Damage to bone marrow through ionising radiation

Radiation victims continue to be critical, The Hindu :, Staff Reporter , NEW DELHI, April 11, 2010 Doctors suspect extensive damage to bone marrow. The condition of all six persons exposed to radioactive material at a scrap market in the Capital’s Mayapuri area continued to be highly critical on Saturday with doctors suspecting extensive damage to their bone marrow, making them severely susceptible to infections.Deepak Jain, who is admitted to Indraprashtha Apollo Hospital, is reported to be “very critical” and his treatment is being managed in consultation with senior Bhabha Atomic Research Centre officials.

More radiation victims feared in India

Radiation illnesses need special hospital treatment

Hospitals not equipped to tackle radiation, The Times of India, Risha Chitlangia, TNN, Apr 10, 2010, NEW DELHI: The incident of radiation exposure in the capital has brought to light the city’s lack of preparedness in dealing with any such incident. Not many hospitals in the city are equipped or their staff trained to deal with patients of radiation exposure, nor do they have a special decontamination room as per the National Disaster Management Authority’s (NDMA) guidelines. Experts also point out that there is no central command that can guide hospitals and the police in dealing with this kind of emergency….

Burn injuries from radioactive scrap metal

Radiation leak injures five in Delhi scrap shop EMOIZ.COM 10 April 2010, NEW DELHI: Five persons were admitted in a local hospital with burn injuries and other ailments after continuous exposure to radiation at a scrap dealers shop in West Delhi.A 1-kilometre radius around the shop has been cordoned off as a precautionary measure, a senior officer said.

According to the officer, the five victims slept at the scrap dealers shop, where some radioactive material, reportedly medical waste equipment, was dumped some five days ago in West Delhi.

According to officials, skin of two men had turned black due to exposure to the radioactive material all five victims have burn injuries and rashes on their bodies.

Iran’s Disarmament Conference to be Attended by India

India snubs US, to attend nuclear meet in Iran | Rebel News, 04 April 2010, The Indian government will stand by its decision to take part in a nuclear meeting slated for mid-April in the Iranian capital, Tehran, in a move that is set to irk the US administration.According to a report published by The Hindustan Times on Sunday, the conference dubbed “Nuclear Energy for All, Nuclear Weapon for None” will be held on April 17 and 18 in Tehran.

The Indian Ambassador to Iran, Sanjay Singh, will represent India at the event, which will be attended by ministers, officials and nuclear experts from over 55 countries.
The decision to participate in the international nuclear disarmament meet comes while Washington continues its efforts to impose new sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program.

The Tehran event will be held only days after a nuclear security summit between US President Barak Obama and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in Washington on April 12 and 13.

Nuclear double-speak about peace

Nukes are “weapons of peace”, says Kakodkar Mumbai, fullstory Mar 19 (PTI) Nuclear weapons are “weapons of peace” which act as a deterrent, says former Chairman of Atomic Energy Commission Anil Kakodkar.

When India tested its nuclear bombs in 1974 and 1998, sanctions were imposed by many countries but for “us it became a real opportunity and our research and development today has reached a robust level” in some of the technologies, Kakodkar said at a function yesterday.

“The philosophical aspect of nuclear weapons can be peaceful and they act as a deterrent. So, I call them weapons of peace,” he said replying to questions posed by eminent science writer Bal Phondke and Dr A P Thatte, President of Vijnan Bharati, an NGO dedicated to science.
