2010 year of big potential for renewable energy

other countries have amazing potential as well. One report demonstrated how Australia could be completely powered by renewables — yes, 100 percent — by 2020…….It remains to be seen if 2011 will feature significant progress toward renewable energy goals, or just another year’s worth of reporting on its potential.

2010 Renewable Energy Recap: Big Potential, Slow Progress,  IEEE Spectrum, 31 Dec 10, This year started with good news on the renewable energy front, with reports on impressive 2009 growth in wind power installations. 2010, though, wasn’t quite as great a year in terms of the number of turbines and solar panels installed in the US and around the world. Instead, it was the year of potential: report after report showing just how much power the world really could get if all our renewable energy dreams are realized. Continue reading

Electricity utilities need to understand Smart Grids and Renewable Energy

the technology enables utilities to integrate renewable energies, such as wind, water and solar, into the grid…… Smart grids enable the power gathered from the solar source to be retained in energy storage systems which can then feed into the grid during periods of peak demand, or when other renewable energy sources are low….the vast majority of utilities do not realise the full capabilities it delivers……

The Last Word: Developing the Smart Grid | Renewable Energy World, Bastian Fischer, December 29, 2010 “……….There is undoubtedly increasing pressure on organisations and countries to become greener. One of the biggest contributors to CO² emissions is the electric utility industry, accounting for a quarter of all carbon dioxide emissions worldwide, the largest share amongst all industries. Off-grid small scale solar energy in huts in Africa

There is no reliable data on the spread of off-grid renewable energy on a small scale, in part because the projects are often installed by individuals or tiny nongovernmental organizations…Part of the problem is that the new systems buck the traditional mold, in which power is generated by a very small number of huge government-owned companies that gradually extend the grid into rural areas. Investors are reluctant to pour money into products that serve a dispersed market of poor rural consumers

Beyond Fossil Fuels African Huts Far From the Grid Glow With Renewable Power NYTimes.com, by Elisabeth Rosenthal 27 Dec 10, “………As small-scale renewable energy becomes cheaper, more reliable and more efficient, it is providing the first drops of modern power to people who live far from slow-growing electricity grids and fuel pipelines in developing countries. Although dwarfed by the big renewable energy projects that many industrialized countries are embracing to rein in greenhouse gas emissions, these tiny systems are playing an epic, transformative role.
