Renewables, energy efficiency Florida and Georgia’s cheaper options than nuclear

Why Go Nuclear When Efficiency, Renewables Fit the Bill? UK IB Times.com 09 October 2011, What’s the likely result if the more than 20 applications for new or expanded nuclear plants are approved by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission? That’s the question addressed in the report, “Big Risks, Better Alternatives,” by Synapse Energy Economics on behalf of the Union of Concerned Scientists.
The main thesis of the report is that forecasts for energy demand growth in the U.S. are now much lower than they were when these projects were initially proposed.
The report focuses on two proposed nuclear projects in Florida and Georgia, states which rank among the worst in the nation in energy efficiency, according to the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE). If either state were to pursue even modest efficiency goals, peak load energy levels could remain below those of 2006. Continue reading
Questions on the huge costs likely for consumers in effort to fix nuclear plant
the total cost of fixing the plant and buying electricity from someone else that the nuke plant should be generating? About $2.5 billion. Progress Energy’s Florida customers will pay hundreds of millions of dollars of that bill…..
Honey, I broke the nuclear power plant, Tampa Bay.com By Robert Trigaux, Times Business Columnist , October 11, 2011 If you missed staff writer Ivan Penn’s investigative piece in Sunday’ St. Petersburg Times, you need to go back and read it. Carefully. (You can find it online at this address: http://tinyurl.com/3u96hk2.) It’s about a misguided decision by Progress Energy to try to repair its one and only nuclear power plant in Florida. Radioactive leak in US National Laboratory
National Lab in NY Halts Some Work After Leak, ABC News, By FRANK ELTMAN Associated Press GARDEN CITY, N.Y. October 10, 2011 (AP) A sealed device used to check whether radiation detectors are working properly at Brookhaven National Laboratory leaked a small amount of radioactivity last month, lab authorities said. There was no threat to public health or the environment, but the lab has halted some operations while it investigates.
The radioactivity was later found on two employees, in a parking lot and private vehicle, and in one of the facility’s buildings, the lab said. The lab is reviewing policies, procedures and training programs.
“Even the leak of a small amount of radiation is unacceptable,” George Goode, assistant director for environmental safety and health at the lab on eastern Long Island, said Monday. “We are treating this very seriously.” Continue reading
USA puts the pressure on India to buy US nuclear reactors
US puts onus on India for implementation of nuclear deal, Economic Times 9 OCT, 2011, WASHINGTON: Putting the onus on India, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton today said the US has made clear the steps New Delhi needs to take “to allow us to move forward” on implementation of bilateral civilnuclear deal.
“We remain fully committed to expanding the civil nuclear cooperation with India and have made clear the steps that India needs to take to allow us to move forward,” she told PTI when asked if India’s nuclear liability bill was an irritant in the bilateral relations. …
India’s liability regime has been a bone of contention between it and many of its nuclear partners, including the US, which have expressed reservations about some aspects of the domestic law that they fear will impose huge penalty on foreign suppliers in case of nuclear accidents.
However, Indian officials have maintained that the law was in accordance with international standards but India was ready to allay any apprehension in this regard. …

Sympathy with advocates of nuclear moratorium, from NRC chief
US Nuclear Regulator Sympathizes With Moratorium Advocates, Fox Business By Ryan Tracy October 05, 2011 WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)– The top U.S. nuclear watchdog said Wednesday that he sympathized with the views of groups who argue the U.S. should stop moving forward with plans for new nuclear-power plants until it can implement lessons from Japan’s nuclear crisis earlier this year.
“There are strong arguments on both sides about putting [in place] a moratorium,” Nuclear Regulatory Commission Chairman Gregory Jaczko said during a public discussion about the Japan incident at the National Press Club.
Jaczko noted that, collectively, the five-member commission has decided to move forward with licensing new reactors and re-licensing existing ones as it reviews the Japan incident. Jaczko didn’t dispute that course outright, but said one process should inform the other. “What I feel personally is that I think these processes can’t be independent,” he said….http://www.foxbusiness.com/industries/2011/10/05/us-nuclear-regulator-sympathizes-with-moratorium-advocates/
Generator failures hit 4 U.S. nuclear plants
4 generator failures hit US nuclear plants, Kake County News Sun, By RAY HENRY Associated Press October 9, 2011 ATLANTA — Four generators that power emergency systems at nuclear plants have failed when needed since April, an unusual cluster that has attracted the attention of federal inspectors and could prompt the industry to re-examine its maintenance plans.
None of these failures has threatened the public. But the diesel generators serve the crucial function of supplying electricity to cooling systems that prevent a nuclear plant’s hot, radioactive fuel from overheating, melting and potentially releasing radiation into the environment. 8,ooo petitioners call for closure of USA’s Fukushima style nuclear plants
Petitioners Fight for Suspension of Fukushima-Style Nuclear Plants, Barnegat Ocean Acres Patch Oyster Creek Generating Station is among the 21 reactors that more than 8,000 petitioners are asking the NRC to shutdown By Elaine Piniat, 7 Oct 11, Petitioners urged the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to immediately suspend all U.S. nuclear plants with the same type of reactor as the plant in Fukushima, Japan during a public hearing today.
“This appeal is for human sensibility, moral responsibility and due process,” said Paul Gunter, Director of the Reactor Oversight Project for Beyond Nuclear. “Fukushima tragically demonstrates that the Mark 1 containment liability is a deceptive falsehood, a breach of contract to both the NRC and public health and safety.” Continue reading
USA subsidies for renewable energy: the facts

The Truth About Renewable Subsidies, the Motley fool, By Travis Hoium , October 6, 2011 The headlines will tell you that subsidies for renewable energy are outrageously high and like throwing money down the drain. But outside of some poor decisions (ahem, Solyndra), subsidies for renewable energy have been effective at lowering costs and require very little money from the government.
When you compare renewable subsidies to the growth stages of oil and gas, coal, nuclear energy, and biofuels, it becomes apparent that we’re nowhere near the support we gave to those energy sources. In a study done by Nancy Pfund and Ben Healey for DBL Investors (link opens PDF), some interesting statistics emerge. Continue reading

Solar power could solve Texas’ electricity problems
The fastest way to shore up the Texas electrical grid is with home-generated solar electricity….
The real advantage to solar power is that it can be added to the grid as it is installed — in a matter of weeks or months. Solar power would not require water for cooling and would not harm the environment.
Solar power could fill energy needs, use less water, Standard Times San Angelo, Larry Payne, October 5, 2011 An editorial in the Texas Co-op Magazine says Texas came close to electrical shutdown on two occasions this year. The first was in February when we had an abnormal cold spell. The second was during the record-setting hot spell in August when all air-conditioners were running 24/7. The article goes on to say that the drought has made the problem worse, causing some plants to be hobbled by lack of water to cool their turbines.
Current Texas energy plans call for two new nuclear plants and a coal-fired plant to be built in South Texas near Bay City. These plants cost billions, are bad for the environment and take years to get on line. They also will require massive amounts of cooling water and that would most likely need to come from the Highland Lakes via the Colorado River. Continue reading
