Balpakram National Park saved from uranium mining
Uranium mining blocked,The Telegraph – Calcutta (Kolkata), New Delhi, May 14: A national panel of wildlife experts today rejected a proposal from the department of atomic energy for uranium exploration on the Rongcheng plateau in Meghalaya’s South Garo Hills.The standing committee of the National Board of Wildlife decided to reject the proposal for exploratory drilling in view of the sentiments of the local people and representations from civil society groups, the environment ministry said.The Rongcheng plateau falls in the Balpakram National Park, home to elephants, black bear, leopards, deer and the red panda, one of the rarest animals in the world.Several green groups and NGOs have campaigned against a proposal for exploratory drilling, arguing that it would harm the bio-diversity in the park.

North Korea’s nuclear fusion not likely to be for real
North Korea nuclear claim met with skepticism, THIS JUST IN, May 12th, 2010 North Korea announced Wednesday that its scientists had created a nuclear fusion reaction – a claim nuclear experts quickly cast doubt on. “Nobody in the world has been able to sustain a controlled nuclear fusion reaction, the ultimate goal of nuclear technology,” said Dan Pinkston, head of the Seoul office of the International Crisis Group. “I don’t think the North Koreans are going to start … putting nuclear power vendors around the world out of business any time soon.”
Nuclear fusion is the same process that fuels stars, but has never been sustained in the laboratory by any nation, much less one of the poorest nations on earth.

Nuclear capable missiles tested by Pakistan
Pakistan Tests Nuclear-Capable Missiles, NTI: 10 May 2010, Pakistan on Saturday carried out a successful test launches of two nuclear-capable ballistic missiles, the Associated Press reported (see GSN, March 12).The Ghaznavi missile has a range of 180 miles and the Shaheen 1 missile can travel as far as 400 miles, enabling it to strike New Delhi, the capital of Pakistan’s nuclear-armed rival India. Both missiles can be loaded with conventional and nuclear warheads.

The facility is expected to be built at a cost of CNY20bn (US$2.93bn) and have an installed capacity of 1.25GW, covering an area of 240km2.The group has also announced it has signed an agreement to install 800MW of wind turbines in Yuxi City, in the southwestern province of Yunnan, at a cost of CNY8bn (US$1.2bn).
