USA business as usual, and by the way, Duck and Cover
Here we are back in December of 2010. Iran is enriching uranium. So is North Korea. China has 10,000 missiles aimed at Taiwan, whom we must protect and defend. Now the government is presenting us with detailed advice on surviving nuclear explosions. But they remind us that we have no need for concern. It’s “Business as usual”. Rumor has it that several Senators have refused to discuss the matter until bills are added to promote online shopping for flashlights and batteries, and the elimination of soda pop for poor people — let them drink water!
The Government Wants Us to “Duck and Cover.” – Blogcritics Culture, John Lake 18 Dec 10, “Let us face without panic, the reality of our times.” So begins a widely viewed televised presentation prepared and aired to the public during the long remembered 1950s decade of concern; concern of a coming nuclear attack. (see video at Nuclear attack survivable if you stay inside, U.S. government says | Posted | National Post ) Continue reading

Chris Huhne’s hollow, wobbly, words on “no subsidy” for UK nuclear industry
In other words, nuclear will be eligible for any form of subsidy that applies to renewables or other low-carbon generation through tools such as carbon pricing or emissions trading….We will not rule out the Government providing support to industry… through the activities of the Office for Nuclear Development in taking forward the actions to facilitate the deployment of new nuclear power
“No subsidy for nuclear” 24dash.com, by Jonathon Porritt , December 10th, 2010 That’s the wording that permitted the Lib Dems to go along with the Tories’ pro-nuclear stance. That’s the wording that turned Chris Huhne from “serious sceptic” to compliant enthusiast. It sounds so simple, doesn’t it – “no subsidy”. Which bit of that do you not understand? But if the Trades’ Description Act applied to political pronouncements, Chris Huhne would find himself subject to prosecution for outright deception. Continue reading

Hillary Clinton in Australia faced no hard nuclear questions from a self-censored forum
Here, then, are the questions that weren’t asked of Hillary Clinton, but at least a couple of which should have been: lf the primary justification is ”regional security”, why should Australia agree to even greater military ties with the US when it will make us more of a potential target for terrorism?
Questions Hillary wasn’t asked on her date with Australia, Sydney Morning Herald, Hamish FordNovember 10, 2010 – “………Even closer military and political ties mark the latest hotting up of an old but seriously unequal love story….
..Throughout, no one challenged Clinton on the purpose or impact of her nation’s unprecedented global power. It beggars belief that your average room of youngish university folk wouldn’t contain at least some who were capable and willing of sterner stuff…. Continue reading

The Emperor’s New Nuclear Clothes
Washington’s resolute reaction to the shrinking renaissance affirms the brilliance of Hans Christian Anderson’s ending to his fable “The Emperor’s New Clothes”:
“But he has nothing on!” everybody shouted at last. And the emperor shivered, for it seemed to him that they were right; but he thought within himself, “I must go through with the procession.” And so he carried himself still more proudly, and the chamberlains walked along holding the train which wasn’t there at all.
Honey, I Shrunk the Renaissance: Nuclear Revival, Climate Change and Reality, CleanEnergy Footprints, by Peter Bradford, 15 Oct 10, “………Where have all the reactors gone? The 18 applications to build 27 new reactors that were on file at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission in January 2009 (with five more applications for seven units expected by the end of 2010) were hailed by a compliant press to constitute “a nuclear renaissance.” Continue reading

BHP: A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing? The Star, by Mark Taylor | 15 Oct 10 Why would BHP BHP CEO Marius Kloppers express support for a carbon tax? The mining industry has its fair share of climate skeptics. Geologists and model-based climatologists have very different views of the world. Does BHP stand to gain or lose from a carbon tax? Canadian advertising regulator rules against “emission free” nuclear power
Finally, someone in authority has caught up with the nuclear industry and its propaganda. The Advertising Standards Canada, the organisation which regulates the Canadian advertising industry, ruled earlier this year that claims of nuclear power being ‘emission free’ made in adverts by the Power Workers’ Union ‘were inaccurate, unsupported, and misleading’. The Union was told to remove its ads.
‘Emission free’ nuclear power is more greenwash Greenpeace International, 7 Oct 10, We’ve discussed before on Nuclear Reactio the nuclear industry’s attempts to greenwash nuclear power by rebranding it ‘clean’. It’s a description of this most contaminating of energy sources that nuclear boosters are pushing more and more in the debate about the future of nuclear power. Another term we’re starting to see more and more of is ‘emission free’, as in ‘nuclear power is an emission free energy source’. ……. Even institutions like the BBC have bought the industry spin.
