Opposition to privatisation of UK’s nuclear weapons management

Faslane and Coulport nuclear weapons maintenance to be privatised – Polaris?
For Argyll.com  July 28, 2012   “….Privatisation of maintenance of nuclear weapons – no new notion
The privatisation of security which produced the inglorious G4S failure, undermined public confidence in the organisation of the ongoing 2012 Olympic Games in London. One would therefore have expected some gesture of consultation with the Scottish government and the Scottish people on any plan to privatise the maintenance of nuclear weapons here. Runaway costs of USA’s unnecessary B61 nuclear bomb project

The escalating cost of the B61 LEP adds to NNSA’s abysmal record of underestimating costs of nuclear weapons programs. It follows enormous budget overruns of the National Ignition Facility (NIF) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California,….

the U.S. should phase out its remaining non-strategic nuclear weapons, delay and redesign the B61 LEP, and focus its resources on maintaining the strategic nuclear weapons and
conventional forces that are actually needed

B61-12: NNSA’s Gold-Plated Nuclear Bomb Project, FAS Strategic Security Blog, . By Hans M. Kristensen, 26 July 12 Escalating cost estimates for the B61 Life- Extension Program threaten to make the new B61-12 bomb the most expensive ever.

The disclosure during yesterday’s Senate Appropriations Subcommittee hearing that the cost of the B61 Life Extension Program (LEP) is significantly greater that even the most recent cost overruns calls into question the ability of the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) to manage the program and should call into question the B61 LEP itself. Nuclear power and nuclear weapons proliferation

The report, Nuclear Famine: A Billion People at Risk − Global Impacts of Limited Nuclear War on Agriculture, Food Supplies, and Human Nutritio, is available here. Videos are posted on youtube − search ‘nuclear famine’.

Nuclear power & nuclear weapons – two sides of the same coin,  July 24, 2012 Green Left, By Jim Green  “……. The report on the catastrophic potential of nuclear warfare has important implications for the ongoing debate over nuclear power. Apologists for the nuclear industry trot out any number of furphies in their efforts to distance nuclear power from WMD proliferation, but the facts are in. There is a long history of ostensibly peaceful nuclear programs providing political cover and technical support for nuclear weapons programs − and an expansion of nuclear power can only exacerbate the problem.

Of the 10 nations to have produced nuclear weapons: Continue reading →

USA safer with fewer nuclear weapons say experts, and defense chief

Leading experts and military officials agree that the United States would be more secure with fewer nuclear weapons. A new report  chaired by Gen. James Cartwright, former Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, argues that the U.S. could reduce its arsenal to 900 total nuclear weapons.

Defense Hawk Says Cut the Nuclear Arsenal HUFFINGTON POST,  Benjamin LoehrkeSenior Policy Analyst, Ploughshares Fund. 24 July 12 A leading defense hawk took to the floor of the House of Representatives to argue that greater security in the 21st century means spending less on nuclear weapons. This could signal a turning point as leaders in Congress see the strategic and fiscal realities behind why the U.S. should reduce its nuclear arsenal.

Rep. Norman Dicks (D-WA) is a steadfast supporter of national defense. He is the Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Committee and has served on the Subcommittee on Defense for 34 years. He speaks forcefully — both in style and substance. Last week, he stood on the House floor to oppose a proposal on nuclear weapons. Continue reading →

Global famine would result from even a “limited” nuclear war

Nuclear power & nuclear weapons – two sides of the same coin, July 24, 2012 Green Left, By Jim Green A nuclear war using as few as 100 weapons would disrupt the global climate and agricultural production so severely that the lives of more than a billion people would be at risk, according to research findings released in April by International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War and its Australian affiliate, the Medical Association for Prevention of War. Nuclear Suppliers Group countries making more nuclear weapons

VIEW : Nuclear nexus in the NSG — Daily Times,  Momina Ashier, 25 July Shannon Kile, Senior Researcher of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) lately stated, “In spite of the world’s revived interest in disarmament efforts, none of the nuclear weapon-possessing states shows more than a rhetorical willingness to give up their nuclear arsenals just yet.

While the overall number of nuclear warheads may be decreasing, the long-term modernisation programmes underway in these states suggest that nuclear weapons are
still a currency of international status and power.” Continue reading →

USA sparking ‘missile envy’ with expanding missile defence system

The United States is spending about $10 billion a year to develop, test and deploy missile defences, which would include a European shield as part of a layered system. The defences would also include ship-based interceptors that could be deployed in the Middle East and
Asia-Pacific – for instance as a hedge against North Korea – plus ground-based missile interceptors in silos in Alaska and California.

Missile defences, however benign they appear to the side building them, always force others nations to improve and increase their offensive weapons,”

Missile shield may spark China nuclear upgrade-officer http://in.reuters.com/article/2012/07/18/china-usa-nuclear-idINDEE86H0EY20120718  By Fredrik Dahl VIENNA   Jul 19, 2012   (Reuters) – China may need to modernise its nuclear arsenal to respond to the destabilising effect of a planned U.S.-backed missile defence system, a senior Chinese military officer said on Wednesday. USA’s AirSea Battle (ASB) plan brings serious risks of nuclear weapons escalation

serious risks to this approach, including the danger of nuclear escalation if AirSea Battle is ever implemented in a shooting war with China.

Three Paths to Nuclear Escalation with China The National Interest, Joshua Rovner | July 19, 2012 The U.S. military has enjoyed extraordinary freedom of maneuver since the end of the Cold War. The fall of the Soviet Union meant that no one else was left to seriously challenge the United States when it decided to act abroad. Today, however, strategists worry that U.S. rivals are developing weapons that will make it difficult or impossible to gain access to contested areas. Dealing with the so-called “anti-access” problem has become a central task for civilian and military planners—and something close to an obsession for the navy.
One popular solution is AirSea Battle (ASB). Continue reading →

Rid world of nuclear tests Observer and Eccentric, Fern Katz, 9 July,  “….July 16 marks the 67th anniversary of the first nuclear test explosion in New Mexico, commonly known as “Trinity.” In the years that followed, the United States conducted 1,030 nuclear test explosions — more than any other country in the world.

Radioactive fallout from nuclear testing has negatively impacted health all across America and the globe. A National Cancer Institute study showed that every county in the lower 48 states received some amount of fallout from nuclear tests.

With the negative effects that come from nuclear test explosions, how can our nation’s leaders think that holding open the option of ever conducting these tests again is a good idea? Continue reading →
