Yucca Mt scientifically unsuitable for nuclear waste dump
in the last three decades 1the Energy Department studied Yucca Mountain and simply couldn’t make the plan work. There are a multitude of scientific, technical and safety issues with Yucca Mountain, which is a porous volcanic ridge in an area prone to earthquakes. The Energy Department had to keep rewriting its plans and requirements to try to make it look like Yucca Mountain was suitable……Nevada was chosen because the state [back then] didn’t have any political power.
More Yucca hypocrisy, Las Vegas Sun, Republicans continue to push a foolish plan that is unsafe and expensive, May 15, 2011 Republicans in Congress this past week continued their shameful crusade to turn Nevada into a nuclear waste repository by trumpeting a report that they say shows “political opposition” is the key obstacle toward building a Yucca Mountain repository. Financial and security problems in USA’s foreign owned uranium mines
Foes Highlight Companies’ Foreign Ownership in Bids to Halt Uranium Mining, New York Times, By MANUEL QUINONES, 4 may 11, Environmentalists trying to halt U.S. uranium projects are emphasizing the foreign ownership of mining companies. A key issue: Companies that mine uranium and other hardrock minerals do not pay royalties to the U.S. government. Several companies that mine or are seeking permits to mine U.S. uranium are based in Canada.
Those companies are “able to take this uranium off of U.S. soil without paying taxpayer compensations,” said Jane Danowitz, public lands director for the Pew Environment Group.
“It just goes to show,” Danowitz said, “that this is an issue that should raise concerns beyond environmental impacts.” Among the concerns being raised about foreign ownership of uranium companies is that U.S. uranium could end up in hostile hands. Republican lawmakers last year raised alarms over the Russian-owned company ARMZ taking control from Canadian interests of Uranium One Inc., which has significant U.S. operations.
“This transaction would give the Russian government control over a sizable portion of America’s uranium production capacity,” Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) told President Obama in a letter last December. “As you know, Russia has a disturbing record of supporting nuclear programs in countries that are openly hostile to the United States.”….. http://www.nytimes.com/gwire/2011/05/04/04greenwire-foes-highlight-companies-foreign-ownership-in-90317.html

German government under pressure from huge anti nuclear rallies

Demonstrators in Germany Demand End of Nuclear Power, New York Times, By JUDY DEMPSEY, April 25, 2011 BERLIN — An estimated 120,000 people demonstrated across Germany on Monday, protest organizers said, demanding an end to nuclear power and increasing pressure on Chancellor Angela Merkel’s government to speed up the closing of the country’s 17 nuclear plants.
Demonstrations that take place each year over the Easter holidays have tended in the past to be pacifist, for instance, calling for the end of the war in Afghanistan. But this year, because of the 25th anniversary of the nuclear accident at the Chernobyl plant in Ukraine, in addition the nuclear crisis at the Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan, the rallying theme was nuclear power.
Some of the biggest protests took place in the western state of Lower Saxony, where, according to the organizer’s spokesman, Peter Dickel, more than 20,000 demonstrators gathered near the Grohnde nuclear plant.
In the northern state of Schleswig-Holstein, 17,000 protested at the Krümmel nuclear plant, Mr. Dickel said.
In Bavaria, which has three nuclear plants, more than 15,000 people gathered near the Grafenrheinfeld power plant and thousands of others marched toward the Isar 1 and Isar 2 plants. “We are many, we will be more and we will not keep quiet until the last nuclear power plant is shut,” said Martin Heilig, an organizer of the demonstrations there…….http://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/26/world/europe/26iht-germany26.html
