Will a Failed Solar Loan Guarantee Kill New Nukes?,

By Harvey Wasserman, 6 Oct 11,  Republicans up in arms about the infamous failed federal $535 million loan guarantee for the Solyndra solar panel producer are finally tasked to apply the same standards to nuclear power.

If that happens, there will be no more commercial reactors built in the United States.

Unlike solar power, atomic energy cannot attract private capital.  So if the GOP succeeds in dragging down the entire federal energy loan program, the “Nuclear Renaissance” could be definitively done. Continue reading →

Nuclear Regulatory Commission report on dangers of spent fuel pools

Nuclear agency urged to review spent fuel pools,Forbes, By MATTHEW DALY , 10.05.11, WASHINGTON — The Nuclear Regulatory Commission should take immediate steps to improve the safety of pools containing radioactive waste stored at U.S. nuclear plants, an internal report released Wednesday said.

The report by NRC staff elevates the importance of spent-fuel pools, saying current regulations do not require instruments measuring water levels to be operable in case of accident. Water levels at spent-fuel pools were a key issue after a March 11 earthquake and tsunami that crippled a nuclear plant in Japan…..

The report also recommended immediate reviews of seismic and flooding risks at the nation’s 104 nuclear reactors. Those risks have come under greater scrutiny in the wake of the Japan crisis and the East Coast earthquake in August, which caused the ground to shake much more than a Virginia nuclear plant near the quake’s epicenter was designed to withstand….

USA nuclear companies up against India’s Nuclear Liability Law

India-U.S. Nuclear Growth May See More Delays, WSJ, By ERIC YEP MUMBAI – U.S.-based companies hoping to cash in on India’s plans to increase its number of nuclear reactors could face more delays despite the government’s efforts to bring the country’s liability rules for nuclear accidents in line with global norms.

U.S. companies had expected big contracts to flow from India’s nuclear expansion after a New Delhi-Washington agreement in 2005 and a subsequent waiver from the Nuclear Suppliers’ Group on the transfer of nuclear technology to India.

But last year India’s parliament passed a liability law making both equipment suppliers and reactor operators liable to accident compensation claims, stalling the entry of companies like GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy and Westinghouse Electric Co. Continue reading →

Anti nuclear protest rally in Toledo, Ohio

Anti-nuclear activists rally in Promenade Park, By Dick Berry,TOLEDO, OH (WTOL), 1 Oct 11 – Anti-nuclear activists rallied Saturday in Downtown Toledo’s Promenade Park. They called for the closure of nuclear power plants like Davis Besse and production of more green energy.

The keynote speaker was Democratic Cleveland Congressman Dennis Kusinich. He says Americans need to ditch nuclear power and develop less expensive forms of energy, such as wind and solar technology.

“We could create millions of jobs doing that. We have to look at how we can get our energy going again, protect the jobs we have now and get our economy going again using new energy development.”….

“The technology is there with wind and solar. It’s just a matter of us having the political will to do it” says Michael Leonardi of the Toledo Coalition for Safe Energy….  http://www.wtol.com/story/15596725/anti-nuclear-activists-rally-in-promenade-park

“Independent” nuclear expert Meserve paid by nuclear industry

Frequent Media Nuclear Expert On Payroll Of Multiple Nuclear Power Companies , Simply Info, September 16th, 2011    This article came out through US news services yesterday frequently quoting a nuclear expert who is claiming newer commercial nuclear power plants are safer or superior to plants like Fukushima. Richard Meserve, the expert in the article claims because Fukushima was built in the 1970′s and that newer plant designs would be much safer.

The bulk of the US power plants were built in the 60′s and 70′s just like Fukushima. The word for word line about newer plants being safer is a standard line from the commercial nuclear power industry. The article cites’s Meserve’s credentials as being a former NRC head and as a consultant to the IAEA. After some research it is clear that this doesn’t even scratch the surface of Meserve’s real allegiances or who who signs his substantial paychecks. Continue reading →

Nuclear plant in Georgia leaking radioactive water to ground

Radioactive water found under Ga. nuke plant, Forbes, By RAY HENRY , 09.30.11, ATLANTA — Radioactive water has been found underneath a Southern Co. nuclear power plant in southeast Georgia, but officials said Friday that the leak does not pose an immediate threat to public health and is unlikely to contaminate any drinking water.

The Atlanta-based Southern Co. learned of the leak beneath Plant Hatch in Baxley on Wednesday when it identified radioactive tritium in two test wells about 25 feet below the ground, said Dennis Madison, a utility vice president who oversees the plant. Workers guided by ground-penetrating radar were planning to dig Friday to identify the source of the leak….   http://www.forbes.com/feeds/ap/2011/09/30/business-multiutilities-us-plant-hatch-leak-georgia_8710682.html

USA Republicans push for nuclear loans, but attack solar ones

GOP senator: Energy Dept. dragging feet on uranium plant loan guarantee,THE HILL, By Ben Geman – 09/30/11 Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) is pressing the Energy Department to approve a long-sought loan guarantee for an Ohio uranium-enrichment plant amid planned layoffs and “demobilization” of the project if the financing agreement isn’t forthcoming.

USEC Inc. is seeking a conditional approval of its $2 billion loan-guarantee application to the Energy Department for the American Centrifuge Plant.

Portman’s comments come as Republicans are attacking the White House over the $535 million loan guarantee granted in 2009 to solar panel maker Solyndra, which collapsed and filed for bankruptcy several weeks ago.

But while the DOE loan-guarantee program is now under attack from many Republicans who say it exposes the folly of “green jobs” efforts, multiple GOP lawmakers have pushed DOE to provide financing for projects in their states through its various loan programs….http://thehill.com/blogs/e2-wire/677-e2-wire/184775-gop-senator-presses-energy-dept-to-speed-up-uranium-plant-loan-guarantee

USA government beholden to nuclear lobby

In Germany, where electoral realities have forced to the government to take an honest look at nuclear safety, market realities have delineated a path away from nuclear power and toward a renewable energy economy. In the US, where government is not only insulated from popular opinion but also beholden to corporate largess, elected officials, regulators and industry work hand-in-hand to perpetuate dangerous, expensive and inefficient technologies (while, on Capitol Hill, House Republicans vote to slash already threadbare programs meant to encourage renewable energy development).

In Post-Fukushima Reality, What Is the Future, and Who Is Winning It?, TruthOut, 28 September 2011 by: Gregg Levine, “…… nuclear power has never gotten off the ground in Australia for a rather basic reason: it is not supported by a majority of its people…..

What the public wants, however, (as some recent events in the US seem to indicate) is not always what the public gets. Also required is a mechanism for the electorate to impose their will. Continue reading →
