Nuclear power for Nigeria? just a bad joke
The idea of Nuclear plant operation in Nigeria is a joke, Segun Balogun interviews Doyin Olagbeg, September 11, 2011’ Doyin Olagbegi is a US based Nigerian and the convener of the Nigerian Million March.
Doyin Olagbeg “……….The date was Thursday February 3rd 2011. I read an article by i in a Nigerian newspaper titled “Government intensifies effort to generate power from nuclear sources.” I could not believe what I just read. As a nation we are not able to effectively manage a conventional power grid and, here we are “intensifying effort” at Nuclear power. This, to me, is a brazen “Bait and Switch” scheme, perpetrated to suction our money for the next 100 years…….
We are about to embark on another white elephant project, a very dangerous one for that matter.
All Nigerians should be mad too. Nuclear power is no child’s play. In the United States, no community wants such a project in their neighbourhood. It’s called a “NIMBY” (Not In My Back Yard) in the wake of the nuclear disaster in Japan due to earthquake. ….
All things considered, the idea of Nuclear plant operation in Nigeria is a joke like many other projects such as the Ajaokuta project, the refineries. Nigerians, we need to wake up, and stop this nuclear train idea before, it leaves the station. Otherwise, we’ve got another giant sucking “black hole” scheme coming…..
NASA hoping to overcome ionising radiation so people can live in space
My question is, who in their right mind would want to live in space, rather than on this beautiful, and less irradiated Earth? – Christina Macpherson
NASA Awards Space Radiobiology Research Grants,The Sacramento Bee, By NASA WASHINGTON, Sept. 9, 2011 — NASA is funding nine proposals from eight states to investigate space radiation’s effect on human explorers. The proposals from researchers in California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York and Texas have a total value of approximately $12 million.
The ground-based studies will work to better understand and mitigate risk of damage to the heart and central nervous system from cosmic rays. The studies also will assess cancer risks and how genetics affect space radiation risks.
“These studies will pave the way for new approaches to better prepare astronauts for living in space,” http://www.sacbee.com/2011/09/09/3897143/nasa-awards-space-radiobiology.html
Research to help atomic downwinders now perverted into pro nuclear spin
They [Pam Sykes, Bobby Scott etc] are the “radiation sceptics”, very much comparable to “climate change sceptics”. Their belief in “radiation hormesis” is comparable to “intelligent design” — as opposed to evolution.
Their common funding sources are nuclear energy agencies — in particular the USA Department of Energy (DOE)…..
After Fukushima: the rise of nuclear radiation denialists Independent Australia 22 Aug 11, After the Fukushima disaster, the nuclear industry has urgently redoubled its efforts to convince the world that nuclear radiation is safe. Now it seems they are trying to say that radiation is actually good for us. Noel Wauchope reports.
— In 2001, President Bill Clinton authorised funds to research the effects of radiation on the “downwinders” from the Nevada and Utah atomic bomb tests. The funds went to the Department of Energy, who designed the research project. They then allocated the project to Flinders University in South Australia, under the leadership of Professor Pam Sykes.
But the original intention of the research has taken a strangely perverted course. Pam Sykes has joined the proponents of “adaptive radiation” and “radiation hormesis” – the theory that “low level ionising radiation is good for you” It’s quite an old theory, but now, after Fukushima, it has suddenly become very useful to the nuclear and uranium lobbies…….. They say radiation is safe. Don’t believe it
John LaForge discusses the unbelievable: “The Obama administration, the EPA, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the FDA will be dismantling their emergency radiation monitoring.”…
Corporations influence Congress and the president through campaign contributions. PG&E will continue lobbying the public, stating how safe nuclear power is. No doubt they will use the argument about low doses of radiation being safe.
Safe radioactivity? Experts say no, Santa Maria Times, 19 Aug 11, James Murr, The nuclear industry has been telling us it is a clean and safe type of energy. In view of the problems still raging in Japan at the Fukushima plant, it is considered an uncontrolled disaster.
Nuclear engineers and physicists claim small doses are legal and cannot harm us. It was our political system, bought and paid for by corporate campaign contributions, that legalized small releases of radiation from power plants. Otherwise, nuclear power plants would not be able to operate. Continue reading
Soothing propaganda promotes uranium mining in Virginia
Uranium Safe to Eat With a Spoon!, OpEd News.com by David Swanson, 11 Aug 11, Carefully ignoring Fukushima, Los Alamos, Vermont, and Nebraska, a comforting new announcement informs us that “nuclear energy is safe.” A series of soothing television ads and videostells us that mining uranium in Virginia would produce jobs and protect us from scary foreigners.
Virginia newspapers carried an article from theAssociated Press this week that did not pretend to be anything but one-sided, reporting on the agenda of corporations that would profit from mining uranium while including no other views or any verified facts. The Washington Post did the very same thing. These articles are essentially press releases that have been tweaked. The online versions even include the videos.
We can expect even less actual news reporting than that (yes, less than nothing) to come through our televisions. But these ads hyping uranium mining as a job solution will be aired. And the television networks will consequently view the mining corporations as customers not to be needlessly offended or inconvenienced……
Thousands of years of danger, to provide what the uranium mining companies claim might be 65 years of uranium use. That seems like the kind of deal only a U.S. president could consider a bargain. Let’s hope Virginia still has more life left in it than Washington. http://www.opednews.com/articles/Uranium-Safe-to-Eat-With-a-by-David-Swanson-110809-895.html
USA Dept of Energy grants money to spin Nuclear as climate change solution
The goal is for the United States to use the nuclear industry to cut carbon emissions and create new green energy jobs……
DOE awards $1.09M grant to CSU nuclear energy project, coloradoan.com 10 Aug 11, A Colorado State University statistics professor’s nuclear energy modeling project has been awarded a $1.09 million federal grant, part of a program aimed at developing nuclear energy technology at universities across the country. UK and Japanese govts collude with nuclear industry to minimise Fukushima news
[the UK government] invited Westinghouse, Areva and EDF Energy, all pillars of nuclear power production, to contribute to government briefs and statements. “We need to all be working from the same material to get the message through to the media and the public,” ….Such spin and manipulation of information is likely to continue in the coming months as the industry struggles to recover.
(includes video)After Fukushima: the collusive nuclear industry fightback Independent Australia, 6 August 11, On the 66th anniversary of Hiroshima today, in a week whenrecord levels of radiation have been found at Fukushima, David McNeill looks at the way the nuclear industry has corruptly colluded with regulators in Japan and Britain to quieten valid public safety concerns about nuclear power. Thorium nuclear reactors not effective, not a viable technology
‘Even if thorium technology does progress to the point where it might be commercially viable, it will face the same problems as conventional nuclear: it is not renewable or sustainable and cannot effectively connect to smart grids. The technology is not tried and tested, and none of the main players is interested. Thorium reactors are no more than a distraction.’

Don’t believe the spin on thorium being a ‘greener’ nuclear option, The Ecologist, Eifion Rees, 23rd June, 2011 “………China, Russia, France and the US are also pursuing the technology, while India’s department of atomic energy and the UK’s Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council are jointly funding five UK research programmes into it.
There is a significant sticking point to the promotion of thorium as the ‘great green hope’ of clean energy production: it remains unproven on a commercial scale. While it has been around since the 1950s (and an experimental 10MW LFTR did run for five years during the 1960s at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the US, though using uranium and plutonium as fuel) it is still a next generation nuclear technology – theoretical. Collusion by government and industry to downplay Fukushima radiation report
the government is diluting real mortality rates of children by burying the expected death rates for children exposed in with statistics that are derived from the entire population…
Nuclear apologists will be quick to say this (criticism) is all hysteria and turn to their common talking points such as “show me one person who has become sick or has died from Fukushima radiation.” Even though it is well known it can take up to 20 years after radiation exposure to develop cancer, they stick to such cleverly constructed tricks which easily deceive the majority of the masses who are have not yet been equipped with the knowledge required to counter their propaganda.
Nuclear Radiation Survey: 1 in 20 Fukushima Children Will Develop Thyroid Cancer, The Intel Hub, By Alexander Higgins – Contributing Writer, July 5, 2011
Japan finally releases a nuclear radiation survey that reveals that 45% of Fukushima children had sustained thyroid radiation exposure by the end of March. Despite government attempts to downplay the survey results, the data shows that at least 1 in 20 children will develop thyroid cancer. Unfortunately, this is just the latest side show in the 3 ring circus being ran by our corporate dictators. Continue reading
Fukushima: How the nuclear industry, governments and media went into PR damage control right from the start
The emails show that the Fukushima “PR campaign” cover-up planning started hours after the catastrophe, specifically targeted nuclear disarmament human rights defenders, and aimed to protect industry’s plans for more nuclear facilities rather than protect human life……..Major news networks are owned by energy corporations, as only days ago, investigative journalist Wayne Madsen explained during a June 24th Russia Today interview …..
Scandalous collusion’: Gov’t, nuclear industry planned Fukushima cover-up, Government, nuclear industry covert media blackout, Examiner.com Deborah Dupre, Human Rights Examiner, July 1, 2011, Human rights to health of children and pregnant women, the most vulnerable to radiation, have been violated in what Greenpeace called ”scandalous collusion,” a planned Fukushima nuclear cover-up conducted by government and the multi-national nuclear industry according to leaked emails to the Guardian that it exposed Thursday. The emails show that the Fukushima “PR campaign” cover-up planning started hours after the catastrophe, specifically targeted nuclear disarmament human rights defenders, and aimed to protect industry’s plans for more nuclear facilities rather than protect human life.
For over three months, Japanese and American outrage about Fukushima disinformation and lack of aid for people at risk of Fukushima fall-out, has seemingly fallen on deaf ears. Gulf of Mexico coastal residents find the Fukushima scenario all too familiar, having experienced a similar intensive media blackout andprotection of BP rather than humans suffering for over a year. (La emergency summit fisher wife slams media black-out (video), Examiner, June 20, 2010)
The Guardian‘s leaked emails indicate that British government and industry possibly have had a hand to play in both Fukushima and Gulf Coast survivors’ misery. One implication of media black-outs result is that survivors gain little or no support otherwise forthcoming from people of goodwill.
“Internal emails seen by the Guardian show how the business and energy departments worked closely behind the scenes with the multinational companies EDF Energy, Areva and Westinghouse to try to ensure the [Fukushima] accident did not derail their plans for a new generation of nuclear stations in the UK,” theGuardian reports in its article, “Revealed: British government’s plan to play down Fukushima.”
Major news networks are owned by energy corporations, as only days ago, investigative journalist Wayne Madsen explained during a June 24th Russia Today interview …..
Indian scientists contradict nuclear lobby’s propaganda
Unlike the pro-nuclear propaganda that tries to project nuclear power as a scientifically-proven energy option that is both efficient and environment-friendly, there are scores of scientists who have been against nuclear energy but their voice got drowned in the clamor of powerful lobbyists,”
Scientists enroll students into anti-nuke lobby – The Times of India, 26 May,”……………….The scientists, gathered under the umbrella of Poromanu Shakti Birodhi Mancha or Anti-Nuclear Power Front, have already given a talk to students of La Martinere, Lakshmipat Singhania, Don Bosco, Mitra Institution and Loreto Day School. After the summer vacation, more talks are lined up in at least nine more schools in the city. Continue reading
Nuclear lobby’s comic book spin to Jaitapur villagers
AREVA, Cameco, and other nuclear companies have become skillful at targeting indigenous peoples with comic strip books and promotions. They’ve also used these tactics in schools – getting to unsophisticated people with cheerful, simplistic propaganda.
the comic narrates the story of Jagdishpur, a village that had been underdeveloped due to ignorance and superstition, but undergoes a transformation when a nuclear power plant is built there.
Comic relief for Jaitapur N-plant fears Hindustan Times, Mumbai, May 23, 2011 The Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) has turned to comic strips to dispel safety fears of villagers about atomic energy. The move by the Government-run nuclear plant operator is an attempt to address opposition by locals and activists to the planned nuclear power project in Jaitapur, Maharashtra and questions that may come up at sites of other proposed projects. The comic dwells on the benefits of atomic power Continue reading
UK’s “Renewable Energy Foundation” – a front for anti renewables lobby?
the charity is little more than a front for anti-wind lobbyists…….It would set an unwelcome precedent for a charitable organisation claiming to support renewable energy, to spend time campaigning against what is effectively the chief renewable technology in the UK. It raises issues about the organisation’s motives, as well as financial and reputational advantages of being a registered charity. There needs to be a much clearer sense of how REF fulfils its charitable purpose and lives up to its name…..The problem with the Renewable Energy Foundation is that their name is misleading. It suggests they are in favour of renewables when actually the opposite is true.
Will the real Renewable Energy Foundation please stand up? Guardian UK 20 May 11, The Renewable Energy Foundation says it is not against windfarms, but its critics disagree Will the real Renewable Energy Foundation please stand up? This is a question being asked with increasing intensity within the UK’s renewable energy sector. Continue reading
Why Japan’s nuclear hierarchy cannot be trusted about Fukushima disaster
Virtually any nuclear engineer connected with the industry he or she supports cannot be fully trusted right now to give us the full truth about Fukushima because the truth is simply too damaging to the nuclear industry and they know it. The attitude that the industry has, as well as the ugly reality that this same energy is tied to the economy which supports full on capitalism, must be scaled back Tokuhiro advised.
Interview with Akira Tokuhiro, Nuclear Engineer: Fukushima and the Mass Media HUFFINGTON POST, Vivian Norris, 19 May, “Only the mass media can put the kind of pressure on TEPCO and the Japanese government to bring about major change. This will cost at least 10 billion dollars if not 20-30 billion to clean up. It will take at least 10 years if not 20 and roughly 10,000 people working on the cleanup. The nuclear business is global. This needs an international effort to clean up Fukushima.”
— Nuclear Engineer Akira Tokuhiro
In an email today, Japanese born, U.S.-educated nuclear engineering professor Tokuhiro wrote the following: Continue reading
Childhood leakaemias near nuclear plants – NOT caused by “virus”
Across Europe a number of studies have reported increased rates of childhood leukaemia around other nuclear facilities. In 1992, the German Childhood Cancer Registry found a statistically significant increased incidence rate for leukaemias among children below five years of age within the 5-km-zone around nuclear sites. A second study was published in 1997, and again found increased childhood leukaemias near nuclear plants….
Further analysis of the KiKK study by the German Expert Group went on to state that childhood cancer near to nuclear power plant sites was actually underestimated by the KiKK researchers – and so the risks are considerably above those reported.
Why UK nuclear power plants may cause childhood cancer and leukaemia, The Ecologist, Dr Paul Dorfman, 16th May, 2011You won’t hear the UK government admit it but after decades of research there is now evidence of real excesses of childhood cancer and leukaemia near some nuclear facilities, argues Dr Paul Dorfman Continue reading
