A win for nature, as jellyfish shut down nuclear power plant

salp-like-jellyfushJellyfish Invasion Forces EON to Shut Down Swedish Nuclear Plant Bloomberg, By Julia Mengewein – Sep 30, 2013   EON SE shut down Sweden’s biggest nuclear power plant after a swarm of jellyfish made its way into a cooling water inlet at the reactor on the Baltic coast.

The 1,400 megawatt Oskarshamn-3 unit, located about 340 kilometers (211 miles) south ofStockholm, accounts for 5 percent of Sweden’s power supply, Anders Oesterberg, a spokesman for EON, said by e-mail today.

“This situation is caused by a huge amount of jellyfish, just one is definitely not enough to cause problems,” Oesterberg said from Oskarshamn, Sweden. “The last time this happened was in August 2005, when we had to shut down Oskarshamn-1 because of a jellyfish invasion.”…. http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-09-30/jellyfish-invasion-forces-eon-to-shut-down-swedish-nuclear-plant.html

Sweden’s Social Democrats call for scrapping of nuclear power

Scrap nuclear power in Sweden: Social Democrat The Local 11 Sep 2013  A leading Social Democrat has emphasized her party’s wish to abolish nuclear power in Sweden in favour of greener alternatives, a move critics say would be “devastating” for the Swedish industrial sector.

“We think that nuclear power should be abolished and replaced with renewable energy sources,” Magdalena Andersson, economic policy spokesperson for theSocial Democrats told Swedish business daily Dagens Industri (DI).

Party leader Stefan Löfven was previously a strong supporter of nuclear power in his role as chairman of the IF Metall trade union. However, since becoming the leader of the opposition last year, Löfven has changed his stance on the issue. …… http://www.thelocal.se/50186/20130911/

In an October 2012 letter to US Attorney General Eric Holder, they asked the Department of Justice to give its word that Assange will not be extradited, subject to indefinite detention or prosecution under the Espionage Act for the activities of WikiLeaks, but with no response, he and his Swedish accusers remain in legal limbo, calling into question whether Assange’s civil liberties and the women’s right to take their accusations through the criminal justice process can both be upheld. Sweden: 2 aging nuclear reactors shutdown after failing safety tests

flag-SwedenBackup power problems put two Swedish reactors on ice – and cast an unpleasant light on age, Bellona, 18 Dec 12 Safety concerns over backup diesel power generators have forced the closure of two of the three reactors in operation at Sweden’s Oskarshamn nuclear power plant after safety tests revealed problems with one of the generators, which failed to start within specified time parameters. Charles Digges, 17/12-2012

Diesel generators are a critical failsafe against loss of coolant during a catastrophic reactor accident, as bitterly illustrated by Fukushima, where a tsunami knocked out back-up and diesel generators, resulting in a triple meltdown.

The shutdown of the reactors comes as unwelcome news to OKG, the utility that runs the plant as Sweden marshals its energy resources with the onset of the Scandinavian country’s coldest months yet to come.

Bellona general manager and nuclear physicist Nils Bøhmer said the discoveries “show that Sweden’s ageing nuclear industry is coming to a point where it can no longer reliably supply power.”….. http://www.bellona.org/articles/articles_2012/oskar_1_2

Sweden – growing opposition to nuclear energy

The proportion in favour of expanding nuclear power resources in Sweden or replacing existing ones amounted to 35 percent. The survey interviewed 1,500 people during the autumn of 2011 with the full results expected in June 2012. The Swedish public has long been deeply divided regarding the nuclear power issue…. http://www.thelocal.se/40532/20120428/

Complicated nuclear politics in Sweden

Political quarrel about uranium mining, Stockholm News, MATS ÖHLÉN 1 Feb 12A rather peculiar situation has emerged in the Swedish Riksdag. Despite the fact that the Centre Party is clearly in favour of prohibiting uranium mining in Sweden, it’s about to vote down such a
proposal from the Greens. The reason is that the Centre Party is loyal with its coalition parties in the governing four-party alliance.

The Greens have earlier proposed a prohibition in the Riksdag but was voted down by among else the Centre Party. In a new attempt to get support for the proposal, the Greens have now reformulated their proposal exactly as the Centre Party does in it’s party congress decision in the issue.

After the initial preparation of the issue in the parliamentary Committee of Industry in Trade, it was clear that the Centre Party will vote against the proposal also this time. This according to the chief whip of the Centre Party group in Riksdag Anders W. Jonsson.

“If the Centre Party would vote in favour of the Green’s proposal, it would seriously damage our possibilities to convince our coalition parties in the government offices to present such a proposal”, Jonsson says to public broadcaster Sveriges Radio (SR)…..

Lise Nordin the economic spokesperson for the Greens is very critical towards the Centre Party. “The Centre Party choose power before the environment. Now they have the chance to decide that all threatened areas finally get a closure in this issue. But when it comes to it in the RIksdag, the Centre Party doesn’t stand up for the ideas which it claims to represent”, Lise Nordin says to SR. http://www.stockholmnews.com/more.aspx?NID=8356

Electromagnetic radiation from cell phones linked to brain cancer

Christina Macpherson's websites & blogs

This website is concerned with the nuclear industry, and the proven danger of cancer-causing ionising radiation.

The story is not the same for other types of radiation. Therefore we don’t generaly cover these.  However, that doesn’t prove them safe.  therefore, we should not ignore information on electromagnetic radiation, which might also have its risks. – Christina Macpherson

Handl’s hobby was hardly a secret. He published highly-detailed updates about his atomic ambitions on a personal blog, including a small meltdown Handl had created on his kitchen stove.Long after launching the project, it dawned on Handl that maybe his experiments were not legal. To find out, he asked Sweden’s Radiation Authority for advice.
