Exorbitant cost of nuclear power

The wider lessons from nuclear power cost inflation SCITIZEN (UK) 26 Oct, 2009  “……………. the full costs of nuclear technology are probably well above today’s wholesale electricity prices. We may well need nuclear power but we are going to pay heavily for it. The government’s optimistic noises from 2006 to the middle of this year about the commercial viability of nuclear power have turned out to be wrong…………………. Continue reading

UK: expensive problem of aging nuclear industry

Nuclear industry: Crumbling stores, leaky plants and the dangers of old age Guardian, by Terry Macalister 20 October 2009

Dealing with the problems of old age lies at the heart of the nuclear industry’s challenge to convince the public of its safety: leaky power plants, crumbling waste stores nearing the end of their lives and overworked inspectors who do not have the time to assess properly the next generation of power stations. BBC News 23 September 2009
BRITISH PRIME MINISTER GORDON BROWN

“……………Britain will insist that the onus on non-nuclear states is that, in future, it is for them to prove they are not developing nuclear weapons.

Second, Britain will offer civil nuclear power to non nuclear states ready to renounce any plans for nuclear weapons: helping non-nuclear states acquire what President Eisenhower so memorably called “atoms for peace.”

Court finds depleted uranium caused soldier’s cancer

Soldier’s cancer linked to Gulf War, inquest

A report is to be sent to the Defence Secretary after an inquest jury found a former soldier’s cancer was caused by service during the 1991 Gulf War.

Telegraph.co.uk By Thomas Harding, Defence Correspondent
10 Sep 2009
The death of Stuart Dyson, a 39-year-old former soldier, from a rare from of cancer was caused by his exposure to depleted uranium used in military munitions, an inquest jury ruled.

The jury heard that Mr Dyson, a lance corporal in the Royal Pioneer Corps, cleaned tanks after the first Gulf War during a five-month deployment to the war zone.

His widow Elaine told the hearing that her husband’s health had deteriorated after he left the Army in 1992 and that he was diagnosed with colon cancer, which spread to his liver and spleen, in 2007.

Mrs Dysion, 41, said her husband, from Brownhills, West Midlands, had been “convinced” before his death that his cancer was linked to his service in the Gulf.

After the verdict was returned at Smethwick Council House, Black Country Coroner Robin Balmain said he intended to send a report on the death to the Secretary of State for Defence.

UK Nuclear power is the last straw

Nuclear power is the last straw
The Guardian, Professor David Elliott 9 September 2009
Nuclear power s not the answer to climate change (Guilty greens admit they could do more, 2 September). Indeed it could well undermine the development of the real solutions – energy efficiency and renewable energy. And yet the Labour government has moved from a position of supporting a programme of replacing older nuclear plants to one of a radical expansion, with talk of a UK nuclear contribution of 35-40% “beyond 2030″…………………..

The new policies on nuclear will, I believe, lead to major long-term global security problems. The policies could also undermine energy security and environmental sustainability, since money, manpower and other resources will be diverted away from renewables and energy efficiency.

Sellafield nuclear waste: Cumbrian Council doesn’t want it

(UK) Nuclear waste sites set for thumbs down

Charlie,  The Whitehaven News 20 August 09

Why do Sellafield want to store their waste in other peoples back yards? If it safe to be stored at Lillyhall then why not dig a big hole on the site of the old reactors? If waste is contained within a defined site it will not give surprises to future generations when the paperwork has been mislaid. This is proved by the problems over what is stored at Drigg. If we can’t trust them to keep track of dangerous waste for fifty years how can we expect them to know what is buried in hundreds of years to come.

The Whitehaven News by Alan Irving 20 August 09

TWO local sites earmarked for radioactive waste disposal are set to get the thumbs down from Cumbria County Council even though one – at Lillyhall – has already taken small amounts.

Cabinet councillors next week are expected to approve a recommendation that the low level radioactive waste is kept at Sellafield rather than sent to Keekle Head or Lillyhall…………

……………..yesterday Councillor  Knowles said: “Sellafield waste should be dealt with at Sellafield. What we don’t want is a proliferation of radioactive waste, it should not be put in holes around West Cumbria and imposed on people.” At Keekle Head, French company subsidiary Endecom is already drilling boreholes to see whether it will be suitable. It also has an agreement to buy the derelict 173-acre site……………………

Consultations on the national strategy to manage future arisings of waste will close on September 11. Cabinet members will consider a county council response on the lines that “LLW produced at Sellafield should be disposed of near to Sellafield and should not be dispersed in sites further afield in West Cumbria.”

Nuclear decommissioning: the problem that won’t go away

“…………………………IT IS A sprawling landscape of chimneys, storage ponds filled with nuclear waste and radioactive buildings awaiting demolition. The UK’s Thorpe nuclear-processing plant at Sellafield – nestled somewhat incongruously among the picturesque hills of Cumbria, northern England – is unlikely ever to become a tourist attraction, despite its fame.

For decades, Sellafield has been officially the most hazardous building in western Europe (according to the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority). And disposing safely of its crumbling, highly radioactive edifices, its hastily dumped reactor parts and decaying fuel rods is a slow and painstaking job that will probably ensure Sellafield holds the same dubious accolade for decades more…………..http://www.petroleum-economist.com/default.asp?Page=14&PUB=46&SID=721393&ISS=25450

No coal, no nuclear, only renewable energy for Scotland by 2030?

energy-methods-1

Red, Green and Blue by Mridul Chadha

July 15th, 2009

According to a new study, Scotland could shut down all its coal and nuclear power plants in the next 20 years and fulfill all its energy needs using renewable sources. The study commissioned by a consortium of environmental groups and conducted by an independent engineering consultant will soon be presented to the Scottish government. The study hold significant importance as the government has set ambitious goals for cutting carbon emissions and switching to renewable energy sources for power generation. The research studies and evaluates five different scenarios to predict the energy demand and generation trends over the next 20 years……………………… The report is revolutionary as even the worst case scenario (Scenario One) would mean a significant supply (64 percent) of electricity coming from renewable sources. With additional tools of energy efficiency and targeted financial help for small and micro scale energy generation, Scotland would be able to generate a huge power surplus.

At a time when the world leaders are struggling to even promise significant emission cuts, Scottish government’s continuous efforts to promote renewable energy and cut carbon emissions to meet the highly ambitious goals is commendable.
