Campaigners slam plans for toxic chemical plant near a primary school – https://morningstaronline.co.uk/article/campaigners-slam-plans-toxic-chemical-plant-near-primary-school-despite-earlier
“ENVIRONMENTAL campaigners have slammed a council for backing plans for a toxic chemical plant near a primary school, despite an earlier warning that proposed new homes near a similar site could put residents’ safety at risk.
Cavendish Nuclear and Amentum (CNA) wants to build the facility at Port of Workington, Cumbria, to support the decommissioning of the Monju Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor, in Japan.
If the plans are approved, the company want to process radioactive sodium coolant from the plant, which would be located near Northside Primary School, into caustic soda.” Full article can be seen here: Morning Star 10th October 2026″

“Cumberland Council, which owns the port, said it would use £4.5m of Town Deal funding to prepare land at the port and neighbouring Oldside for wider development.
The plan involves bringing the coolant to Workington where it would be converted into sodium hydroxide, also known as caustic soda, which is used in cleaning products and manufacturing.” Full article can be read here:BBC News Cumbria 4th November 2026″
Dispute over Japan to Workington nuclear waste facility – News & Star
Radiation Free Lakeland “RFL believes Cumberland Council, as the port’s owner, should “put their constituents and neighbouring areas before the interests of the nuclear industry,” halting the plans “to bring volatile liquid sodium coolant” to Workington “from the failed Japanese Monju reactor. Campaigners raised concerns about the council’s celebration of the facility as an economic development opportunity for Workington given that it is also the landlord at the Port of Workington and the organisation responsible for deciding on its planning permission.” Full article at News and Star 5th November 2026 (paywall)
