People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy details faults in Kudankulam report

Activists dub report on Kudankulam as flawed, THE HINDU 27 Nov 11  Rebuttal by People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy soon The People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE) on Sunday slammed the report of the Government-appointed expert committee on Kudankulam as being extremely flawed, premised on obsolete demographic data and opaque on the risks from sub-volcanic activity near the site or health impact on the local population.

The PMANE also released a letter to Chief Minister Jayalalithaa seeking her intervention in scrapping the project.

In the letter to the Chief Minister–copies of which were circulated to media – PMANE leaders flayed the Expert Group for ignoring valid questions on liability and declining to give specific or scientific information on nuclear waste or the fresh water needs of the KKNPP. The Expert Group had not talked to any section of the public nor tried to allay the fears and concerns of the people.

“Campaign of canards” The letter also took exception to the Central government’s “campaign of canards” about the anti-nuke activists receiving foreign funds, support and guidance to drive a wedge in the movement and sought to reassure the Chief Minister that there was not an iota of truth in these charges. Millions of fishermen and farmers would be affected by India’s nuclear power plans

Both areas support millions of subsistence fishing and farming families who, faced with the forced acquisition of their land and loss of livelihoods, pose a formidable opposition to a government sensitive to the loss of a core constituency.

Dr (Anil) Kakodkar projected that India would be generating 650,000MW of nuclear power by 2050. That’s 650 1000MW nuclear reactors,” he says. “You would almost need to evict the entire fishermen population of India.”……..

Heat rises beyond the smog in India  AMANDA HODGE, SOUTH ASIA CORRESPONDENT : The Australian November 26, 2011 “….. In India, where its nuclear capability has traditionally stirred great national pride, Fukushima gave meaning and pictures to environmentalists’ warnings. “People are realising that if something like this can happen in Japan, where everything runs on time, it can definitely happen here,” Greenpeace India nuclear spokeswoman Karuna Raina says.

India’s anti-nuclear fervour is centred on two huge atomic energy projects: one built and ready to go in Koodankulam in southern Tamil Nadu, the other mooted for Jaitapur on the fertile coast of Maharashtra. Continue reading →

Indian political party objecting to weakening of Nuclear Liability Law

BJP objects to govt rules on nuclear commerce Times of India TNN | Nov 25, 2011,  NEW DELHI: BJP plans to object to the rules of nuclear commerce announced by the government recently on the ground that limits on compensation and a cut-off for claims violated the basic provisions of the civil liability for nuclear damage act.

The rules have to be tabled in Parliament and BJP will argue that the right to recourse offered to operators of nuclear power plants under section 17 was being wrongfully circumscribed by the rules in order to provide relief to US suppliers.

The rules state that there will be a period of limitation in terms of the initial liability and a cap will be imposed on the compensation that can be sought. …….

Demand that nuclear power be an issue in Taiwan’s elections

Groups push for inclusion of nuclear issue in presidential debates Central News Agency    Taipei, Nov. 24 (CNA) Environmentalists, regular members of the public and scholars gathered Thursday to ask presidential candidates to address the issue of a nuclear-free homeland during the upcoming televised debates ahead of the 2012 presidential election. To get a clear and open message from the candidates is important, according to Yilan Charlie Chen Foundation, the organizer of a platform that promotes discussion on nuclear issues. There has been too much flip-flopping on the commitment to scrapping construction of the country’s fourth nuclear power plant, the foundation stated.

“We want candidates representing the ruling Kuomintang and opposition Democratic Progressive Party and minor opposition People First Party to prove they are serious about our concerns,” said foundation chairman Charlie Chen. Other organizations at the event — including the Yenliao Anti-Nuclear Self-Help Association, Taiwan Environmental Protection Union, Green Citizens’ Action Alliance — proposed that the debates should be held in one of the country’s nuclear power plants, so candidates can “face the fear themselves.” The issues of whether to continue building Taiwan’s fourth nuclear power plant, how to handle nuclear waste disposal and phase out nuclear power in the future have been hotly debated in the run-up to the Jan. 14 presidential election.

Three televised debates have been scheduled for Dec. 3, Dec. 10 and Dec. 17. (By Lee Hsin-Yin) http://www.taiwannews.com.tw/etn/news_content.php?id=1768269

South Africa’s huge nuclear power tender, but will there be graft?

R1tn nuclear tender raises graft fears, Times Live  South Africa, ANNA MAJAVU | 24 November, 2011  Concern is mounting about the government’s planned R1-trillion nuclear power station tender, with opposition parties demanding reassurances from Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe that the tender will not be “mired in corruption” like the R70-billion arms deal.

It will be the biggest tender ever issued in South Africa . “The multibillion-rand arms deal, which was just a fraction of this cost, was mired in corruption,” said DA parliamentary leader Lindiwe Mazibuko. “There are reports that the government is being strongly lobbied about this tender by companies such as Areva and Westinghouse who are desperate to get in on the action.”….

African Christian Democratic Party MP Cheryllyn Dudley asked if the government had budgeted money for handling nuclear waste, which remains hazardous for more than 200000 years…. The cabinet approved a 20-year energy plan for South Africa in March. It stipulates that 23% of the energy supply be derived from nuclear power.

Parliament’s portfolio committee on energy visited France last year and met representatives of nuclear energy corporation Areva. They told the MPs that their company was ready to build six nuclear power plants in South Africa. http://www.timeslive.co.za/politics/2011/11/24/r1tn-nuclear-tender-raises-graft-fears

Iran’s nukes – a matter of national pride

Iran’s stance on nuclear technology tied to national pride USA Today, 15 Nov 11, TEHRAN, Iran (AP) – Banners proclaiming Iran’s “obvious right” to nuclear technology are draped over building facades. State media describe the head of the U.N. atomic watchdog agency as an American puppet and dismiss claims about nuclear weapons advances as made-in-USA falsehoods.

At Tehran University, a group of hard-line students starts a petition urging Iran to withdraw from an international treaty regulating nuclear development. There’s no doubt Iran carefully stage manages much of its backlash to Western pressures over its nuclear efforts. But not all.

Iran’s defiance remains one of the few patches of common ground in a nation with multiple divisions: Hard-liners against opposition groups; power struggles between the ruling clerics and President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad; infighting among various parliament factions.

“Iranians don’t agree on much these days, but you could say the nuclear issue is one where they more or less speak in a common voice,” said William O. Beeman, aUniversity of Minnesota professor who follows Iranian affairs. Continue reading →

The battle to save the Grand Canyon from uranium mining

Grand Canyon uranium mining battle heats up , The Daily Miner, 11/8/2011 WASHINGTON – A bill that would open 1 million acres near Grand Canyon National Park to new uranium mining was hailed Thursday as an economic boon and derided as a threat to the park’s wilderness and tourism value.

More than a dozen people – including scientists, federal agency heads, Arizona congressmen, businessmen and northern Arizona locals – gave differing opinions at a House subcommittee hearing on the Northern Arizona Mining Continuity Act.

The bill would block the Department of the Interior from imposing a 20-year ban on new mines in the so-called Arizona Strip – a ban the department formally recommended last week……

Rep. Raul Grijalva, D-Tucson, said the area must be approached with exceptional caution because, “It’s the Grand Canyon, stupid.” He introduced a bill earlier this year that would do the opposite of Franks’, by permanently blocking new uranium mines in the area. Continue reading →
