Gao, 26 June 13  UNITED NATIONS, –  “……..Radiation from uranium mining The IAEA promotes “safe, responsible development of uranium resources”, the raw materials used to fuel nuclear reactors and build nuclear bombs.

For Ashish Birulee, a Ho tribal resident of Jadugoda, India, safe uranium mining in his community is far from reality, and the health effects of radiation are as clear as the photographs he has taken to document them.

Birulee, a student and photojournalist, lives next to a tailings dam, filled with radioactive waste from a uranium purification plant operated by the Uranium Corporation of India.

“Lung cancer, skin cancer, tumours, congenital deformities, down syndrome, mental retardation, megacephaly, sterility, infertility in married couples, thalassemia [and] rare birth defects like Gastroschisis [are] common in the area,” he told IPS.

“We are like guinea pigs here,” he said, citing government negligence on the matter. “I’m experiencing everyday radiation exposure and also witnessing how my people are suffering.”…   http://www.ipsnews.net/2013/06/u-n-downplays-health-effects-of-nuclear-radiation/

Nuclear firms gave big bucks to US congressmen to promote MOX nuclear program

money-lobbyingEnergy Department Nuclear Nonproliferation Program Plagued By Problems Center For Public Integrity   HUFFINGTON POST By Douglas Birch and R. Jeffrey Smith, 25 June 13 “…..For years, the plant has been kept alive by South Carolina’s mostly Republican congressional delegation, which includes many strident critics of federal spending, budget deficits, and mammoth public works projects – including Sen. Tim Scott (R.) and Rep. Joe Wilson (R.). On the issue of the MOX plant, which employs 2,100 workers, they have been hugely supportive.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), joined others on Capitol Hill in January in asserting that “the time has come for the President to face up to the need to control federal spending.” Since then, Graham has lectured DOE officials at hearings on the diplomatic and security disaster that would ensue if the Savannah River project was halted.

With three other Republican senators, Graham pledged in a joint statement last month to hold up nominations and use the budget process “to ensure the [MOX] program moves forward.”

Graham declined to comment for this article. According to an analysis by the Center for Public Integrity of campaign donations and leadership committee receipts listed by the Center for Responsive Politics, Graham has received $46,500 since 2001 from three private firms with a stake in the MOX project. In total, the firms provided at least $437,000 in campaign funds during this period to members of the four congressional committees that decide the Energy Department’s annual budge

Rep. James Clyburn (D.-S.C.), who has long been a member of the House Democratic leadership and who has boasted about helping block Hobson’s challenge to the plant, collected $51,000 in political funding from the firms, whose lobbyists and officers also donated $40,000 to a golf charity he runs. Clyburn’s spokeswoman Hope Derrick said the congressman “is solely motivated by the best interests of the people and communities he serves in Congress.”

In the last three years alone, Areva and Shaw have spent a total of $6.3 million to lobby for their legislative interests, including efforts by at least four former congressmen and some former committee staffers that advocated spending on MOX and nuclear issues, according to an analysis by the Center for Public Integrity……”.http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/06/25/energy-department-nuclear-nonproliferation_n_

Global Research News Hour Episode 31 “Russia has over a thousand hydrogen bombs on hair-trigger alert. You’re all targeted—every town with a population of 50,000 or more is targeted with at least one bomb. There may be 60 targeted on Washington alone, or on New York.

And America’s got that many targeted on Russia, China, etc…

They’re ready to go with the press of a button by Putin or Obama and they have three minutes to decide whether or not to press the button. Computer errors happen a lot … people are hacking into the early warning system and they could start a nuclear war. Especially as tensions rise in the Middle East, this is very, very dangerous.” – Dr. Helen Caldicott

Project Censored lists the incident and the under-reported impacts including 14,000 deaths in the US linked to radioactive fall-out as among its top 25 most censored stories of 2011-2012.

Complementing Caldicott’s presentation, Michel Chossudovsky of the Centre for Research on Globalization contributes his own research into the new nuclear doctrine.

According to Chossudovsky, nuclear weapons are now considered as part of the arsenal of conventional warfare as opposed to a ‘doomsday’ weapon meant as a bluff to scare off a would-be attacker.

Both Chossudovsky and Caldicott agree that the wider public needs greater exposure to today’s nuclear danger which is the theme of this week’s show.

[…] It appears the most dangerous material on earth is out of its tank and out of their control, and there’s no immediate plan on how to solve the problem. […]

Now it appears the worst case scenario has happened, the waste has eaten through the outer tank wall. […]

But no one expected this […]

A crew working on the leak detection pit pulled a piece of equipment from it and measured a whopping contamination reading — 800,000 dpm,or disintegrations per minute. […]

Podcast about Fukushima children

podcastSmAUDIO http://fairewinds.org/podcast/fukushima-kids-with-yumi-kikuchi  About This Podcast On today’s podcast, Maggie and Nat interview our very inspiring friend Yumi Kikuchi.  Fairewinds has been working with Yumi for more than a year now. She encouraged us to send material to the Tokyo Peace Film Festival, which she organized, and we sent our film “You are not alone.” Yumi also co-sponsored Arnie’s trip to Japan in 2012, where he gave the presentation “Japan at a Crossroads: Two Futures.” Yumi left Japan with her family after the Fukushima Daiichi accident, and currently lives in Hawaii. She founded the Fukushima Kids Hawaii Project (FKHP), usually shortened to Fukushima Kids, and has just returned to Japan where she will be spreading awareness about the project and fundraising.  Fukushima Kids aims to host children from Fukushima in Hawaii during school vacations, where they can play outdoors safe from high radiation levels. Children are more vulnerable to the effects of radiation than adults, and we are already seeing signs of thyroid cancer and cysts among children in Fukushima. There are about 300,000 kids living in the Fukushima prefecture, and Yumi is hoping to host 15 kids this first summer.

Fairewinds: Thyroid data means much more radiation must have come out of Fukushima reactors than anyone reported — Medical professionals are talking about how many cancers have started showing up (AUDIO) http://enenews.com/fairewinds-thyroid-data-means-radiation-fukushima-reactors-anyone-reported-medical-professionals-talking-about-many-cancers-started-showing-audio

Maggie Gundersen, founder of Fairewinds Energy Education: We’re also working with different medical professionals who are talking about how many thyroid cancers have started showing up.

After an accident of the magnitude of Fukushima Daiichi, the thyroid readings that they’re getting now at two years should have been something around 5 years.

So that must mean that much more radiation came out than anyone suspected […] or at least reported.

h/t Anonymous tip

Little is known about what was put in the tanks and how it’s changed since the 1940s. [Donna Busche, a manager of environmental and nuclear safety at Hanford,]  is worried it’s unstable and an explosion during clean-up could release radioactive material.

Asked how a treatment facility can be built when it’s unclear what is in the tanks, Busche says, “I think that is the fundamental issue. We don’t understand the chemical reactions, but yet we’re building the plant.”

Similar concerns were raised in a review by the Government Accountability Office, Congress’ investigative agency. It blamed the Department of Energy for building the plant before the design process was complete. As a result, parts of the facility “may not work and may not meet nuclear safety standards,” the report said.

Radioactivity in the trees – Fukushima forest

Fukushima forests found to be radioactive  9 Mar 2013

Two years after the triple calamities of earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster ravaged Japan’s northeastern Pacific coast, forests that cover 70 percent of the Fukushima Prefecture have been found to contain high concentrations of radioactive cesium. With traces revealed not only in the fallen leaves and soil, but in the trees themselves, the findings suggest that radiation has permanently found its way into the ecosystem. The government is already spending billions of dollars decontaminating various towns in Fukushima, but the forests continue to emit radioactivity, putting the residents at risk. Scientists suggest cutting down the trees as soon as possible because the cesium will gradually be transferred to the earth itself. Many residents are now suing TEPCO, the nuclear plant’s operator, for the impact the disaster has had on surrounding communities. It is estimated the power company will pay some about $400bn in cleanup costs and compensation. Al Jazeera’s Steve Chao reports from Fukushima.

AUDIO: China starts carbon trading scheme

Hear-This-wayAUDIO China launches carbon trading scheme in bid to reduce emissions in Shenzhen  http://www.abc.net.au/news/2013-06-18/china-launches-its-first-carbon-trading-scheme/4763770  19 June 13 China, the world’s largest carbon emitter, has launched its first carbon trading scheme as it tries to reduce pollution from greenhouse gases. A platform allowing businesses in the southern city of Shenzhen to trade permits to emit carbon was established on Sunday, and trading began on Tuesday.

Under the scheme, companies will be assigned an emissions quota and will be able to profit from selling excess permits to other firms if they emit below their quota.

China plans to open similar schemes in seven areas including the capital Beijing, the major commercial centre of Shanghai, the port city of Tianjin and Guangdong province before 2014, in what analysts say is a step towards a nationwide carbon market.
The pilot programs will cover areas in which tens of millions of people live and cover far more emissions than the entire carbon market in Australia.

They also come as the European carbon trading market has collapsed, while Australia’s could be scrapped depending on the outcome of the September 14 election.Climate Institute deputy CEO Irwin Jackson says the scheme is a significant step forward for China.

Youtube: Internet service by solar powered balloon

Solar And Balloon-Powered Internet For Everyone http://www.energymatters.com.au/index.php?main_page=news_article&article_id=3794 17 June 13 Google hopes to bring Internet access to the two-thirds of the world’s population that does not have it with the assistance of solar power and balloons.

Project Loon is a network of balloons travelling at 20 km above the Earth’s surface; each decked out with transmission equipment able to provide connectivity to a ground area about 40 km in diameter with download speeds comparable to 3G.

Project Loon’s balloon envelopes are made from polyethylene plastic standing fifteen meters wide by twelve meters tall when fully inflated. A parachute attached to the top of the envelope allows for a controlled descent whenever a balloon needs to be taken out of service.
A small box hanging below the balloon contains the electronics and radio antennas; plus batteries to store energy so the balloons can operate during the night.

Solar panels with a total capacity of 100 watts sit between the balloon and the hardware. Between the wind and  sun, Project Loon is able to power itself purely through renewable energy.

One of the major challenges Google faced was how to control the balloons’ path through the sky. One balloon would be challenging enough and there will be hundreds of these in the future. While not providing much in the way of further detail, the company says it has found a way to do that, using just wind and solar power – along with some complex algorithms and serious computing power.

The Project Loon pilot test began this month when thirty balloons were launched from New Zealand; beaming Internet to a group of 50 pilot testers. The technology will be refined based on the results before the next phase.
New Zealanders interested in registering to be a Project Loon pilot tester for future test launches can sign up here.

“The idea may sound a bit crazy,” says Google’s official blog, “and that’s part of the reason we’re calling it Project Loon – but there’s solid science behind it.”

Nuclear marketing film ‘Pandora’s Promise’ gets some poor reviews

nuclear-dead-catSome thoughts on “Pandora’s Promise” and the nuclear debate By David Roberts, Grist 14 June 13“……Pandora’s Promise is directed by Robert Stone, who brings all the zealotry of a convert to the proceedings. The results are … well, take it away, reviewers.

The New York Times:

You need to make an argument. A parade of like-minded nuclear-power advocates who assure us that everything will be all right just doesn’t cut it.

Variety:

Where Stone errs, even on behalf of his own argument, is in not including a single voice in opposition to nukes, even just for contrast, and in treating those who opposed nuclear power in the past as a bunch of brain-dead hippies. The juxtapositions created between his current-day subjects and people marching and singing against nukes in 1979, make the latter look like idiots, when all they were doing was acting in good conscience. It’s not the best way to make a persuasive argument. Regarding the science of the pro-nuclear debate, no one on screen is less than convincing, and nothing in the end seems more benign than a twin-stacked breeder reactor; the viewer might almost come away thinking that what he or she needs in the morning is a healthy dose of nuclear radiation. But this is a zealotry issue, and Stone is a convert.

Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists:

To be sure, there is nothing wrong with changing your mind. In fact, there is much to admire in those who recognize altered circumstances, integrate fresh information, and come to a new judgment. What is disingenuous about Pandora’s Promise is the way the new judgment is conveyed. The film mocks groups that continue to protest nuclear power, treating one-time colleagues as extremists and zealots. An audience discussion after a preview at the University of Chicago made it clear I was not the only one who sensed the self-righteous tone of the newly converted in the film’s narrative. In the end, by dismissing the protestors and failing to engage them in significant debate about the pros and cons of nuclear energy, the film undermined its own message.

Seattle Weekly:

But the doc’s bigger flaw is that no one is allowed to make a reasoned anti-nuclear argument. To the well-made film’s many statistics, graphics, and common-sense assertions, the lack of a rebuttal is deafening.

Village Voice:

Alas, [the movie’s] argument against fear-driven orthodoxy is undercut by the fact that, as with so many of this subgenre’s entrants, there are no substantial competing voices included in the mix …

Nathaniel White-Joyal, Host: It’s clear that the west coast of the United States will be affected by the radiation from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.

Akio Matsumura, Diplomat: Let me clarify. We are facing global disaster — catastrophe — occurring. From that perspective, over 40 years, 50 years, or maybe 100 years. We cannot escape from this fact. For that we have to keep in mind. […] This radioactive material, or contaminated water, any cases, reach out to your west coast as well. If you are counting on Japan, I can assure you now they do not take serious action.
