Obama’s new nuclear weapons policy

White House to Unveil More Restrictive Nuke Policy CA-GOV  TPMDC April 6, 2010The Obama administration is set to unveil a new policy on nuclear weapons, which narrow the circumstances under which the United States would use such weapons. The Associated Press reports: “The U.S. officials said the administration’s new policy would stop short of declaring that the United States would never be the first to launch a nuclear attack, as many arms control advocates had recommended. But it would describe the weapons’ purpose as ‘primarily’ or ‘fundamentally’ to deter or respond to a nuclear attack. The officials said the document would say it is a U.S. goal to move toward a policy in which the ‘sole purpose’ of nuclear weapons is to deter or respond to nuclear attack. That wording would all but rule out the use of such weapons to respond to an attack by conventional, biological or chemical weapons. Previous U.S. policy was more ambiguous.”

Indian Point Nuclear Reactor – A Dead End For Future Energy Needs

Indian Point (and Nuclear Power) Take a Hit | Climate Change, By Bill Hewitt April 4 10″…….Indian Point, if you don’t know, is one of the oldest nuclear power facilities in the US. Unit 1 opened in 1962 and ran until 1974, but Units 2 and 3, opened in the mid-1970s and are still running. Indian Point, by the way, is just downriver from Storm King Mountain over which one of the first big victories of the environmental movement was won…… “‘That power is replaceable,’ said Alex Matthiessen, president of environmental group Riverkeeper. ‘The evidence for why the plant doesn’t meet state water-quality standards is overwhelming,’ he said, adding Indian Point accounts for the deaths of about a billion fish a year and that the group estimates cooling towers could be constructed for $200 million to $300 million.”Beyond Indian Point, Matthiessen’s assertion about nuclear power being replaceable is completely correct.  We really ought not to be going further down this dead end road when there is already so much proven potential in renewables, energy efficiency, and all the other clean tech approaches that are coming so rapidly into play.

Make uranium mills accountable for their radioactive devastation

the legacy of uranium mills was that operators worked them until the money was gone, then closed up shop, claimed bankruptcy and left radioactive waste behind for taxpayers to clean up. The waste then threatens and harms groundwater, streams, wildlife and communities.

Make uranium milling cleaner With the nation considering more nuclear energy, a bill that requires mill operators to clean up as they go is a smart move. The Denver Post 04/04/2010 Given the atrocious environmental record of uranium mills in Colorado and the West, a bipartisan effort in the General Assembly designed to keep mill operators from leaving behind costly piles of toxic waste makes good sense.
